I think it would be more realistic if the more the durability goes down on items, the more "cracked" the item appears on our player model/enemy player models (the zombies and creatures that come with armor). For instance, if we have a diamond sword that has the durability meter on red, the sword would look really cracked and look like it would break with a few more uses (which it would). And we know that when zombies/other mobs drop armor and tools, their durability is so low. It would be more cool and realistic if the zombies armor (if it had any on) would appear cracked and worn.
This cracked armor/ tools feature would especially be beneficial in PVP maps (such as the Survival Games or The Wall, or whatever you call that map) because you can see how broken your opponents armor and weapons are so you know if it's safe to approach them (and murder them in cold blood, muahah! Ahem). However, this feature wouldn't look so great on leather armor/wooden tools since those types of material can't really be "cracked" per say. Anyway. That's my suggestion.
This isn't a bad idea. I just don't see the point. It's only benefit comes multiplayer, and only the PvP aspect of multiplayer. To those of us, like myself who don't partake in PvP it is little more than a neat graphical addition. But lets be honest, how many times do you actually look at yourself in single player? Like I said, the concept isn't bad, but I'm steadfastly opposed to any and all additions to the game that are merely for the benefit of one style of play or another.

Don't post it in minecraftforums (loljk) You should tell Jeb to make the realism thing a reality faster! I TOTALLY support this but this would be a VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY (x 12312312382964234758683468r029756829302897) hard to code.

I think all it would need is to use the graphic for when a block is being broken, and if the durability is less than a certain number, update the graphic! See? Isn't that hard... But I do not know if they need separate items for each broken tool (like how the anvil is when it gets cracked)

Well when you're in first person, you would still see your current tool being cracked, y'know? I understand your point of view on it and I agree slightly, but I just think it's a nice addition.

I play SSP and look at myself surprisingly often.... almost too often now arrows stay stuck in the player model. But this idea still has the benefit of letting the player see zombies and skeletons armour durability. Which is a benefit for those that play SSP and aren't as obsessed with their character skin as I am.

I see what you're saying. I honestly hadn't thought about that. And if it were to work that way it would be nice. But don't most zombies and skeletons die before their armor breaks?

But like I said in the OP, the armor that drops from zombies and skeletons are very low on durability, so it would probably crack (while still protecting the zombies/skele's) before they die. Also. What if creepers had armor...? Now that I could not imagine *shudders*... I think all they could wear would be the helmet.

Creepers with armor is the most terrifying thing I think I have ever read. But I do see your point about the mob armor already being cracked when it drops. Though I've actually yet to get a mob to drop of the rare drops myself.

I think the best part of this is that we already (Kinda) have textures for this. The textures that appear when breaking blocks? We can use that. But it may need to be in the items file to work.

Yeah, I kinda said that before about the texture, but you are indeed correct.
I do not agree. The reason something like the anvil has cracks is because there is no durability bar. But tools have this bar, you don't need cracks. Frankly I prefer the bar anyway, it's much easier to tell how many more uses you have than any amount of cracks or tears in the armor.
So it serves zero functionality use and very little, likely unnoticeable aesthetic use. It just wouldn't be worth it, in my opinion.

I didn't even think about leather being torn! Good call!
Thanks for the support! And I didn't think about the chunks in the wood! My mind is mush today, so yeah, lol.
I like that! Good call!

Haha... I love when that happens... Arrows get stuck in all the wrong places...

Really? Because I always get a plethora of bows and spades and whatnot as drops...
