Have you ever made a cactus farm? Let's be honest here; how many times have you actually harvested that thing? I mean how many uses do cactus have? It's a block that causes damage, but crafting-wise, what other use for cactus is there despite green dye? Ah, good. You think it needs another use? Great! So do I! Introducing cactus fruit! After a cactus grows 3 blocks tall, a cactus is ready to sprout a flower. After a growing process with a duration similar to that of wheat, a fruit will sprout out of the flower. That fruit can be harvested to drop one "cactus fruit". The fruit restores 2 1/2 hunger points each. The fruit gives very low saturation. If you do not use shears to break the fruit off of the cactus, you will take half a heart of damage from the cactus. Feedback and support is appreciated. If you think the idea is good and should be implemented in the game, please press the green little "+" in the lower right hand corner. It helps more than you think! And of course, don't forget to vote. Thanks for reading!

Restore hearts? If anything, food should restore hunger
Anyways, this would provide a new challenge for redstoners finding a way on farming these.
Question: Can you use bonemeal? Where on the cactus does the flower(s) grow? Any other use on the fruit other than eating?
Hmmm... You got a point there. Cactus grow slowly and have no other uses than green dye and causing damage to mobs. I won't mind this being implemented into the game though. Half-support. =)
I support but the fruit would restore hunger not hearts. I think that it should restore 2 hunger like a carrot.
Sorry about that, that's what I meant initially. Thanks for all the support, everybody! Fixed. Perhaps when you harvest a fruit it does half a heart of damage?

Q1: No, you can't use bonemeal. You'd have to wait for it to grow. Q2: The flower would grow on the side of the top cactus block. Q3: No use other than eating, but suggestions are welcome. - Please excuse my double post, some parts of my computer aren't currently working correctly, which in this situation is causing me to have to make two posts.
Good idea, if Jeb makes it so that passive mobs don't spawn in deserts except for rare occasions, this cactus idea could work. I also think it could be used for potions, because hey. Cactus deserves an alchemical purpose.
Yes, please, because my cactus farm is really not what I thought it would be.
By the way, I think once a cactus is three blocks tall, you should be able to use bone meal on the top block to make it grow a fruit. You can't use it more than once, though, otherwise people could get four different cactus fruit. And is the fruit part of the cactus block, or the block next to the cactus?
I think it should restore hunger instead, and with a very low saturation so that finding food is still a challenge.
And it should also have a random chance of giving you Hunger, and a very rare chance of giving you short Nausea.

It does restore hunger, I thought I fixed that, and on a realistic note, why would eating a cactus fruit make one nauseous? I do like the low saturation bit, though, I'll put that in the thread.

Just a simple piston to push off the flower would work, the problem is keeping it from getting destroyed by other cacti.
Other than that, don't really mind if something like this was implemented.
Could the flower be placed?
Also, to those of you so worried about the cacti destroying the fruit: Just break the darn thing and build it back once you get the fruit.
