I think you should be able to hire villagers. You would give them emeralds and they would work for you. there would be archers, miners, butchers, fishermen, farmers, lumberjacks, and warriors.
Butcher
Lumberjack
Miner
Warrior
Archer
Farmer
Fisherman
Villagers that you hired would spend the day doing their job, and then come back to their village at the end of the day and put the items the got in a chest for you to take.
If there is no water source under 50 blocks away from the village, the fisherman won't do anything unless the player creates a water source which must be at least 5 blocks wide, 5 blocks long, and 3 blocks deep.
Miners need to be given torches. In this way, mobs wont spawn in the tunnels they mine.
(Thanks to souljabri557):The more emeralds you put, the more effectively villagers do their job. For example, a miner with one emerald would mine only on the surface, as in basins. A miner with ten emeralds would make advanced diamond-level branch mines and whatnot.
If one of your hired villagers dies, the only way to get it back is by hiring another one, so you should be careful with them.
Also! If we ever want this to reach the eyes of Notch, Jeb, and Dinnerbone we are going to have to make this thread well known. If you are reading this and like the idea of it, post something! Even if it is as simple as:
"I think this would be a great addition to the game. Please add this Notch/Jeb/Dinnerbone!"
Try to keep the thread alive!

really useful and awesome i support at all i support to the death
two bodyguards front of my home its a thing like dream
i hope notch will see it and add it to next patch ths idea is awesomeeeeeeeeee
but mercenaries will not be only against zombies
we should be able to change their behavior (like defansive, aggresive, kill players when seen, never kill players)
First off I SUPPORT the idea, I dont know that the idea has been elaborated on enough for integration tho.
Anyways, Jonahhex the behavior option would be nice
I think Health Regen is a little much, I do think you should be able to heal them, provide them with food, and provide them with armor.
What if you need them for longer tho, maybe you could specify how long up front and in wich case you would need to provide housing if they were far away.
What do you intend for them to do? to follow you? or to go to a designated work area?
Say you have a miner, hopefully you would need them to go to a designated area, this is a dangerous journey. What if the life is lost?
Do the other villigers respond?
Or say you hire a butcher, does he go to your farm or wander aimlessly searching for meat? do you pay him by the pound.
I am only trying to play devils advocate here tho. Because I LOVE this idea.

Should I add that you can set the warroir or archer to follow you, guard the village or gaurd your house?
I support this, though I feel a few tweaks are in order.
- Farmers and Lumberjacks are good.
- Add butchers to slay animals and cook them
- Blacksmiths would be hired to control iron golems
I feel that testificate warriors don't fit, thats why they have the robots roamin' aboot.
This needs work. You never even discussed how strong they are or how you'd control where, what and how they'd dig. There's nothing here I haven't seen before and still there's no thought into how it would actually work.

Yes it does. Thats what i was getting at. Its great as a concept but the actual workings of this are very non specific. Maybe we can work it out.

I think you should have 3 classes for hire:
Movement: I only see two options here for thier movement. Either you hire them to search localy or there would be an item you would recieve upon hireing that could be placed to assign the workers post (such as your personal feilds or pastures)
Agricultual:Hoe or Axe- This class seeks out to gather wheat, carrots, potatoes, etc. or pork, chicken and other meats.
Mercenary:Bow or Sword/ Armor optional - This class is Offense or Defense driven. Offense is free roam destroying to within inch of their life to gather mobs items.
Movement: Offense mode would be free roam. Defense would be set as posts or "follow"
Resources: Pickaxe or Axe - Resources class would set out to gather accordingly, Pickaxe to the mines, Axe to the woodsMovement: hire them to search locally or there would be an item you would receive (a post) upon hiring that could be placed to assign the workers post. These would only start at these posts and have complete freedom in how they mine as long as they begin near the post.
Hiring: If hiring villager to free roam, duration would be one day upon the end of that time they would return to their village and place items in nearest chest to village. If hired to a post they would need a roof over head for the night and would work for as many days as following the daily requirements of: dwelling place, payment (gold ingot, emerald), placed post sign. If any of those is missing the Hand is dismissed. Items go to nearest chest.
The concept of hiring villagers is cool but I believe there should be some other form of utility mob that you can just give items to in order to activate mining mode, versus lumberjack mode, warrior mode, archer mode, and so on. Also the payment should be gold ingots or bars. I'm thinking living pigman.
I'm going to have to say....Meh. This seems a bit TOO realistic. If you think about it, fisherman, butchers, and other "gathering" villagers already exist. Just buy their stuff.
As for combat villagers, it WOULD be interesting to see villagers to defend against zombies. Perhaps a villager can buy a sword from you and equip it, kind of like a zombie can with dropped items. I think that the idea of "Hiring" is very very overpowered. How much AI would that need? Plus, if you left, shut down, bluescreened, lagged out, etc, how would they remember? If you want a helper to kill things, get a dog. Or a friend.
You wouldn't have to hire villagers. You would only do it if you wantedIf this were to be a mod, someone else would have to make it cause I don't know how to.

I agree they should have diffrent modes you can set them on like passive, hold position, move around, but not far away, aggresive, like companions, or defend villagers, but should cost 5 emralds and you should be able to have them have armor (leather, iron, gold, dimond, chain,)and weapons the same.AND be able to make villeger kings, but only one, and if they add in castles it would be cool if there was a village inside the castle with a king and archers, knights, and strong paladins that protect and follows the king.( i know i said and alot)

Bodyguard
Hunter
Farmer
Fisherman
Lumberjack
Miner
new suguestions: if a villager dies on the job, then the other villages will wait 5 minecraft days to be hired again for the same job
i think it should be a permeate hiring till you relieve the villager of his duty.
- Farmers and Lumberjacks are good.
