Just to add my opinion, dying metal really is not that big of a deal. I mean, come on! Who haven't seen painted metal in their lives? Think about it and you realize colored alloys are everywhere!
BTW, this idea is turning into a wonderful suggestion for SMP, and I just adore the idea of a special kill message when you put your sword to use:
[player name] put an end to [victim name] using his trusty [sword name].
And to make it worthwhile adding 2 additional materials to your sword an extra 10% enchantment points and 10% durability for naming it as well seems completely reasonable.
I FULLY support this suggestion as it really would improve the over-all game experience.
And with that I wish your suggestion luck in reaching the higher-ups and eventually also the game itself!
But the trolls, though...
"Troll put an end to Player with his trusty Boner". That's why we wouldn't have custom kill messages.

Thanks for support! I agree, all the perks for such a special sword are sweet. And you'll always be proud, because it takes a long time to make a nice one!
But the trolls, though...
"Troll put an end to Player with his trusty Boner". That's why we wouldn't have custom kill messages.
As said up above, the kill messages could be cool, but also have a down side. Nice troll though. XD
Although, once again, it depends upon who you play with... It could be a nice addition. I'll set up a poll for it, and see what everyone thinks!
... what?
Can you explain this a bit better?
I think i know what you're getting at.. assuming 'Buttscratcher' is the name of a sword..(horrible, horrible name for a sword btw)
And in this scenario you are killing Notch? (impossible btw)
Ok let me restate:
Those speech things servers say when someone gets killed? (Player X blew up, Player Y was slain by Player X, Player Y tried to swim in Lava, etc)
Im thinking New ones for the advanced Swords: EG
thisguy1045 was slain by the [insert cool sword name here], W00DRUFF's blade
I like this idea, but what you make the inset metal should provide a minor buff and debuff (that cancel each other out).
So like, a diamond inset would make the sword better than a bone inset? I get what you're saying, but in the long, run, i feel that the idea has to be simple to get added to the game. That would be something to suggest after these are implemented, and it can't be too complex for all those new players.
Cool idea though!

No, the each inset would provide a very small buff (like maybe +1 damage to undead mobs with a bone inset, or +5% durability with an iron inset) and another minor debuff to cancel the buff out (like maybe -1 damage to endermen with a bone inset, or 10% longer damage immunity with an iron inset).

Okay, I see, it would be pretty cool to have that added to each inset. However, to me it still seems a bit complex. I like the main idea, but I wouldn't know how to accurately develop all of these buffs/debuffs. If you would like to take a swing at it, feel free.
Here is the list of all the insets: Bone, Diamond, Lapis block, Ender Pearl, Emerald, Redstone dust, Blaze Rod, Glowstone dust, Obsidian, Gold, Iron
Post here and show what you think should be for which inset.
I like the idea on being able to name your sword, but not to dye.
It would not make sense to 'dye' metal.
If they did add dying to a diamond sword, You can dye it brown to make it look like wood
Then Trick players into a unfair 1v1 Who want to use a wood sword, etc
But your using a hidden diamond sword.
I don't like that idea of dyeing the metal i think they should make a emerled sword that is stronger than gold but less than diamond so it can be in servers
how about you could only dye the handle of the sword?
Oh yah i like this ideaI dont know about the new Player 1 got '' shredded'' by Player 2 but i like the idea of legendary swords it could be like this Player 1 got slain By Player 2s Legendary sword
Bone: +1 damage to undead mobs, -1 damage to endermen Diamond: +1 damage to armor, -1 damage to silverfish Lapis block: -1 damage taken from mining, -1 damage to iron and diamond armor Ender Pearl: +2 damage to endermen, -5 damage to squid Emerald: +1 damage to iron golems, villagers, and zombie villagers, -1 damage to the enderdragon Redstone dust: -0.1 second damage immunity, -1 damage Blaze Rod: +1 damage to undead mobs, spiders, and endermen, -1 damage to nether mobs Glowstone dust: +2 fire damage, -1 damage (deals 1 more damage to mobs that take damage from fire, -1 damage to mobs that don't) Obsidian: +10% durability, -1 damage Gold: +50% enchantability, -1% durability Iron: +5% durability, +10% damage immunity.
If you think that I messed up on balancing the buffs and debuffs, feel free to adjust the numbers.

Wow. Nice and fast work. I like it! I'll add it to the OP in a spoiler, give you some credit, and say it could be an option.
Beautiful idea! Full support! I actually made a graph a while back of each enchantment combination and gave them all names. It would be nice to see the swords officially called said name.
Here's some more ideas for swords found in chests (From my graph of names):
Grave Robber (Red and Black): Looting I-III, Smite I-IV
Defiance (Black and any): Sharpness I-IV, Fire Aspect I-II
Arachnophobia (Any and red): Bane of Arthropods I-IV, Knockback I-II
BioHazard (Any and any): Smite III-IV, Fire Aspect 0-II
Excaliber (Blue and gold): Sharpness II-IV
Those are just some of the ones on my list. I wasn't thinking about colors when I made the names, so perhaps you guys can come up with some.
Awaken my child, and embrace the glory that is your birthright; know that I am the Overmind, the eternal will of the swarm, and that you were created to serve me.

I've been thinking of one very like your "Arachnophobia" sword but with one difference; I had given it the name "Arachnid's Phobia".
I made a simple sprite of the Dungeonmaster and made an image of the 'To Forge A Sword' achievement with it via a website. Hope you like it!
Very cool! Thanks so much for this! I might add it as a banner choice, but I think I'll change the hilt because it is hard to see with this color scheme. Thanks!

The Witherblade
Enchantment - Wither Effect
Insert Gem - Obsidian
Handle dye - White (bonemeal)
Two cents given
You're right, I think i'll add that to the OP... great for adventure maps!

I don't think the Wither Effect is an enchantment yet. Correct me if I'm wrong!
