Color and title will stay the same as soon as you set them. No taking the sword apart or re-dying..
Depending on the type of server you play, normally you wouldn't even keep some one else's custom sword.. Or, since its so special to them, they would stop at nothing to get it back.
Why wouldn't I keep someone's enchanted diamond sword?
I think this is a neat idea. It'd be cool if you could add an item to act as a decorative sword holder to preserve swords that are getting ready to break or just to add a bit of flair to your home.

Yeah, I think the 1.4 update has an item holder frame that you can place any object into, and it'll be displayed.
Fun stuff!
Sounds quite cool. Now, enchantments should be less random, because the extrem randomness of enchanting makes it impossible to have viable weapons.
I think the randomness adds to this idea! It makes it harder to get the perfect sword.. but when you finally do.. it's like worlds collide and the fabric of the universe comes tumbling down! (Some imagery, eh?)
No, but really... It adds to the challenge of getting a great sword. Remember, dyed/gem'd diamond swords still have a higher enchants than a normal diamond sword.

I like the idea, although I would like to make a suggestion. To me, all that work in making the "perfect" named sword would be fun, but then it would be depressing if after a mere 1500-ish uses the sword was broken forever. What I would like to see is after an "advanced sword" is broken you get two items in your inventory called "Hilt of <swordname>" and "Essence of <swordname>." The hilt, when combined with two diamonds in the usual shape of crafting a sword with the hilt replacing the stick, would create another item called something like "Unenchanted <swordname>" or something along those lines; I'm not good with names. This item could then be placed with the Essence of <swordname> into a new slot (or two new slots) on the enchanting table, and for only ten levels instead of thirty it could be "reimbued" with its "essence" and would be "remade" into the same sword. Thus, after you get your perfect sword, you can keep it, although it wouldn't be too overpowered.
Also, for one of the "Legendary" swords found in caves, I would like to propose the name "Harbinger of Wealth," a Looting I-III(on VERY rare occasions) sword. It could be dyed orange with a diamond inset gem. Also, I feel that these named swords in caves should be able to be "up-enchanted" for a cheaper cost than enchanting a fresh sword. It would be kind of lame to me to find a sword named "The Undead Destroyer" with only a Smite II and no way to further enchant it. Again, this would only apply to those named swords found in caves.

I like your idea... very cool! I think the solution to this though, is the frame block I posted about earlier.
I agree that it would be cool to re-make and have the sword you made, but adding all these blocks such as 'essence' and 'hilt' as well as the process to remake with xp would increase the over all item count to at least 30 or more and confuse players. The process of making a custom sword is already complex as it is.. adding a bunch of new items and ideas just for this would not seem practical, I think, to Mojang.
Remember the forged sword gets a durability boost, so it would be come something like 2000 uses, which is a substantial amount. After you're finished.. and just before your forged sword breaks, you simply place it in a chest or a frame display block for decor.
Thanks for the idea submission, and the term Legendary Sword! Ill add that to the list!
Once again, however, adding a boost to the enchantment just because it is found in a dungeon is too complex. You already get higher enchants simply because it is a dyed/gem'd sword!
Thanks for your input! If you think of anything else, post!

I'll be honest, its been a while since I've seen a simple suggestion that would greatly improve an aspect of minecraft while being so simple, this is probably as good as colored glass but not a lot of people will like it like colored glass because it wouldn't be AS versatile. this would be an awesome yet small addition to minecraft

after reading a bit more i think remaking ones sword wouldn't be to bad, but just keep the enchantment stored inside the crystal of the hilt. i would love dis' feature added to this

New premade sword idea
Sheep's Bane (Because I hate sheep)
White Handle and everything else
No Enchant (so people will rage like I do when a sheep looks at me all derpily)
Good idea, but seriously change "The Undead Destroyer." That has to be the most uncreative and eye-strangling name I've ever seen. No offense.
Those are just ideas submitted... Nothing I have said SHOULD BE the Legendary Swords...
Although the sheep one seemed to be a joke, so I didn't add it.

You know those game 'talks) when it says Player X was slain by Player Y? How about more detailed ones like the detailed swords?
EG
Notch tasted Buttscratcher (W00DRUFF)
Please expand
... what?
Can you explain this a bit better?
I think i know what you're getting at.. assuming 'Buttscratcher' is the name of a sword..(horrible, horrible name for a sword btw)
And in this scenario you are killing Notch? (impossible btw)

Just to add my opinion, dying metal really is not that big of a deal. I mean, come on! Who haven't seen painted metal in their lives? Think about it and you realize colored alloys are everywhere!
BTW, this idea is turning into a wonderful suggestion for SMP, and I just adore the idea of a special kill message when you put your sword to use:
[player name] put an end to [victim name] using his trusty [sword name].
And to make it worthwhile adding 2 additional materials to your sword an extra 10% enchantment points and 10% durability for naming it as well seems completely reasonable.
I FULLY support this suggestion as it really would improve the over-all game experience.
And with that I wish your suggestion luck in reaching the higher-ups and eventually also the game itself!
Why wouldn't I keep someone's enchanted diamond sword?
You would if you wanted to!

Name - Suns Fury
Enchantments - Fire aspect I - II, Smite I - II
Colours - Glowstone dust gem, Orange dye\
I support.
Edit: I claim this page as the Suns Fury page.
But I've yet to meet someone who can outlast fire.
I'll add that to the Legendary Sword submissions!
Thanks for support!
Oh, and you don't get to claim a whole page.
