The point of keeping magic and industry on different paths is to keep them balanced. You are both thinking of industry and magic in minecraft completely literally. I'm saying add industry on top of minecrafts laws right now, of course the industry will have magic because it's not completely realistic. When I say magic I mean the magic that you build up to like enchanting and xp; magic like redstone not connecting to the source but being powered anyway is in the original laws of minecraft; sure you are using magic to create industrial things but all I'm saying is to add more industrial things (or by your logic industrial/magical things).
So you mean xp based technology vs redstone based technology?

Did you forget to read this? It clearly explains why magic and industry have to be on different paths. If I could max enchant a chainsaw then that would be the only tool of that type I would want to use for the rest of the game. You need to keep trying new combinations of tools otherwise the game wouldn't be nearly as fun.
Keeping magic and science different paths keeps you trying new combinations, it makes it so there are more outcomes than one. If I could max enchant the best industrial item then that would be all I wanted for the rest of my game because nothing could possibly be better. An unenchanted magical item is technically an industrial item, but certain items would be better for enchanting than others. If I make a pick that has tons of potential for enchantment and magic then I call it a magical item even when the magic's not in it yet. When you make something like an electric drill then you call it an industrial item originally because it doesn't have as much potential for enchantment.
I'm sorry, still doesn't make sense, regardless of if it's literal or not. What I'm saying is; you're rigidly separating two different things that are in fact different aspects of the same thing. As for your comment about chainsaws, ever heard of a diamond sword?

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
I now understand what everyone is saying about how it would be better if they were mixed, but I think I would personally enjoy it more if they were on different paths. Thanks for all the info and suggestions.
A diamond sword is extremely unrealistic. The smelting temperature for diamond is 6422 degrees Fahrenheit.
Back on topic, If industry was added into minecraft, It would start out as something like better than wolves and then develop into something like buildcraft.

Your point being? It's a meta-game weapon thats in the game, so Toastytoes' point about chainsaws being the only weapon he'd ever use is invalid.

Tell me how a chainsaw is worse than a diamond sword.
I'm sorry, what? That has nothing to do with what i said. Toastytoes' said that a hypothetical chainsaw would be unenchantable so it isn't a meta-game weapon because according to him Minecraft shouldn't have a meta-game weapon. Well, the diamond sword is an enchantable meta-game weapon, so that logic is invalid.

The reason I said a chainsaw would be the only weapon people would use would be because an extremely industrially produced weapon (like a chainsaw) is better than a diamond sword while neither of them are enchanted. If you could enchant the chainsaw as well as you could the diamond sword, then the diamond sword would be obsolete. A diamond sword requires no industrial hardware so without enchantments it would be much worse than industrially created weapons, but you could enchant it better than industrial hardware to keep things balanced. If you made an industrial weapon like a lazer sword and got a mega-enchantment for it then it would be the only weapon you used for the rest of your game. If you made a sword with a blaze rod handle (whatever you think should make it better for enchanting) wouldn't be nearly as good as industrial weapons before you enchanted it, but after it would be just about the same power. But, industrial and magical weapons would be good for different things and have different effects so you wouldn't be able to get some ultimate weapon that is the only one you use.
A diamond sword is a meta-game weapon, but that doesn't mean I agree that it should be. This would change when industrial things were added because clearly you would be able to create better weapons than the diamond sword. And like I said before, there wouldn't be a meta-game weapon because there would be upsides and downsides to magical weapons and industrial weapons.
I have a solution to the rigidness of the industrial vs magic problem. You know how in medieval (and/or other) times it was believed that iron beats magic, and how people hanged horseshoes on their doors to ward off elves, fairys and what not. Well if apply this rule to minecraft, you could merge magic and industrial tech together up to the point of when iron is involved. So that nothing is ruined, you make steel out of iron, and that will be used for industrial things, or just give iron a horrible enchantability and give gold enough enchantability to make up for it. With this you would chose between a chainsaw that has set and stable ability, or a diamond sword that if chanted can have more power but at a higher risk. As well as game mechanics like certain mobs will avoid a certain area around a block of iron or some bars while others will ignore it completely and come right toward you.
The major point of a sandbox game like minecraft is to give you many options and set you loose. This suggestion would either make it so you'd be limiting yourself in your options by choosing one or the other, or forcing them to make duplicate of everything in both paths. My conclusion: Bad suggestion. If you want industrial minecraft, it'd probably be better as a mod.
Joel minecraft isn't set in a time period however there are already mods so mojang shouldn't add too much industrial stuff imo though redstone seems fine. I don't want vanilla to end up like tekkit or FTB

Why is that?
Somewhat, not exactly redstone vs. xp but industrial vs. magical. Xp and redstone are just aspects of either side.
