Just a quick idea I had. If you've got some Glowstone next to some kind of opaque block, like say you've got it in a ceiling, make it cast more light. So, if it's only shining light downwards because 5 of its six sides are blocked, make it fully light (light level 15) the three blocks next to it before the light starts getting weaker from distance.
Many people complain that lighting doesn't extend far enough, but truthfully it goes pretty far, people just don't want to place any extra lighting than they have to, so when their place is a bit darkened they whine about lighting not being enough.

No, I'm calling people whiners because they think multiple light sources look bad.
This person was whining because he didn't want to place redstone lamps anywhere at all. One person from a very old thread was complaining because he tried to light a 50 block radius with a couple torches on the edges.

People love to whine about what they could just as easily fix themselves. Sadly common in this community...
Anyway, this sounds like it could be a pain to code. It's an interesting idea but it really isn't so hard to just add more light.
