Ok, so recently I have seen a lot of these types of things in the suggestions forum:
Villagers should be human
Villagers should be smart
Villagers should be pigmen
Villagers should be able to hold swords
Villagers should talk
Villagers should build and gather resources on their own
Villagers should have genders
etc...
I am going to ask you to PLEASE read this before making any villager-related suggestion.
Concerning human villagers: I don't think villagers should be human and I don't think Jeb will ever make them human. Why?
Point 1: Because these non-human villagers are what makes Minecraft unique - and uniqueness is what makes Minecraft stand out from other games. Honestly - have you ever seen a "testificate" in another game? Any game? No. Making villagers human would make them seem just like villagers from any other old game - which would take away an aspect of uniqueness in Minecraft.
Point 2: SINGLEplayer. Human villagers would resemble other players - making you not the only "intellegent being" in singleplayer worlds.
Point 3: Reproduction >.> The current way villagers have kids would look... oh, weird (just like the word weird - i before e except after c?) if they were human. Mojang would have to overhaul the current simplistic "mating" to something M rated.
Point 4: Multiplayer/mods. If you REALLY want human villagers, play multiplayer or use mods. Please don't take away from the originality of minecraft.
Concerning "smart" villagers: Villagers' intelligence is represented by their appearance. Their cross-eyed look, folded arms, and dumb behavior all seem to imply a not very smart race of creatures - meaning that if they were made smarter, this new feature would contradict their appearance. (this is why I'm hoping that the trading system will be made less static - it doesn't match them.)
Concerning pigmen villagers:
Guess what. Pigmen villagers are ALREADY in the game. Shock and awe. They're called zombie pigmen.
"But that doesn't use the ORIGINAL pigman skin!"
You're right. Mojang decided to change it to add more content to the nether. Mojang has made it pretty clear that non-zombie pigmen won't be implemented. If they do implement them, then you have my full permission to come over to my house and punch me in the face.
Concerning armed villagers/villagers defending themselves/warrior villager:
Let me make something clear: Villagers are villagers. Not epic fighters. They are helpless creatures unable to manage themselves, with a very low intelligence. They have their arms folded because they can't do anything. Letting them defend themselves would take the "helpless villager that needs to be protected" image away, and replaces it with a "warrior that can manage itself just fine without you" image - which makes the player not feel needed. Once the player is not needed, villages become a nuisance, or just a way to farm iron.
Also, iron golems. This is the villager defense. The village does not need another defense besides you and a golem - even just you. Before you go and complain "i0rn golmmzzz r 2 slw!!!11! vllgr warror iz xtr fst!!!", iron golems can 2 or 1 hit KO most monsters and is near invincible.
Also, YOU. If you want the villagers to not die so bad, then protect them yourself. I fought off a large zombie siege attack with a stone sword and a leather tunic - and I barely took damage. On hard mode.
Concerning talking villagers: Sort of a branch off of "smart villagers", let me make one thing clear: villagers are (obviously) not humans. Which means they probably can't speak any intelligible language. And even if they could, which language would it be? Now, I wouldn't have a problem with this if they spoke a very basic language with primitive vocabulary, to reflect their not being very intelligent. So, I don't have too much of a problem with this - as long as it reflected their personality.
Concerning villagers expanding/building/etc: Now, I actually wouldn't have too much of a problem with villagers harvesting their own resources - it would, after all, make sense. But building on their own is a different thing. While you may wonder, "Why are the houses there in the first place?", that is part of the mystery of minecraft. I personally would find it annoying, repeat, ANNOYING, if they went around building houses willy nilly. I like to expand their village when I want, how I want. Also: Refer to their helpless personality. How could they build structures like that if they can't even talk?
If I wanted villages that expanded on their own, I would download the millenaire mod.
I already elaborated a bit on the gender issue, so I won't go into further idea.
Forum Mods: I know this is not a suggestion for Minecraft itself, however, it is advising people to not clutter the forum with things that probably won't be implemented. And also hopefully preventing repeat threads. Also, on the event that you might find this useful, do NOT sticky it. I have learned that a good amount of suggestors don't read things that are sticky. Including the rules.
So, there's that. Thank you for listening. Yes, this thread will probably attract flame from the "minecraft should be an rpg" folks out there. But I don't really care.
The only thing I have to disagree on is them fighting. If they were stupid and got hit they would retaliate. I'm not saying that they should completely defend off mobs but if they get hit they should at least hit and run. And all mobs should hurt them not just zombies.
Villagers' intelligence is represented by their appearance. Their cross-eyed look, folded arms, and dumb behavior --
I disagree. Steve is widely considered to be very smart, and the default skin (Steve) has crossed eyes. I do agree about the testificates being dumb, though. I've set up TNT fall traps near the entrances of their houses, and into the void they went.

If anyone wants to port/remake this, feel free to do that! Or don't. It's up to you, really.
I guess them being dumb is just my personal opinion, their intellect could be debated I suppose.
I agree with most of what you said, but I disagree here. If they were dumb they wouldn't be able to build houses or robots or farms or find diamond. HOWEVER, if you look at them you'll se they wear robes, are praying and their largest building is a church often at the highest point in the village. My theory is that they are deeply religious, therefore they just built enough buildings to live properly. They don't talk to avoid saying sinful things, don't build to avoid being too proud, and avoid showing gender as to avoid lust.
I could add more to this, but I wont. Anyway, that's my theory on why they never do anything, but it reaches the same end as your theory.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...

That's also an interesting idea. (would also explain why they don't kill zombies)
I'm kind of indecisive about this, because, while if it was stickied, certainly more people would see it, but then the people who break a lot of rules on this forum - and make threads like this - don't usually even spare a glance at stickied stuff.
I agree with a lot of this, but for some reason I have always pictured them to be intellect-based life forms by their huge heads. Engineering robo-golems FTW! But that's just my imagination. Otherwise I totally agree.

Be caring, please help my dragon hatch by giving him a little click.
About the talking thing, I don't want them to talk to you, but some nonsense words or unitelligble mumbling would be nice for when they are 'socialising' (looking at you or another villager or an animal). Also some damage sounds would be good, maybe just the same ones as the player. They are currently eerily silent.
Also, I would like live pigmen someday.
Otherwise I agree with everything you say
I disagree on the idea that villagers are stupid. They obviously have a large set of skills, but mojang is taking their time fleshing out their villages. So you know, once they get around to allowing them to do class specific actions or something, then we'll see some kind of intelligence from them. Also, trading.
I'm glad you wrote this, and I hope some people will at least think about it when making a new topic. You did say a couple times how the villagers were "primitive", to the point of it being caveman-like, but they are somewhat advanced to be able to have libraries and houses. I still think they shouldn't talk (with the player), but I don't believe it's because they are too dumb to talk :P.
I honestly don't understand why some people think pigmen are the answer to everything, how villagers/Endermen/pigmen/etc. are actually some super intelligent beings, or why villagers should have some complex economy/reputation system :P.

You think people will actually READ this and decide NOT to post a stupid suggestion.
*wipes tear away*
Ahh that is a good one.
That's the thing.
None of the noobs even read the PINNED RULES at the freaking TOP of the page. So this is really kind of pointless.
Which begs me to ask WHY you posted it in the first place lol.

It doesn't hurt to try to be helpful, even if the people you're trying to help won't listen.
That's also an interesting idea. (would also explain why they don't kill zombies)

I am starting to change my opinion on them...
Again, good point with villagers being smart.
