BEFORE YOU START READING: This is not a suggestion for a new dimension, this is not a suggestion for a new game mode, this is a suggestion for a MAP TYPE. Like the Superflat/Normal option for your game, it is a MAP TYPE.
Ever get bored of the old Minecraft cave system, wishing there was more diversity to it? Want to live in a map with less sky and more caves? Want me to shut up and get onto the post? If you said "Yes" to any of those questions, read on.
Caveworld would be a very, very large cave system (Or multiple large cave systems) in which you could survive and thrive. How, you may ask, can you survive in a world where there is no surface, no way to collect wood and make tools? Good question, and I'll tell you. You always spawn in a semi large grassy area called a Nature Cave, there is a randomly picked tree* next to your spawn. Surrounding this area would be pretty much the same thing as one of those rare spectacular caves that you tend to find near your spawn, except it goes on seemingly forever. (Or it can have an end, depending on what you decide)
*excluding jungle trees, as they have only half the chance that a normal tree does to drop saplings.
If you want to be more exact with it, there is now no sky, only a little bit of grass in Caveworld. (I'll get to that in a minute) Like in the Nether, Caveworld would have bedrock on the ceiling as well as the bottom of the map, but seeing as there would be around 140 more block layers to travel through, you probably would never see the top of the map. (Or never need to.)
Brittommy came up with an excellent idea for the chunk loading problem, here it is, but the suggestion thread for it is originally by Redyoshi101, here's a link for it.
I think I have a way of fixing the lag generated by the new anvil systems... Cube chunks?
This might be a little hard to explain, but currently the chunks are based on the x-z axis, however many blocks, and include all the blocks from bedrock to the very tippy top.
For this world type, the chunks could be different, so that they load blocks on an x-y-z axis, so that you don't have all the blocks above you and all the blocks below you.
If they can get this to work, the only issue I can think it would generate is TNT explosions would be a lot laggier, and falling long distance would be laggier as well (as you'd have to load the chunks whilst you fall).
Lava and water should generate much higher up on Caveworld maps, probably spawning up to layer 180 or something, because to be honest, caves get a little boring without the hazard or light of lava. I'm not saying lava should be spawned in every tunnel, I'm saying the lava pools and the big lava caves should spawn more often so as to bring a little ambiance to the caves.
Ores would spawn higher up then normally, and can spawn in larger veins, perhaps depending on the normal size of an ore vein (Let's say Diamond), instead of generating 4 diamonds in the vein, it would generate 6, and so on.Generated structures such as Abandoned Mineshafts and Strongholds would generate higher as well, and since there is more space for them to generate, the structures could be larger and more complex then in default Minecraft.
Speaking of generated things, Ravines would have a major change that includes them being much, much wider, anywhere from 7 blocks of air space in between to 15 blocks. In caveworld, there would also be vertical ravines called Chasms, which spawn around the same size as a ravine, but now it goes much, much higher vertically and less horizontally, kind of like flipping a ravine on it's side, so it is much taller than it is wide.
There could also be cave "Biomes", for example certain sections of cavern made of different material, like an ice cavern that spawns only above a certain altitude; one replier of mine suggested that there could even be a whole cavern that is similar to a nature cave. That would, of course, have to spawn much more rarely than a nature cave itself, since the resource haul from one of those would be much greater than in separate nature caves.
But some people want more natural things to spawn still, they want to be able to line their homes with grass or make an animal area, well then Nature Caves are your thing.
There should also be a special new type of cavern area, spawning rarely. It would be called a "Nature Cave" and would contain grass and tall grass, some water, the occasional sugar cane or pumpkin, Glowstone would spawn naturally on the ceiling above a nature cave, imitating sunlight.
This would also give a source of glowstone without going to The Nether (Which, by the way, would remain unchanged.) Since Nature Caves are rare, animals would be far and few between, and should be saved and farmed. But, every miner needs a food source, right? This adds to the challenge and adventure aspect, finding a Nature cave or perhaps just killing zombies before hunger kills you (Or just brings you down to half a heart, whatever way you play.)
But that would get boring after a while, you say, iaureee came up with an idea with potential.
Yes i want it! But cave generation should be changed strongly, adding more open spaces and more various objects. For example large sources of certain ore, rivers or lakes of water, and so on.
for example something like this:
Ah, but you want more content, perhaps even some sort of underground village? Well, I whipped up an idea for that.
I was thinking about just having the pigman villages abandoned instead of being inhabited, since it would probably be a bit of a hassle to add a whole new mob for one map type, so I am removing the Pigman part of the thread and placing it in this spoiler.
Pigmen would rarely drop food items or ingredients (Never meats) or the sword they carry (Usually iron or stone.), and they will have the same health as a Zombie Pigman. The long time of these creatures underground near the heat of lava has made them resistant to fire, but lava will still hurt them.
The attack power of a Pigman depends on it's sword, if it has a stone sword it does 1 1/2 hearts of damage per hit (Fair since these are pretty common.), the next tier up would be the iron swords, they would do up to 3 hearts of damage per hit, they're pretty rare so it's relatively balanced. Note, all these are on Normal difficulty, lower or raise half a heart of damage for Easy and Hard respectively.
Underground villages would be double the rarity of a regular village, completely abandoned, similar to the Abandoned Mineshaft. Loot could consist of (Going from most common to rarest) sticks, planks, brown or red mushrooms, cobblestone, stone tools, iron ingots, gold ingots, iron tools, potion ingredients* and obsidian. The houses would be made of cobblestone, stone and half slabs, short and large buildings usually pressed close to one another. *Never Netherwart
So let's add a bit of a list.
What this suggestion adds positively
New original map type
Infinite caves (Like the 404 challenge)
Underground villages
Vertical Ravines (Chasms)
Challenge and adventure possibilities
Many, many more ways to die
What this suggestion adds negatively
Harder to get food
Harder to generally survive and thrive
Less chances for wolves or cats
Many, many more ways to die
NOTE:None of these changes affect the other map types in any way.
Thank you for reading my suggestion, it is open to criticism and new ideas at any time. Goodbye and cave on, friends.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
This could be a new dimension instead. But i also think this would be a great world type option. I guess this could be a world type and a dimension.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
As lolbot said the new Anvil system would basically cause this to crash instantly - even if you just stuck with the old world height (around 120) you would still get buttloads more lag whenever you spawn a new chunk...which means that your first few hours would be at a near-standstill if the game didn't crash on you.
That said, this would be interesting as a separate game type (world generation type, whatever), but not so much as a Nether-type world where you can build a portal there or anything. That way survival is actually more difficult because you cannot just go between the Overworld and this Cave World. Something would have to be done about ore locations (perhaps placing diamonds near the top rather than the bottom?) in order to keep it balanced, and I think it would be best just to spawn in a very basic version of a Nature Cave (perhaps having just a single tree and maybe some wheat with a small pool of water) in order to ensure that the player actually has the materials to do something but isn't outright given those materials in a chest.
There might be some problems as far as coding and lessening the amount of lag that would occur, but this could actually be really interesting.

I like this, but there is one issue. You are clearly basing this around the new height limit. Due to the nature of anvil, this would destroy your world with lag. Anvil has cubic chunks, and air chunks aren't loaded. Too many filled chunks causes immense lag.
Also, what levels would ores generate at? Spreading it out means too many ores, leaving it means little to no ores.

Hmm, you raise good points, I didn't know that air chunks were technically not loaded... I'll try and think of a way around this, thanks for the feedback and fair criticism. Also, I'll wait a few days with the poll, then if more people want you to spawn in a Nature Cave, then I'll change the OP. I'll change the OP right now for the ores.

EDIT: Sorry 'bout the block of text, i will add spaces to seperate things.
I say this. World type and dimension. So, It could be chosen as a game mode, or you can create a portal to this.
There could be a single block opening to the top. I mean a 1x1 opening hidden somewhere in the cave. So its extreamly hard to find, though now that i am thinking about it, there needs to be a way to find it. Maybe an item that goes towards it like an ender eye to an end portal.
On top could be a huge city, but only two citizens. With the new update, the citizens can repopulate the city, but to do that, you need to find them. They are traped inside of maybe cages or something. You could use the city as a delving base.
Also, outside of the city, there is an endless grassland. It wont have any seed-dropping grass, just grass as far as you can see. And it would be endless. So, you wouldnt want to adventure out.
This city would only be there if you chose this as a game mode. Otherwise, there is no 1x1 opening.
Maybe the portal could be the same dimensions as the nether portal, but in each corner, you place a glowstone block. This idea may need refining, maybe it could be the same dimensions as a nether portal but made out of solid diamond blocks. Maybe you need to make another portal out of obsidian in the nether and light it, but then the portal colors would be green or something instead of purple.
So yea, there is my addition. Make any changes you see fit, or dont use it at all. This is your idea, its up to you.

It's hard to read mega blocks of text, but from what I read of it I'm not a fan of, I thank you for the suggestion but no thank you, I'd like it to remain a map type like Flatlands.

Not to be annoying, i am, while slightly dissapointed, not pressuring you to accept it, but i dont understand what you mean by flatlands. Would the cave just be totally open? Cause that would be kinda boring. If it will be a network of caves, with some huge caverns, then that makes more sense. Also, what specifically about it do you not like? I will see if i can edit that to make it better.

First off, thanks for editing it, I reread it, but I still dislike it. It kind of ruins the infinite caves aspect of it, gives you a place to run to on the surface. Caveworld is supposed to be a map type, game modes change how you play the game, map types change the generation of the world you play in. Also, it would be a massive cave system, perhaps some boring tunnels, but mainly large chambers and areas. Ravines and mineshafts and things would still spawn, just in a much broader area.

Ok, yea, i see where you are comin from on the aboveground aspect. Scratch that. So map type would be like.....OH YEA! i just remembered the superflat type. Is that what you mean? Mkay, i get that.
But i think it should be a portal place like the nether, only accessable FROM the nether. This way, you can have a harder mode, where you can ONLY go there, or an easier time of it in normal survival. But if you need like 14 diamond blocks (126 diamond) it would still be insanely difficult to get to. But now that i think about it, 126 diamonds? Uh, no thanks.
Maybe you need iron, gold, and diamond blocks to get there, idk, but a portal would be a good idea, just make it a very difficult one to make.

I'm not a fan of using ore blocks for anything but decoration and storage, and once again I'll say it, Minecraft has enough dimensions, it needs to improve on it's current ones before even thinking of making a new one. Map types, however, are something that should be diversified and improved on as they are very lacking in diversity. (Since there's only two map types...)
i like the concept..tho i still think there should be a top level a surface... it might only be 30-40 block hight tho...the rest would be used for "cave space" there could be openings leading up to the surface so light can come in some spots..grass would grow in theses areas... there would be multi lvl cave systems that might not hook togather but thats what mining is for...you can add in cave villages and temple ruins... there would be a greater number of mobs since its under groupnd and hey maybe more dungeons too..

I don't want any above ground area, in my opinion it would ruin the infinite cave aspect of the map type. In regular map styling, when you're injured in a cave you can run back to the surface. In Caveworld, THERE IS NO SURFACE. Nowhere to run but to what you make underground.
@megaman16 well in that case i dont really like your idea... its kinda nice having that infinate cave thing...but i feel it would get too boring to repeditive...you wouldnt have near as many blocks or things to see and do. if you really want "just cave" then just simply dont come to the top...you can spend hours apon hours mining in the game already..if you dont wanna come out then dont...plus no trees and no wood mean no tools cause theres no sticks...

I don't want any above ground area, in my opinion it would ruin the infinite cave aspect of the map type. In regular map styling, when you're injured in a cave you can run back to the surface. In Caveworld, THERE IS NO SURFACE. Nowhere to run but to what you make underground.
