We already have gunpowder. TNT is a 19th century invention. You basically use primitive electricity every time you use redstone dust. A minecart with a furnace is basically a wannabe steam locomotive engine. To say we don't already have a foot in the Victorian Era is a bit silly. However, while I likes my medieval aspects, I also like my more modern swag too. I erect modern skyscrapers next to castles, and build crystal halls under the sea, so to each their own. However, I like dragons and cannons together. I want to bust a cap in a zombie's ass, or in this case, a musket ball. If this was a purely medieval game, I'd be sad. However, I do not believe we should go ultra-modern, either. I believe 1890 is the cut-off date for ideas we should draw from to add to Minecraft.
What I am saying is, can't we go BOTH ways at the SAME TIME? Can't we have swords and sorcery live alongside trains and muskets? Why not have cannons on steamboats that fire potions at fellow players? Enchant a sword with Looting, then take it to your Lab Table (a so-so idea for where you make non-magical equipment alterations, like TNT arrows and specialized musket/cannon ammo, like grapeshot [a couple of regular rounds ground into 5 wads of grape] or quicklime shot [made with Netherrack and Soul Sand], and repair things as well) and mod it further with tech, in this case, redstone dust, and make that klepto sword an electrified klepto sword powered on redstone torches.
Here's my opinion. I agree with industrialization,i absolutely love IC2. But, it isnt minecraft, there should be an entire different game, because minecraft is about building epic stuff (in my opinion) but IC2 is about advancing in tech. I like both, but i want minecraft to stay minecraft.

Notch should just change the stronghold style (since they're built by smart people, like Steve) so we can understand what "Steve" is actually capable of without over-doing it.

I get the feeling some people are seeing the word industrial and reading modern. The industrial revolution happened a long time before cars and airplanes came to be.
I would love to see more steampunk elements in Minecraft alongside all of the monsters and magic. Trains, airships, steam gadgetry, etc.. Trains... please :smile.gif:
What makes Minecraft interesting is the fact that you always have to search for more interesting things and defend yourself against the hostile environment and monsters. Bringing in some too sophisticated or powerful stuff would make the phases of battle and research totally non-challenging, or even noexistent, and most of this stuff would rapidly get useless. In a nutshell, the game would become extremly boring and uninteresting.
Do you know how long it takes to load a musket? Besides, I figure a musket can't one-hit a zombie or a skeleton. I don't really see things like muskets, trains, and steam engines making things non-challenging. As I said before, a minecart w/ furnace is practically a steam locomotive engine already, so we should have a locomotive proper.
Airships would work.
Crossbows yeah.
Wooden Bi-planes maybe.
Tin and Copper to make bronze is a good idea since you couldn't use tin or copper to make tools.
Instead of silver; steel.
Guns; no. Maybe Flintlock pistols or muskets but not AK-47's...
Pretty much the ideas of those of us that like industrialization. I wouldn't go for planes, for that'd be too advanced, but a hot-air balloon or dirigible I could get behind. As for guns, it'd have to be something of the flintlock or wheel lock variety. Percussion caps might be pushing it. Revolvers and cartridge ammo is right out. As for steel, I guess it could used to make stronger boats, and to craft chain mail. Bronze would be nice to make decorative items, and weapons/armor more durable than gold, but weaker than iron.

Can somebody get this man a medal please? But anyways, most things in the victorian age would be absolutely lovely! I love steampunk with a passion, and I see no reason why steamboats, muskets and cannons couldn't be added.

I'm with you in industrialize but nothing to advanced like guns and such. I think Notch should keep everything medivial times or lower but by industrializing I mean add more inventions around that time like writing in books or furnaces(not my ideas) but never leave that time frame just more tools and such.
Also the sorcery stuff in minecraft is so random, Notch seems to be spitting some of these ideas out of his ass.

"out of his ass"? That is complete bull. Listen, a good deal of games have magic as a component, and you're calling this pulled out of Notch's ass? I like the new system.
Well, I'd say, why not both? The medieval bit is fun, but I would like to see guns. Crossbows would work as well, And It'd be nice to have something more powerful than a mine cart with a furnace (for those of us unable to acquire enough materials for more than one powered rail). And I like the idea of copper and silver. It'd be fun to be able to make furniture stuff from gold and silver as well, since silver would likely be as useless as gold for anything else.
By simplifying I mean removing hemp and instead you just grind up any plant, removing tanning and cauldrons and instead you just use leather to make belts and probably stopping the development to when you start using bottled souls in crafting recipes.
The number of useless intermediate items in that mod annoy me too.
Take those out and that's what an industrialized Minecraft might look like.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
I am convinced that most people who argue against these sorts of proposals know nothing of when any given technology was actually invented, and get most of their "expert" information out of the fiction section.
What the heck are you talking about dude. This is a stupid suggestion, Minecraft has nothing to do with guns and high tech stuff. Minecraft is a Survival/Sandbox/Creative game. You can do what ever you want. Why do we need Minecraft to be more modern. I can see Trains and crossbows but not guns, planes, and cars that's too much for notch.
And why do you think minecraft is so Medieval. There's no castle's spawning, yes there's villages but seriously like I said minecraft is a survival/Sandbox/Creative game..
I think that the incorporation of these types of objects into the base minecraft would be very good. Now, don't get me wrong, you shouldn't be able to just start out by making teleporters and force fields BUT I think that these would make great additions to the game. I have played industrial craft and really came to enjoy it because, it isnt just "oooh i'm in advanced technology now I don't have to work anymore" it takes FOREVER to get to a high level of advancement (without cheats, of course) and the rarer ores (diamond) which are necessary to much of the advanced technology is still very hard to come by. I like to think that Minecraft isn't about being in mediaval ages and making artwork for no reason. It is about developing further and further in a far reaching cycle. NOW just because we can have jetpacks doesn't mean that it will omit the usability of ye-old enchanting table, heck, I imagine that Notch could make it so that you could HAVE to enchant some items in order to leap farther in the future of technology. Never once has Notch stated that Minecraft's theme was in the medieval ages that is only an assumption that most people have developed while playing a game that isn't even completed yet. I wholeheartedly support this idea because I know that Notch could make it very balanced so that you could obtain a MUCH more enjoyable playing experience.

^ And soon to be capture the flag. But, Notch has never said that Minecraft was never going to get high tech... and it is kind of wrong to pass judgement over someones suggestion. Not to call you out but saying it is stupid doesn't say anything at all, it is better to just post about the pros and cons of this being added.
You need to understand that Minecraft can go in any direction. It does not have to be about Industrializing everthing. It also does not need to be all World of Warcraft. I love Minecraft because of its simple nature. Notch really does not need to change that.
I think it should be a choice of what age in time your world would be...you know like in World Options and shiznit and if you don't choose its regular minecraft. For example like Dinosaur ages...ummm dark ages...colonial ages.... modern ages....Future...and Post Apocalypse you know stuff like that....and i think it sounds like a pretty good idea... :biggrin.gif:

How is magic and sorcery going back in time??? I mean look at minecraft now all there is is villages and freaking lava!!! Oh wait yea skeletons to...im pretty sure magic is going forward.... I think it's a pretty good idea

Minecraft SHOULD NOT develop in the same way as our world. Instead of just dumping our technology into Minecraft, Notch should adapt current Minecraft resources to function in a similiar way to our technology.
Eg. Liquid petroleum flamethrower with a pump and gas igniter NO
Redstone powered lava spewing dispenser OK
Not every resource or item in our world has to appear or function in the same way in Minecraft.
I kinda see where you're coming from, and I agree about the whole industrialization aspect, but... The way people have been suggesting is, well, wrong. Minecraft should be about advancement. When you start off, you only have your wooden and stone tools to protect you from the elements and to help you thrive. Then you find iron and start making yourself better tools, weapons, and armor... and eventually you find diamonds, which is where your progression ends. So if you put it that way, Minecraft is really short to 'complete'. But obviously, finding diamonds is one out of billions of things you can really do. Still, it would be nice to progress further than the 'diamond age', which really doesn't even make sense to begin with. You can't shape diamonds into tools.
But anyways, for an industrial Minecraft, there should be a logical progression of technology. Right now, it's wood->stone->iron->diamonds. Pretty sophisticated, right? The current system of progression in Minecraft is completely tool/resource based. You apparently start the game, already knowing how to make things out of diamonds; you just don't have the resources. But for technology/industry/progression, it should be a little more fleshed out. Instead of resource progression, it should be technology progression. For example: You start out like you normally do, in the wild with nothing. You punch some trees, make some wood tools, and collect your starting resources. But what's this? You can't make a pickaxe. Why not? You don't know how to mine yet, and you probably don't want to. What kind of person who's stranded in the wild would immediately think: Oh, I need to dig a mine. No one. In fact, doing that would probably decrease your chances of survival. Technologies would be things you unlock, kinda like achievements. Actually, exactly like achievements, now that I think about it. You need specific acheivements to get to the later ones, and it would be that with technologies. But, I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to mine on your first day of Minecraft... that wouldn't make any sense. The beginning technologies would be easy to unlock, but the later ones would get more difficult. The final technologies would be early industrial age stuff: Steam Engines, Pistols, etc.
Well, anyways, that's my take on it. Of course, I doubt that would be a good game to sell to people, (unless you're like me), but it would sure make one heck of a mod.

Fantasy and sci-fi can get along.

-Enchanting
-Potions
-Stronghold
-Nether fortresses
-Portals
All of these are kinda medieval...
