Right, but what if the player wanted to place blocks around the ship to make it look custom?
I don't know about that. Maybe there could be different cuztomizable features to it like colored wool sails, and maybe different types of wood used to build the ship to give it different colors (Hey Thesaurus, you should add that). But adding blocks to the exterior, that may be to hard.

I've already discussed block ships vs. fixed entities a bunch of times. Here are (most) of my reasons:
It would allow for ugly/physically impossible ships (Many people don't seem to realize that a ship's draft extends deeper into the water than they think)
It would allow for obscene ships. No SS Phallus for you.
The process in creating such a ship would be awkward. In every ship mod I've seen that has this process, it involves a giant hollow cube or something similar in which to build a block ship inside of. To put it simply, it doesn't fit into the gameplay quite as smoothly.
The vanilla boat is already a fixed entity, making block ships just wouldn't make much sense at all.
It could theoretically lag the game much worse than fixed-entity ships.
*EDIT* I've added the download link to the original SketchUp models in the OP. Have fun with them!
thats a neat idea but personally I think it would be cool if they could be customizable. They look kinda...well crude. no offense.
If it were my choice as a player I would want to make it look like this -_^ :
Perhaps if it included some kind of raft base that could be used as is but could also be changed by adding blocks to the base. Depending on the size of the base you create the more blocks that can be added. Idk just an idea.
how about instead you could make a dry dock where you can create your own ships you could craft the blueprint for it by surrounding paper with lapis and craft the boat in the dry dock( this means the dry dock would hollow out an are near water that you could change the size of in a GUI) although there would have to be a set skeleton of the boat in the dock, depending on how bid it is, and then you can build off of it.

If i were Jeb/ Dinnerbone i would wait till 1.5 to put this in... And This is a HUGE suggestion but i would also port the game to c++ so people would stop complaining about lag and fps.
This has already been addressed but I'll do it real quick in case you were unaware of it. If it were to be coded in C++ then it would no longer be cross-platform. They coded it in Java not only because they were familiar with it but also because then people with Macs (I'll never understand those people) and linux could still play Minecraft. In short: MORE MONEY for Mojang. Also the general consensus is that it being in C++ would only marginally affect the fps if at all and anyone saying it would or wouldn't is purely speculating....
I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory,
Some happy, some sad,
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had,
We lived happily forever, so the story goes,
But somehow we missed out, on the pot of gold,
But we'll try, best that we can,
To CaaaaRRY ON!
I really like this idea. To make it simple to constuct, you could place a boat in the water and then put other boats around it, like building a platform. Then just use other blocks for the rest of it.
Although, there might be a problem with programing a large moving mass of blocks in the game.
This is one of the few things I want from the suggestion forums incoporated into vanilla minecraft. I WANT TO SAIL THE OCEAN BLUE, so some s for you!!!

A gathering of angels appeared above my head,
They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said;
They said, come sail away come sail away, Come sail away with me (Lads)
Come sail away come sail away, Come sail away with me,
Come sail away come sail away, Come sail away with me,
Come sail away come sail away, Come sail away with meeeeeeeeeeee ......

● You see that little link up there? Yeah, the idea is in the link (or the spoiler). I've explained it rather thoroughly how the boats work. While I would love it for you to give me your two cents, this thread is not for people to make up entirely their own ideas on how the boats work.
To clarify, I've already explained how boats would be built, and it's already rather simple. More simple than mashing small boats together. You put resources into a Shipwright block along with a blueprint for a specific ship and, once you have enough, it automatically spawns a ship in the largest body of water the Shipwright is facing. Provided you pressed the button to spawn it.
Man, I would love boats with a propulsion system that rivals powered rails, to give us an excuse to build canals and work on watery infrastructure in our minecraft world, which would fit the general medieval theme.
And in terms of a larger ocean update, Krakens ohgodyes. Or possibly... a coral reef biome, filled with fish mob we'd all love to implement. And sharks or something.
Give me an excuse to build the panama canal please!
Dude, this is so epic. with your skills, I bet you can also make an RV. In Minecraft, a movable vehicle with beds, a table a chest, furnace, crafting table, and all the necessary things to live including a steering wheel. This boat thing is epic though, man. You should work for Mojang!

All I do is illustrate, dude. I don't think I can help Mojang with that, unless they need ideators
As for the RV...I hope you mean as a mod, I don't think having Winnebagos roaming around the Nether is exactly fitting.

Dinnerbone is not annoyed. He simply asked for us to not do the mass tweet. In fact, he asked this before we even started.
