So it had been a very long time since I originally made this suggestion. A lot of things have changed in Minecraft, but I think that this suggestion would still fit in just as well as before, if not better. In addition, I have added a lot of new ideas to this suggestion to make it better, so this is not just a shameless bump. Note however that the original post has not been edited in any way, all the new ideas are located at the very bottom of this post in a brand new section. I highly recommend first reading the original post and then reading the new ideas before posting. Thank you.
Some Quick Notes
Intro:I know spears and battle axe's have been suggested before, and there are mods for it, but I'm giving these two weapons a different point of view, so that it's balanced and may appeal to all players. Hey there everyone, thanks for checking out my post! As you might have guessed from the title, I'm going to talk about two new weapons, the lethal spear, and the fearsome battle axe today. I decided to write some quick notes on how the descriptions are going to be organized. In this section, "Intro" I would be putting some facts on how the spear or battle axe (depending on which I will be talking about) has played a role in the history of man kind. This section, "Intro" would be skip able, as it's facts are mainly for fun/information about the weapon irl.
Crafting: In this section, I would be putting how the weapon would be crafted. I recently found out about the- -feature, that you can use while writing posts, so I shall be using that. After showing how the weapon would be crafted, I'll go on why it would be crafted that way.
Uses: After I show how the weapon would be crafted, I'll tell about it's uses. I'll try to make it as in-depth as possible, what it could be used for, it's disadvantages, all that good stuffs
Special Attack: This is the good stuff, special attacks! In this section, I will be putting each weapons (including the sword's) special attack! What are special attacks you ask? Well, it's a new concept I made up; basically, each weapon will have a unique attack that they may use. The special attack would deal some extra durability on the weapon, and may deal like 1/2 heart damage to the player, but also maybe not. I'm not sure how special attacks would be activated. I was thinking about right click, but that may not be the best idea. There would also be a "cool down time" that would stop the player from just spamming special attacks. When I say cool down time, I don't mean a little bar that decreases until you can use again, but I rather mean that something would actually physically stop your player. Well yea, that's all for the quick notes. Now that we've gotten everything covered, lets move on to the first weapon; The Spear.
The Spear
Intro: Since the begining of mankind, the spear has been used as a tool... and as a lethal weapon. Ancient Mesopotamian hunters used the spear to pick fruit off of high trees, and to hunt their prey. Later, the legendary Spartans of Greece used a javelin (a throw able type spear) as their main line of offence. With aim, power, and skill, a javelin could be thrown unthinkable distances and efficiently kill not just one, but two warriors at once. Even in pre-modern warfare such as WWII, riflemen had attached bayonets (or a spearhead) at the end of their rifles, and used it to attack with strikingly similarities to a spear.
Crafting: If you can't see that, the spear is crafted like a shovel, but with material at the center slot's left and right. If you look closely at it, it looks a bit like a spear, does it? Well yea, the spear uses three material so it shouldn't be too hard to craft.
Uses: The spear sacrifices power for range. By this, I mean that the spear deals less damage than the sword, but since it's a long weapon, you may use it to attack enemies two blocks away. = player, = range
Because of this feature, the spear would be useful for engaging creepers, spiders, and perhaps even the new endermen. Like how you can attack at level, you may also attack mobs at the higher block than you. Right now, you can attack an enemy that's one block higher than you. With the spear, you may attack mobs that are two blocks higher than you! The spear would just be a quick lunge, so it would have the same attack speed as the sword. And just to make it easier, the spear will have the same durability as the sword.
Special Attack: You may have already guessed this, the spear's special attack is to throw it. Your player would raise it a bit and then spartan-throw the spear like a javelin! I imagine it's physics would work like an arrow, but I'm not really sure. If the spear hits a mob, it would deal more damage than if you just went up and stabbed it. The cool down time of this weapon would be that if you threw the spear, you would be weaponless until you went and retrieved it.
The Battle Axe
Intro: Despite contrary belief, the axe was used as a weapon before a tool. Even at times as earliest as the stone age, stone axes were used for warfare as a good hit could easily cleave through an enemy tribesman's head. It was only later that mankind found that the axe could just as easily cut through a tree as it could through flesh. One of the most popular uses of the battle axe was with the fearsome Vikings. These sea raiders would close in on small fishing villages, before striking out with their deadly battle axes for the depths of Valhalla.
Crafting: In case you can't see that, the battle axe is crafted like an axe, but double edged so each side. The battle axe used five material, so it's hard to make.
Uses: The battle axe sacrifices speed for power. I mean that it's slower than a sword, but deals more damage. When I say "slower" I don't mean that it swings slower, but rather has a slight delay between each deadly swing. Other than those two things, the battle axe works a lot like the sword. Useful for engaging high health enemies.
Special Attack: I personally like the battle axe's idea, but it's a bit hard to explain. Basically, the player slams the battle axe into the ground, and surrounding mobs are momentarily stunned. It would work like this ( = player, = enemies):
As you can see, the special attack has a large area of effect. There is of course, a downside to balance it out. First of all, the special attack doesn't deal any damage, but just stuns them. Next, the stun only lasts for about a second, allowing you to hit maybe only one enemy, so it's more useful for escape situations. Third, the player is almost never surrounded by that many enemies at once, so it would be more used for a two maybe three mobs at once rather than all eight. When a mob is stunned, not only does it disable movement, but other things at once. For example: Creepers can't explode, Skeleton's can't shoot arrows, Ghasts can't spit fireballs, Zombies can't err.. growl? It's cool down time would be that after you use the special attack, you can't use it again for thirty seconds.
The Sword
Intro: Okay so as you know, there is already a sword in the game. You already know how to craft it, how to use it, what advantage/disadvantages it has, etc. What you don't know is it's special attack. So I will be skipping the "crafting" and "uses" section and just go to telling it's special attack.
Special Attack: If you've ever played "Legend of Zelda" you should know of Link's 360 spin attack. Well, the sword's special attack is like that. Let me show you ( = player, = enemies):
The actual attack would deal the same amount of damage as a regular sword slash, but it could hit multiple enemies so it's good. The attack would also have an increased knock-back, so it could be useful to knock mobs off cliff sides or something. What would be really cool about this would be that since the game is both third and first-person, so in first-person, you'd actually be able to see the mobs you hit as you spin around. The cool down of this would be that after you do the spin attack, your player would be momentarily dazed for a second. And to actually successfully use the spin attack again, you would have to wait for the mobs to close in on you again.
So yea, that's all for now. I really want to thanks you for reading all this. This took awhile to write, so if you read this, even a simple "I liked this idea" would do millions. Once again, thanks for reading.
New Ideas
To Special Attacks: Since this idea was created, the ability to block attacks by pressing right-click has been added. As you know, holding down right click was how the special attacks were activated. Because of this, I have decided to change the special attack activation from holding down the right-click, to holding down the attack button (left-click). Tell me what you think of this change.
To Spears: I have done a lot of thinking about spears and have come to the conclusion that, even if they are weaker than swords, they are still kind of over powered. Why you ask? Well imagine this. All you have on you is a sword and you are trying to attack a guy with a spear. But everytime you even go into range of his two block range, you are pushed back from knockback. This keeps going on until he kills you. Frustrating, no? For this reason, I have decided that spears should have no knockback, or at the very least, a very small amount of it. Another thing that I have been thinking of is the spear's special attack. While it might have been an original idea once, throwing the spear has become very overly suggested. Also, since special attacking has been switched to holding down the attack button, players may accidently throw their spear without meaning to when rapidly pressing attack. For this reason, combined with the change above, I have thought of a new special attack for the spear. Throughout history, the spear has always been used more as a defensive weapon rather than an attacking one. The ancient Hoplites of Sparta's infamous Phalanx formation brought rue to enemies for hundreds of years. Later, the medieval pikeman devastated both cavalry and other infantry until even early colonial times! The new special attack of the spear is the charged lunge. Your character charges up the spear by pulling it back and then ferociously lunges at the enemy. The attack does not do extra damage, however, but instead does extra knockback! A fully charged lunge will push your enemy pack pretty far. The disadvantage is that moving will break the charge, so you need to stay completely still. Also, horses are going to be added in the next update. Spears have always been used to counter cavalry, so perhaps the charged lunge could do extra damage to horses or something? To those of you who really liked the idea of throwing a spear, perhaps we could still implement it? Like instead of the spear having a throwing ability, there could be a weapon called the javelin that does even less damage than the spear but you can throw it. Or maybe throwing the spear could be moved to right-clicking. I really can't imagine blocking with a spear, so why not add throwing there instead? Not being able to block could also be another disadvantage that the spear has to the sword. Imagine getting a fully charged lunge at an enemy and then nailing them with your throwing spear. Tell me what you think.
I like the current Minecraft ways. Each tool has a use that no other tool can fill.
The pick is the only ore-miner
The Shovel is the only fast digger
The axe is th eonly fast wood-harvester
The sword is the only fast melee weapon
The bow is the only damaging ranged weapon, and will soon be much slower than the sword
Wolves are the only tameable hostile pets
An axe? Sounds like another version of the sword
A spear? It's just combining the bow and the sword with lots of resources in the middle.
In short I really can't say I like thi sidea. Nice work on the post, but I still don't like it.

At a loss for words? Here's a few you can use: Welcome, to Night Vale...
Great ideas, I'm tired of just having 2 weapon options in Minecraft, but I think the cooldown for the battleaxe is a little too much, maybe it should use up more durability and have it's cooldown decreased to 15 seconds, with a little bar. I don't know where the bar should go.
I wasn't ignoring you? You said you like the current minecraft ways, so even if this thread was different you still won't like it. You said yourself, you like sword as the only melee weapon, and bow as the only ranged weapon. There isn't really anything to discuss with that.
If you just straight up say that you don't want any more tools, that shows you're not open to new ideas. Now if you said you didn't like the tools, that shows your still open to ideas, but just didn't like how my idea was. If you say that, it tells me that there is still a way I can make my idea better so that you would like it.
On a side note, I've read all the posts so far, so no one should feel ignored.
I can't tell if you're trolling or not. If you are, that is a very rude thing to say. I took my entire morning, my own time, hard work, and dedication to make this thread. If you don't like it, just say it. No need to try and purposely make me sad. And if you think it's funny to say something like that, it's not.
If you are serious, then I apologize. It's just that there are so many people that try and just ruin someone, taking sarcasm to far. I personally don't like gun's in minecraft. Modern weapons would somewhat spoil the feeling the game has. If you are thinking old fashion weapons like muskets, those could be added, but probably not as they would probably be too overpowered. As for rocket launchers, I can't see myself agreeing with that in any way. Some people suggest adding "cannons" to the game, but there is already a way to make a cannon that fit's with minecraft's theme. If you would like to learn how to make one of these water and tnt powered canons, I suggest just searching it, you'd be sure to find some guides on how to.

I'm saying that if there is to be a new tool in Minecraft, it's going to need to have a new use not yet seen in the game. It can't just be a remake of another weapon.

Reminds me of something I posted on another thread.
Ah, there it is.
May have been the attack range demonstration images.
Anyways, +Support for Swords as a general, balanced weapon and then specialized weapons (those being Battle Axes, Spears)
When I was thinking of how to demonstrate the attacks, the idea randomly came to me. Now I remember that I actually got it from seeing your post :tongue.gif:. Anyways, thanks for that idea, it's pretty good.
So it had been a very long time since I originally made this suggestion. I like the idea, I didn't even have to read it to know that, there is only one problem. These are very very, extremely posted on here. I posted a topic about battle axes. I just wish people would search before they submit the idea without thinking.

The problem is that you didn't read the post. I even bolded the section where I make note that this idea has been suggested before. If you actually read the suggestion, you will see that this has many different ideas and features that makes this particular suggestion unique. Also, I'm pretty sure that this topic was made before yours, which makes you somewhat hypocritical. Thanks for liking my idea though. If I sound mad, don't worry, I'm not.
A spear? It's just combining the bow and the sword with lots of resources in the middle.
Er... well, I'm not sure I agree with you. At least, not on that. I have a lot of respect for your argument about each tool fulfilling one role well, but I think there's room for more if we wanted it.
I think that the idea of a spear having more range in hand-to-hand combat is really nice! It would add more variety to pvp without breaking combat, in my opinion.
In regards to the OP - I think that we ought to ditch the special attacks, especially for the spear. If a spear is short enough to throw accurately, the extra length compared to a sword is negligible, and if it's long enough to have an advantage against a sword, it probably can't be thrown well. Do you see what I mean?
The spear can be short and sweet. Just extra range and lower attack power. The knockback from attacks would be enough for a skilled spear-user to keep a swordsman at bay.

I would recommend checking the Spear section under "New Ideas". Even before you posted, I had already made some pretty drastic changes to how the spear works, including even a new special attack for it that would make it more balanced.
I LOVE the ideas bro Especial the spear since the Skeleton Mobs in a group get a little to over powered and are hard to kill with a sword at long range.

If I sound mad, don't worry, I'm not.
one smaller thing though, would steve use both arms to hold the spear (because it's long)
and two arms for the battle axe (because that much iron/diamonds/stone has got to be heavy)
other than that support
EDIT: if you say this account is newer than 2 years yes I didn't have an account and still read stuff. blame my laziness.

Er... well, I'm not sure I agree with you.
