I like this idea, but it seems better suited towards its own game mode, rather than an addition to the main survival gameplay.
It sort of is a seperate game mode.
You choose whether to play it or not. The difference is that, instead of clocking a seperate button, you CHOOSE to find the obelisk and activate it. It would be like activating the new game from within the game
I love the idea, 100%! for you.
But, this forum is things that should be in the game NOT as a mod. So please, stop saying it should be a mod.
Also, if you don't like it because it isn't a sandbox element, I can do a little thinking for you: Don't activate it
Its avoidable, it isn't a "Oh, after x days, it happens". No, it is avoidable.
WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)
Should probably be a mod. Noobs that aren't "in the know" might stumble upon the weapon and release the fog without being the slightest bit prepared for it.

I'll be working on it more tomorrow. Today was a bit busy, because we had to go buy some stuff at the store for me to eat over the week im staying here.
What do you guys think of mini-fog monsters, that are actually blobs made of BLOCKS. More blocks are added every time they "eat" (kill) something.
Perhaps if two run into each other it can combine the two together?

Sounds pretty cool. What if the more blocks they have, the more health they have and the more damage they do, but the slower they move?

I think this has the potential to become a very interesting game aspect, well done!
About the blob monsters: Hmm, I think a snake version would be cool. It starts off as a two-three block snake and eats more blocks/surviving mobs to expand. I also suggest that when you try and get the weapon and armour out for the first time, a window pops up with teh warning:
IF YOU TAKE THIS, YOU WILL UNLEASH THE FOG. THE FOG IS EXTREMELY TOUGH, NO STRUCTURES ARE SAFE. IT HAS MANY EVIL CREATURES, DO NOT TAKE THE CHALLENGE LIGHTLY. YOU WILL DIE AND RESPAWN IF YOU TAKE THE ARMOUR AND WEAPONS, WITH NOTHING BUT THE ARMOUR AND WEAPONS. RETURN THEM TO THE OBELISK FOR A REWARD AND TO REMOVE THE FOG.

I've got a creeper and I'm not afraid to explode it!
I think a big pup-up window kind of destroys the immersion.
Heres the thing: You would have to craft the compass that would point towards it (I will add this to OP soon), and to know how to craft the special compass, you would need to check the wiki, which would have the info about the Fog on it.
Or, be uber-1337 tricked by an oldphag.
Steve McOldmember says "Don't worry Steve Mcnoob! That compass points you towards a fortress that has awesome tools in it! Nothing bad happens at all either! It's sweet!
Steve McNoob: Oh okay! (makes compass)
Steve McNoob: Oh sweet! Vanquishers blade! (removes from chest0
Steve McNoob: What the... why is there purple and black fog... (checks wiki) FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU....
Well, considering you need to put the sword and the armor back to seal the fog, it isn't game breaking.
This also means you can let the fog back out whenever you want to fight it again.
Ah, I didn't know that.
Wait... so all you gotta do is find the obelisk, take the armor and sword, get respawned, find your way back to the obelisk while braving the new monsters and lighting conditions, put the sword and armor back, and that's it?

Pretty much.
But it's going to be hard. You get sent back to your original spawn point, and these new mobs are incredibly powerful.

well, is there some reward for completing this task? Maybe a golden apple or some other special item appears in your inventory after you seal the fog away?
Also, even though I still think this should be a mod, I think there should probably be a special mob or two that only appears underground and maybe have something big guarding the obelisk while the fog is free. The source of the roar you heard upon its release, perhaps?

That would be the boss monster.
Not sure what it would look like, but I have an idea for it to not really be a single mob.
You'll fine out when I update the OP with it.
As for a reward, I'll try to come up with something. I'm not really sure what it should be though.
I think the best thing would be a status object and nothing more.
The main reason I don't really like it is it almost seems as if there are two games: Minecraft, and the Fog. One is a sandbox game about exploring, building, mining and crafting in a pseudo-fantasy world. The other is about fighting and desperation in. They don't have much in common, other then both taking place in the same world. It just isn't like the rest of minecraft.

needless to say, it was much less interesting after that point...

the creature would move by deleting a block behind it and creating a new block in front of it.
And yes, smaller ones would do this more quickly, and larger ones would take longer to do it.
To kill it, you must destroy the blocks it is made of. A sword destroys them the quickest, but anything will do.

Maybe a dense collection of floating blocks that form a giant head or something?
And yeah, I was thinking the reward should be a consumable item so you have a reason to do it again other than insanity.
