Overview:
Melody ore is a new ore that is more of a luxory than a neccessity. It looks like a stone block with purple music notes on it. Like diamond, coal, redstone, and lapis ore, it drops an ingot right away. It drops 1-2 Melody Crystals. Melody ore is around the same frequency of lapis, but found layer 0 - 40. Melody ore changes a few crafting recipes so they make a bit more sense. It also has a lot of potential for things not suggested here.
Modified Crafting Recipies:
Jamming a diamond into some wood. I don't really see how that makes it a jukebox capable of playing music. A jukebox will be crafted with 8 wood, and a Melody Block in the middle. Melody Blocks are 9 Melody Crystals. A noteblock will also be changed to 8 wood and 1 Melody Crystal.
This may leave some of you thinking: "Hey, jukeboxes are too easy to get now!" I personally think getting a jukebox shouldn't be a challenge. I think the challenge should be in getting the records.
New Crafting Recipes:
In all of these, = Melody Crystal
Bell:
Attach this to any door, and it will make a ringing sound when it is opened. It can also be connected to the top of blocks, so in a 2 block high passage a noise will be made when it is touched. And for one last purpose, it can be placed on top of a block so that it makes a ring when right-clicked. So many purposes, one item!
Hunting Horn:
The hunting horn, when used, scares away passive mobs and makes one far away despawn. If possible, it forces hostile mobs to spawn. Perfect for when you need to get some monster supplies, or notify your friends of where you are. Has 20 uses.
Dog Whistle:
In this diagram, leaves represent reeds. Why reeds? Because I thought of them like a straw, and that seemed better than 1 iron. Basically, this will summon all your wolves to you, even if they are sitting. Great if you need them in a hurry.
Noteblock Connector:
This produces 10 noteblock connectors. They are small little wires pointing upwards. The purpose of this is that you place it on top of the noteblock, and when thay note is played, it plays all the noteblocks within a 1 block radius instantly. This can be used for easy chords, using your hand to play multiple notes instantly, and probably more.
Soundwave Chisel:
This chisel would assist in finding caves or open underground areas. When you hit a stone block, you will hear a sound. The more air blocks in a 10 block radius, the higher pitched it will be. Almost no air blocks would be a clunking sound, but if you were right on the edge of a cave it would sound like a light plinking sound. This could be used for cave searching. It has a durability of 50 uses.
There are so many more potential possibilities.
So that's Melody Ore. An ore that makes a few craftables make more sense, and it also is open to several possibilities, such as instruments, alarms, and more.
This is a great idea, and while saying that something doesn't make logical sense in minecraft is a bad idea when you look at many things in minecraft, it has balance logic to it.
What I mean by balance logic is that why should I have to find the RAREST ore in the game just to make a block that places one note... which I need another semi-rare ore to use. Although this idea is also rare, it drops 1-2 which makes it more common along with the 0-40 area to find it. Granted 0-40 might be a bit to common so maybe only 0-20.
The hunting horn is a bit silly, but it's very balanced so it would be nice.

Overall you have a really good idea.
At first I wasn't going to change the recipes for the jukebox and noteblock, but I feel like sound-related things should be consistant with ores. Because if notch adds instruments, we can't just be jamming diamonds into brass and wood.
Balance: 9/10
Pretty well balanced. Because this is mostly a utility and not a major gameplay item, this is has about the right difficulty.
Usefulness: 6/10
I'm afraid this is where you fall down. There isn't much need for a new item, as most of this could be crafted with redstone, an ore that fits a similar hole. Most of it's uses are not that important, and I'd like to see it have a more powerful use. The need for a new ore is not that great, and I think that redstone could do many of these things, without the need for a new ore.

In my opinion, redstone is more based on electricity. Note blocks don't seem like they run on electricity, and instruments wouldn't run on electricity either.

Presentation: 5/5
Other then a little minor grammar, this is perfect.
Originality: 5/5
Very original idea. I actually really like the idea of an ore that is musical and magical. Never seen anything like it.
Detail: 9/10
Detail is pretty good, but I would like to know a little more about it. How are the blocks crafted? Can you make tools?
Theme: 10/10
Perfect. Fits pseudo-fantasy theme greatly.

the hunting horn - good idea but i think it should atract creepers or something so it has a down side.
new resipes please :smile.gif:
im a wolf tamer
Talk'in bout minecraft
Attatchable to doors, it's block can still be walked through, and it makes a ringing sound instead of a note sound. Not terribly useful, I'll admit.
As for new crafting recipes, I'll make some soon.
Tell me what you think, and I'm open to changes and new things.
