It would be nice if we didnt have to kill creepers or ghasts for gunpowder (or find it in dungeons). Maybe a new mineral (sulfur) and charcoal combines to make gunpowder?
maybe:
[sulfur] [charcoal] [sulfur]
[charcoal] [sulfur] [charcoal]
[sulfur] [charcoal] [sulfur]
?
sulfur would probably just have the same texture as the ores except itd be yellow of course
Nah, I like working to make mob traps or killing creepers with my usual bow and arrow.
Either way, a medium-sized mob trap (approx 30x30) produces a good 64 gunpowder per hour, just about. Assuming you torch out the area and caverns- something a normal "starter" world would do.
There is so much ignorance in this topic that I do not know where to begin, and so I will just ignore it.
I like the idea of being able to produce Gunpowder through the proper real-world means, and thus having access to TNT through ingenuity instead of just luck and risk. On a side note, what the hell is with people feeling that people playing on Peaceful should be penalized? That's just petty, antisocial thinking. Besides, wouldn't people playing on harder settings be the ones having it easy? While on Peaceful, you could only make gunpowder through complicated crafting, requiring the finding of scattered pockets of minerals. People on higher difficulty, on the other hand, can farm it off mobs, which takes much less effort. So to KaosRitual I say, "Good sir, you entirely fail at logic."
And what other purpose would sulphur cover?
If it’s just to make gunpowder, it’s seems rather pointless to add when you can just go out and kill creepers or ghasts.
They are really not that hard to kill, especially creepers.
Whack them once and backtrack until they stop hissing, lure them into to water to make it even easier.

I'm not an idiot, PugRme, I know that gunpowder has sulfur, (char)coal, and potassium nitrate in it (although, sulfur and (char)coal works, as well as other combinations), but I don't think that Notch will want to put two otherwise useless materials in Minecraft, as opposed to one, just to make the crafting more realistic.
Also, I dont feel like retyping to add another quote (as I'm typing this I have no idea how to add another quote without starting over...), but anyway, I'm agreeing with AnonTheMouse in the fact that I was thinking it would make the game a little more realistic in gameplay.
In fact, playing Minecraft on peaceful, as opposed to the other difficulties, can actually make the game more realistic in a way (aside from the fact that there are no threats from other entities).

Its Minecraft, I don't like making it more realistic.
If you want gunpowder so much, just make a mob trap.
Gives a full stack of TNT a day.

Sulfur could be implemented as bone-meal alternative to fertilizer
This topic has good support on both sides of the table.
For Sulfur
This would ultimatly make the game more realistic. Find a real world rock that does exsist in real life, rather than hitting up an imaginary green thing that has suicidal patterns. It would also allow the gathering of TNT on peaceful. Making it fair for those who don't have a large sense of adventure.
Against Sulfur
People against this simple ore say that it makes griefing easier. I would like to counter that with a spin-off of a saying. TNT doesn't grief, people grief. The only reason I even gather TNT is to quickly clear large underground spaces. People also say that with this, Creepers and Ghasts have no real use, other than mobs. Look at zombies people. They drop feathers, which are gathered much more quickly by chickens. Others say that playing on higher difficulty should be more rewarding. Why should the fighting enept players be punished? Why should those who value their creations, and wish for them to not be creeper'ed be at fault? This isn't some sort of "Social Darwism Theory", where the survival of the best make it!
I personally would like to see this in game. Sulfur should be extremely sparse, and be slightly more rare than gold, yet less rare than diamond.
I like this idea. I've supported it in the past.
Personally, I think it should be possible to craft stone in a way to create gunpowder/sulfur/whatever people feel like calling it then just make TNT.
With the use of mob traps, there is basically no risk anyways. Hell, I use fishing rods in order to catch mobs and pull them in!!
The only things I need to worry about are:
1: Falling (hasn't happened in MONTHS
2: Arrows that wont kill you in one shot. (And I use leather armor most of the time).

[sulfur] [charcoal] [sulfur]

So you say , we have to kill creepers and nthen combine it with charcoal to craft gunpowdeR?
That is just stupid , Killing a creeper or ghast is enough...

I would make a mob farm, but every time I do it lasts about a day or so (in-game time) and then mobs stop spawning for some reason...
