My friend and I just got an interesting idea. What if there was the potential of making your own diamonds?
In order to keep with the realism, one would have to do the following:
1) Gather a large amount of coal. I was thinking about 16 coal pieces per diamond piece.
2) Create a compressor of some sort, of which is how it is made. You place the coal inside of the compressor, along with something for it to cook with (which very well could be just more coal) and then let it cook.
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS IDEA:
It could potentially replace mining for diamond. This would have to be a difficult alternative then.
I recently had the same idea.:smile.gif:
In the real world, Diamond is actually Carbon, formed by millions of years of hot pressure deep inside the Earth. But I have to ask, what materials would you use to make it?
I mean, the closest you could get in MineCraft is burning coal with fire, or lava.
Above all, I like the idea, but It needs more thought.

No, crafting diamonds would be overpowered and unbalanced.
You know you can make charcoal right? Notch said that the only difference between coal and charcoal is how they are obtained and they cant be stacked together. If you have a tree farm, a furnace and a compressor, you would have a diamond farm. There should only be one way to obtain diamonds, and that is through mining. They are easy enough to find as is, if you know where to look.
I'm fine with mining to get diamonds. Crafting diamonds will just destroy the purpose of diamonds. The fun of getting minerals like diamonds is mining and I am very happy with that.
Sure, why not? 16 is a bit low however. Just make it take two stacks of coal and make sure that both are consumed in the process and you only receive one diamond. Seems fair enough to me since you could have probably mined more diamonds in the time in takes you to get two stacks of coal.
I think it's a decent idea, but it should be way harder to create diamonds.
How about 9 x 64 pieces of coal placed in a furnace to cook, requiring 64 pieces of coal as a source to create "hard coal". Hard coal needs to be placed in lava, with lava on all sides, and with no less than 3 blocs on top of the hard coal. After 10 days you would have your industrial diamond.
It honestly doesn't matter how much you try to balance it with "It takes 256 coal and 10 minecraft days". This will turn something that is about exploring, adventuring and mining into a mundane, monotonous collecting job.

Any ideas?
EDIT: And like everyone else said, this would make it WAY too easy to get diamonds.
Diamonds are to be found, not made.
