I've been trying to get back into texturing, and I realized I'm still being discouraged by the same thing that made me take a break: smooth textures. Stuff like snow, stone, sandstone top, and stuff like that give me a bunch of trouble because I can't think of a way to make them imperfect without looking like noise.

Does anyone have any tips on that?
Use a semi soft-edged brush larger than one pixel for most of your brush work.

Well, I suppose you could try a different style, maybe make it less default. Like, my stone that I made for the Alpha Pack Challenge was more rocky than anything else (bottom left of picture):

What resolution are you working with? Some textures can get away with being primarily noise, but sand and stone can have all sorts of little details to it.

You could always try taking a normal (rough) texture and bringing the contrast way down. Kinda depends on how many colors you have available to use, though.
Quick question to anyone familiar with the block/item model format... is there a setting somewhere that lets you "turn off" lighting on a cube, i.e. make it ignore the light level it's in and appear at it's actual brightness all the time?

As I'm not familiar with the exact workings of the Block/Item Model Format, but I'm pretty sure you can't have an block/item model ignore the light level on the block.
Hey, has anyone posted about this yet? Paril101 (the guy that made the MCSkin3D) is working on a free block model editing program. Free in full and open source, unlike some editors.

Hey, I have set up a server for TAU members/non-members. Nobody not coming from this thread will ever join it. It's creative and you can build whatever. If you ask I will op you. Do whatever.
Could anyone possibly take a look at my pack and tell me what I'm doing wrong? When I try to load it in the latest snapshot (a or as a folder, I get a sea of broken texture placeholders. When I try to load it as a .zip file, Minecraft doesn't even recognise that I've selected it, and puts me back on default.
Running Minecraft straight off of the Mojang launcher.
Is anyone else still having this problem with the b snapshot?
(the weird 'shadow' overlay on all plants and tall grass)
Alignment issues seem to be fixed, as do the water glitch issues but this one is still here.
The shadow overlay is due to the fact that "planes" were removed. Now they are simply cubes with most of the faces invisible. This means that they are automatically shaded just like the other block sides in the game. It's a really horrible effect, and I hope they fix it.

Models: You said previously that you didn't do anything with it, so delete the models folder. Also, the shaders folder too if you haven't edited those. Don't include ANYTHING you haven't changed, because it just adds bloat and can cause problems in the future.
The crashing- the dev log says the zip is malformed. I don't know why this is, I tested the integrity on my system and it said OK, but I unarchived it and re-zipped it and the pack now works. Try zipping with different settings and see if that fixes it?

It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

Oh, I forgot I had those folders in there. I wound up completely unpacking the .jar and starting from scratch from the base pack to see if that fixed it. It did not.
Though, now it is working, so thanks for pointing that out. It still steadfastly refuses to acknowledge the new .zip file, but that may be a problem with the snapshot.
Yay, I can work on the new mobs!
Edit: Oh god, now that I can see the new thing with the leaves in person, I want to cry. It has murdered my textures.
All planks are done. I'm quite happy with the turn out.
I've been here for a loooooooooong time.

I'm not sure how this will impede vision through the panes though and whether it will prove to be a hassle if I choose to change the panes texture.
Looks awesome. Is there a tutorial out there that you are following with these?
