Hi, so I have the demo version of minecraft and am thinking about getting the premium version today, but my computer only has 2 gigs of RAM and with the demo only gets about 6-8 FPS. I have tried turning a lot of graphics down but to no effect. I was wondering, how should I go about reducing lag? I also don't have much money so I can't really buy anything :/
With only 2 GB of system RAM you will definitely want to allocate less memory (which goes against most advice to reduce lag, but with no factual basis); the default is 1 GB (effectively more as Java uses more than this), which leaves little free RAM for the OS and other programs and results in disk thrashing. Assuming you are using the launcher (I believe the demo is now only played through the launcher; it was online when I played it in 1.5.1), you can do this by clicking edit profile and near the bottom of the window that comes up chuck JVM arguments and enter -Xms512M -Xmx512M, like this:
However, I have no idea if you can even do this without a full account, including playing a different version, which would enable you to try out Optifine, a mod designed to improve performance (even if it were updated to the current version you'd have to copy the version files and tell the launcher to use the copy, as shown here).

So I got minecraft, and you're saying *if* optifine was updated after I did this! I wouldn't be able to installs optifine?

Can you edit your profile and select a different version? Sorry, I have no idea at all what the demo allows/doesn't allow (as I only played it online, but it is now played through the launcher), but if you can do that then you can rename and mod the jar and select it as the version to use. Also, exactly what version is the demo (the Wiki hardly says anything about it)? I believe it is an older version, for which Optifine will have definitely been updated for (currently in testing for 1.7.9, stable for 1.7.4; it is one of the first mods to update to newer versions).

I am not in the demo version anymore. Sorry I should have mentioned that.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
So I've heard....
