Well, Initially the idea was pointing to whatever mob is closest to you until that mob is killed.
But of course... there's been flaws to the idea.... and... it's sort of evolved into many things.
I've come to the conclusion virtually everyone hates the idea anyway.. so I don't really care. Only one who through a like or neutral opinion to the idea was Greg. So.. yeah.

It has been said already but, the core purpose of the compass is to show you your spawn point. But the idea of an item showing you the area or direction of which mobs are, sort of ruins the experience of the game in my opinion. I don't really see this idea coming to fruition.

I have no issue with needing a compass to make a map, that seems logical. The item I see as being pointless is the clock. Unless someone can see a good use for it that hasn't occurred to me. I just think, well, if I want to know what time of day it is, look up! Also, can clocks be mounted in frames like other items? Never actually tried it but would be nice to have a clock on the wall!

Yeah they can be put in an item frame. It's pretty cool actually because they still work too :).
But.. Yeah generally speaking I kinda agree about the clock.. Kinda a waste of gold.

Unless you are underground delving/mining and can't see the sky, and want to know if it would be worthwhile to head back to the surface now or continue on delving/mining a bit longer.

That's irrelevant to me since I mine til I feel like stopping regardless if it's night or day.
Only thing I think is useful for gold is just power rail. Or gold blocks for decoration.

On PC the Mini Map Mods have the option of showing you all the mobs around you. It does not lessen the experience at all.
That being said, Instead of it being something the compass does, it would make more sense to be a Map function. Unfortunately at this point in the version of MC the consoles have, Mob Heads are only available in Creative mode. Once they add the Fireworks item, Skeleton heads should start to have a VERY small chance of dropping. in which case having the Recipe Map+Skeleton head = Upgraded map with ability to show hostile mobs, would be a good idea.
and yes the Clocks recipe should change to something else, but Gold isn't really used for much hence the recipe requiring gold. Just pretend your crafting a Rolex or something.

It would be useless if you were mining as unless you can hear them you dont know whether they are up or down as compass will not show that. Good idea i suppose for out in the open
Well... even though it apparently points to where you're spawn is... But a huge majority of the time... I never use it. I don't need something to point to where I spawned because I already know where that is. By remembering where I need to go and if I'm REALLY lost.. fine I'll look at a map.
But what I thoguht of having a use for it is... (which in the end due to the general consensus is that we need a 'mob detector') is more of a mob detector. I still think the compass could be used for that... But.. whatever.
However... Perhaps... I could come up with a way to please both sides is being able to Enchant the Compass to give the ability to do that, as well as have just the normal compass. Just throwing it out there

If only I could aim.
That's fair.
