This is something I think could work:
Make an item that detects only one type of monster, say an Enderman or some other sort of important monster. It would follow the direction of the most recently interacted with Enderman, but would lose its 'connection' after being so many blocks away.

I doubt we'll see much progression in the Console at all. 4J really likes to take their time with stuff. I think they could Rival Valve with their time.
I've never used a compass to navigate really.. I've tried and they don't seem to have any purpose to do so. . I've never seen the purpose of it. I always go by using a map and memory of where I need to go. Or I make waypoint towers for special points (In forest areas, etc).
You're right about the redstone part, and to a lesser extent Iron. But I'd rather a map be made from a piece of paper and 8 ink sacks.
I lose my map a lot.. But it's never intentionally. I don't just go up to a lava pit and throw it in. But there are some in game issues, such as the many reasons that minecraft lags and fall into lava pits etc.
Since I don't play in my worlds very much, I'm relying on my friends' connections. So, I'd rather not suck up the iron that's supposed to be divided amongst the four of us.
And people who use buckets of lava to smelt stuff.. I don't know what they're thinking cause that's sort of a waste of iron I think. Unless you have absolutely nothing else, but even then I'd rather just chop down a tree and use planks.
Try it in a desert, on a plain, or at sea... where prominent landmarks are in short supply. The compass is used to precisely orient the map to the terrain, making it much easier to ascertain that the landmark you're looking at is the one you've pinpointed on your map. It's also used to set a bearing, making it much easier to maintain one's desired direction of travel and avoid walking around in circles and to triangulate your own position.
With iron golems in the game now... iron is a renewable resource.
Rather than mess with the purpose of compasses, why not just ask that a combat scanner be added into the game? If a scanner is added that you don't have to hold in your hand to use, you can have your sword or bow at the ready rather than messing with switching between the scanner and your weapon.

I think this conversation thread has already evolved to the idea of having a separate MOB scanner, but the general consensus so far is that you wouldn't have to hold it in your hand to use it, just have it in your hot bar, like the compass or the clock. Actually holding it in your hand may or may not allow you to access fine tuning settings to the MOB detector (ie. set for passive, neutral, hostile, or set for a specific MOB/MOBs).
Here's an idea to create a MOB detector...I like the idea of having it be for generic MOB's:
Instead of a recipe for the crafting table, how about just enchanting a compass on the enchanting table?
Level could impact maximum effective range. Level 30 = out to 130 blocks, Level 20 = out to 80 blocks, Level 10 = out to 30 blocks, Level 5 = out to 10 blocks.

I'm not particularly adverse to a combat scanneras a new item, although I personally would never bother using it. It's not like Minecraft is an FPS game. It is very rare that mobs spawn with such speed and in such proximity that a normally alert player has any real difficulty dispatching them - even in hard mode. (Note all the posts that suggest this game is way too easy in most cases.) If inserted... I just wonder why not go with the more standard game "enemy" display in the right lower corner and use a mode toggle to turn it on or off?

Why bother with a 'mode' to turn it on/off, just use the rule: if it is in your hot bar, the scanner HUD can be on, if in the inventory, it can be off.

I get that, but.. I gotta point out
1.) Being aware doesn't help if you can't hear for whatever reason (Deaf)
2.) I play with my sound off because I don't like the music, and I can't stand the noise animals make
3.) Even when I can hear the game in caves... it doesn't help with Creepers until you hear a hiss, and then boom.

Having a mob that can sneak up on you is sort of the point of the game having something called "creepers" in the game in the first place, isn't it?
SOOOOO... why do you seem so intent on taking the game out of the game?
I'm not??? I'm suggesting something that could be of great assistance.
I don't know have creepers be immune to the compass? This thing here could have huge reforms where it doesn't "take away the game" as you say. But just assist.
Maybe cost 30 levels to get it when enchanting a compass (I know you can't do it... but lets say that you can) and it would have a 1 in 3 chance of working.
There's tonnes of ways that this could be reformed to make it both challenging without "taking the game away from the game" and being an assistant tool.

Weren't you the one that suggested the GUI MOB Scanner in the lower right hand corner? Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black? I mean the original suggestion was to only point at the closest MOB, not have an on screen 'radar' type display to show you everything within your proximity....

Putting my comment in context - If you're going to have something other than looking around and listening to detect mobs just because there happens to be a silent, sneaky mob in the game, why make it as cumbersome as carrying an enchanted item in your hotbar? The whole purpose of this suggestion is to make the game easier, so why not go all the way, take all the fun out of it and use the vid game standard proximity display? (In other words, I was taking the suggestion farther over the top to make the point... A GUI scanner would seem really out of place in this game, wouldn't it?)
The reality is that the mobs in Minecraft do not come at you very quickly and aren't really all that deadly... and the game has many ways in which you can recover most of your items from a death already too. Keeping ponds of water around buildings gives you a ready retreat in order to stop creepers from even doing any damage. The original creators of the game programmed the creeper for stealth and then programmed a different set of ways in which the player can deal with them. To me, this game is more about dealing with mobs through strategic building than just detecting and taking them out hand to hand.
Seriously, I wouldn't want any sort of detector without an option to not use it or turn it off (which is why I inserted the toggle to my comment and, I believe, you were the one who queried about that). As I said, I'm not particularly adverse to the suggestion, but I would NEVER likely use it (and I suspect that if it is an item taking up hot bar space that there are many other players who would never bother with it either... we already have clocks that most people don't bother with and most people don't carry a compass unless they are intending to make a map in the nether or something like that.) Having the mobs sneak up on me from time to time is what provides most of the game's hilarious moments and is what makes the game fun.

If you aren't adverse about the suggestion... why were you making such a fuss to basically dismiss it and say it shouldn't be added?
Ps I'm not saying what you like about NOT having it isn't bad either. I'm really just trying to explore idea's that I think could be beneficial.
I can agree sort of... But I don't know how but I've been killed by creepers with a fullset of diamond armor before. So, I don't know.
And walked in lava for 2-3 seconds and burnt to death.
That's odd, I've literally swam in Lava while wearing un-enchanted Diamond Armor. I've also never been killed by a Creeper while wearing Diamond Armor, I wonder what's up with your game.
All in all though, a mob compass seems more like a convenience tool rather than a necessity. I don't oppose this idea by any means, but I also wouldn't be disappointed if it weren't added.

I'm not sure how anything would count as a 'necessity', once we are past the basic functionality of the game... aren't these all suggestions 'convienance' or 'desire' based at this point?
Anything further that is truly 'nescessary' should probably be reported as a bug/fix suggestion for something that is actually broken.

My idea would be it just points towards a mob that's closest to you until you kill it.
Or switch to another mob if it becomes closer.
