I'm surprised this post took off like this. Lol. Good to see all these ideas coming out from this.
I'm okay without certain other mobs like crabs etc. But it'd be interesting to have say sharks for sure. Things like sharks have the potential to make other items create-able.
Mostly items involving it's teeth. Things like the Shark Tooth Club featured on Deadliest Warrior used by the Maori.

In another post I was discussing a while back... We suggested putting villages or small ships underwater to spruce it up. Currently, the ocean has NO exploration value to it, so having reasons to go down to the bottom would add another element to the game. Really like the seaweed suggestions, but instead of vines, I would suggest that it behaves like sugar cane. Vines spread from block to block and would eventually cover the whole ocean floor, whereas a new seaweed would have to be planted (like sugar cane).

Agreed, looks like vines, grows like sugar cane, would be a water filled (source) block (instead of air filled like land plants), cannot grow above water surface (can't grow into an air block area, can only grow into another water block area).
Not a fan of adding this and adding another weapon, but could you use it for anything else also? lol
I saw in other post about adding better boats and couldn't help but think that would also help this topic for exploration. I'm not a fan of the current boats, and wish they had more design and durability. What do you guys think about adding a water (like jungle or desert) temple? Usually in the deepest part of the ocean, is partially flooded, and contains some buried treasure? Just throwing out a few more ideas

Lol yeah I was just kidding about the Harpoon thing for the most part.
I'd love the idea of a treasure chest.
Just have it be like either a fancy version of the chest.. or more like a broken thing with.. coral growing on it or soemthing.

Totally! Even if they don't add a temple... just having the chest be random spawning in a small building or something would be nice. Kinda like a blacksmith chest would be in the house.
For uses for the seaweed, people do eat it typically in soups or stews. Same goes for kelp which could be another form of ocean vegetation for the game. As for anything it does while in the water it could slightly slow down your swimming speed if you swim through it. There are some seaweeds in lakes where if it touches your skin it can give you a mild rash(speaking from experience).
If I remember right we are getting potatoes and carrots in the game sometime in the future. Add seaweed and fish, pork, beef, or chicken and you have soup.

Like both of your ideas! It makes sense to slow players down in the water and to have it be able to make a soup or something lol. I'm not a fan of the injuring, because I feel like slowing down already snail-speed swimming and then hurting you on top of it would just be a little overkill :/ I struggle enough drowning haha

Yeah good idea.
I did think of soup once myself. It'd be simple to make.. Especially stew now that they're adding carrots and potatoes. Just add beef and there ya go. Stew.

Maybe even a hint of sand.. So that way it camouflages in the ocean floor and it'd be... not the hardest to see but wouldn't be too easy too.
I think it'd be a good way to find music discs. Because... Finding music discs is something I did always find to be a chore. Only other way to get it is to have a skeleton kill a creeper with an arrow, or in chests in dungeons etc.
Music discs... Maybe like.... 6-15 diamond, all in stacks of 1-2, some gold nuggets in the same manner, and an enchanted piece of armor with some random magic properties or something along those lines. It'd make the chest look very 'packed' with goodies, without having to have the sheer number of stuff be OP

With emerald and quartz being added, you could replace some of the diamonds with emerald and have some of the structures built out of sandstone, glass, and quartz in construction (for the water temple idea above).
support i would love my under water base to feel like its under water having fish swim by and having see weed out side of my windows would feel so nice

i think we should all use common sense and logic when we answer and ask a question but always stay open minded
just cause science fails to explain something does not mean its real (afterlife, big foot, ghosts etc..) does not mean its fake try to stay opened mined instead of closed

Well, if it were to look like vines... and sort of behave like vines at least moderately... then yeah I would imagine they would slow you down.. because they do slow you down in the jungles. So it only makes sense to have it act the same in water the same it does on land in my opinion.

That could absolutely work. If the treasure chest were to be implemented in this... "ocean update" lol.... then it could have everything you mentioned above.
For the sake of... whatever... I'd say 2-5 chests in each world... depending on how much water in each seed there is.

I agree. With that whole "air" pocket thing that Greg was also mentioning... I would like to see things like... Fences, glass panes, and other thinner items have a "water pocket" added to them when placed underwater. That way if you do build things.. it doesn't have that look like it's "flowing" off your base like a bucket of water on the surface. But... who knows how well that could work.

I might have been unclear... sorry. I wasn't agreeing with slowing the players down completely, because normal seaweed would be difficult to swim through. Someone posted that it should injure the player and slow them down and that was what I was disagreeing with. I agree on the fact that they should behave like vines and slow players.

Oh I see. Well.. I wouldn't be entirely opposed to it hurting you. I mean.. It's not like anything is going to hurt you down there anyway... So why not add an additional challenge aspect to the waters. Far as I know only thing that'll hurt you down there now... is just drowning.

Instead of hurting you... I like the idea of pulling you down while slowing you should you move through it (climb downward/in the opposite direction of vines)... that way, it isn't technically the seaweed that is hurting you... it is the danger of getting entangled and ultimately drowning.
I didn't say the seaweed hurts you I just mentioned that some seaweeds can give you an itchy rash in real life. I know this cause I have experienced it first hand. I don't know the species of seaweed that does this but I know it exists in fresh water. But I suppose a rash would be a hard thing to implement so forget about it.

You could be onto something though! Maybe not necessarily a rash, but maybe a sickness like eating rotten flesh can do. Just food for thought lol

Yeah I know.
It's like looking into the waters of the oceans freshly after the mass extinctions of this world that almost made this planet desolate.

Fish and Seaweed could be "sushi".
