This would be interesting. Sure it has been done before, but what would make it even better is if you had a redstone setup and covered it with something like Glowstone Light blocks or Jack-o-Lanterns so that you can pretty much turn on mobs whenever you feel like it... Im not sure if it would light the whole map up.. but in order to block the sun, you'd have to do not only the ceiling, but also the four walls, and that would take a very long time. even in creative. I mean you have to do 100+ layers per wall, then like a layer of 450 or whatever the X value limit is..
It's been done before, and they've determined that render distance makes doing this rather useless. The game only loads a set number of chunks at once, and so anywhere that's unloaded will show the open, lit up sky.

Using lights like that wouldn't work, for the light only emanates a short radius. This would only be possible with the light block idea I suggested on the exclusives suggestions thread, which would act as a placeable sun.
This is actually a really interesting idea, because this isn't really possible to do on the PC edition (without MCEdit or other modifications) because the world keeps on going. If I calculated correctly, that would be 1,048,576 blocks in total, or 16,384 stacks of blocks, or about 303.407 double chests full of stacks of blocks.
Good luck.

Funny guy, I already started this in my world and intend to do this to my second large-scale adventure map.
Swiftness II potions and YouTube will be your friends here.
I've been working on a secret challenge survival map with the walls/skies filled out with bedrock.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.
I tried to simply blow up the entire floor of a superflat world.. so when I built a skyblock I could get animals to spawn in the very limited dirt given in skyblock....
I got basically a one block high (+) PLUS sign from the middle of the map to the edges... in TNT .. and I gave up... Super Duper Boring..

Check it out for awesome tutorials and constant content!
So I went about testing this.
Edge walls don't go, so there's a 963x963 grid to be filled, which totals an inhuman 927,369 blocks (14,490 stacks).
One line with Swiftness II (4:00) takes about 2:30 to complete, which yields 24 lines an hour.
Completing this alone at a non-stop rate would take a little over 40 straight hours of playing....

Would you really need to fill in the entire ceiling? The sun and moon follow a linear path. Wouldn't it just be a matter of blocking out that path?
Personally, if you're gonna do this, you should make a huge redstone skylight. That way you can have daylight whenever you want... to let in the light.
I've never tried potions so I don't know what they do, i'm assuming you can move quicker going by your post? Will they work in creative mode?
Yes, Swiftness II (4:00) is a major blessing...so is a hair tie for holding down the trigger.
May the god of your choice help you if you don't use potions....
I have actually done this with friends. we only did about 1/5 to 1/4 of the map and we called it the shadowlands. was entertaining having mobs there all the time. we did this before the experience update though. Doesnt seem so bad when you go it with a group.

Oh, how I wish I knew that feeling right now....

I got about 5 rows from one end of the world to the other and it was extremely boring. So I stopped.

Are you using potions?
That's almost 1.5x how long my estimates came out as, and I did mine more than once.

Really depends on how much you like fighting mobs...
