While I would love to see free DLC, it probably won't happen. I am okay with paid DLC as long as the price is reflective of the content. One thing that is bothering me, though, is that people are insinuating that 4J employees would be "working for free" by creating free content. This is absolutely ridiculous. Studio employees will get paid regardless of whether or not DLC will be free. Minecraft XBL has sold over 1 million copies already. That is roughly $20 million dollars in revenue. They are not forgoing their pay or "working for free" by making DLC that is free.
End rant.

Yes, but that is not profit, there was alot of hours and money that went into creating the game. All that money had to pay for all of that, plus future updates which are free, plus your overhead to keep electricity, running water, building rental... I could go on, but the fact of the matter is just because they made a good chunk of money off of the games release doesn't mean they can coast the rest of their lives off of it.
Yes employees would get paid for their time doing "free stuff", but the company would not, and if the company does not get paid, jobs don't last, then the employees don't get paid
I will give them no such critisim, and I'm both a PC player and an Xbox 360 player.
Things like skins, texture packs, and mods are free on the PC because they are made by regular people in the community. Those people have other ways of making money, ie, AdFly and asking for donations. On the Xbox version, it's a studio of people whose job it is to do this stuff. They need to get paid because it's their livelyhood. The people who do it for the PC do it as a hobby or something fun. It's 4Js job. Also, it's Microsoft. Everyone playing Minecraft should feel like the luckiest people in the world that we got updates full of tons of content for free. So I have no problem paying for DLC because it rewards their hard work.

I never said they could coast through the rest of their lives off of it. I understand that a good amount of money had to be used for development, but this also doesn't take into account the fact that Minecraft is not their only project. They have other games that they continue to make money off of. It is not as though they are trying to survive forever on one $20 million return. They are also consistently making money off of Minecraft. People still purchase it. I'm not saying that I know the ins and outs of 4J's finances, but I highly doubt that making a few free DLCs would break the bank.

They could always inlude a few 'trial features' in all their DLC so that everyone can enjoy a few freebies but they'd still get a lot of revenue off of people purchasing full packs. Maybe.
Lol! Why would they make it free when they have to work to make it
Stupid to say that it should be free
what? WHAT? since minecraft came out in pc EVERYTHING is free, i would NEVER and i mean NEVER pay a single cent more to MS, look at their list:
Xbox Gold Membership: 12 euro/dollar
Games: 50+ euro/dollar
Games content: 10,20,30,40 and even 50 euro/dollar
Videos: 20+ euro/dollar
Avatar items: 5+ euro/dollar

That's because all the skins and texture packs were user-created content as a hobby, as was said before.. Anything we get on the Xbox would be created by 4J and tested by Microsoft, there's a lot of jobs there that have to be paid for.
Here's the problem with the skins should be free theory, someone has to make these skins for the 360 version. Someone will have to code at a desk for a decent amount of time, someone will have to WORK to get these skins ready for the 360 version. Someone will have to be paid for that effort, and I know most people (myself included) don't like to work for free. I have bills to pay and mouths to feed, and it is quite difficult to do on a salary of $0.
Just food for thought, everything that is necessary for you to play the game will be free (updates). If you want to customize your character then you'll just have to fork out the money. Welcome to the real world people.
But 4j/M$ had already got 40 million dollars off of minecraft. If I pay 1600 msp for an arcade game I shouldn't have to pay for DLC too.
I think that having paid DLC is stupid, the PC minecraft had no DLC, and now 4J is getting greedy? Screw them. Please scrap the "DLC" area in the menu. Or else. You will become.. EA and Gameloft, EA being much worse.

Why not? you paid for the game because people spent time making it as their job. People also make DLC as part of their job, it takes further time and effort that they wouldn't be able to spend making money at another job, so why shouldn't they get compensated for their work? I'm sure they love what they do, but this isn't something they're doing as a hobby.

Yeah the PC did have DLC, but it was all user made by hobbyists, which is why it was free.

They didn't make the game, they ported it, and I'm pretty sure they can take out some of that money out of the 40 million to pay the people making the DLC.

It probably wouldn't break the bank.. however the company exists to make money, not break even. No one in the history of man has ever made a company to not make money. If you don't want to pay for the skins, you don't have to. It is not taking away from the game in anyway by not having a skin.

Let me ask you this... have you ever bought DLC? for say COD? Most people have, spend 60 bucks on a half finished games with more bugs and glitches to shake a stick at, then fork out another 100 bucks in maps for the same game, just in different settings.
Like I said above, someone has to create all of these skins, someone has to get paid for it. Someone at Microsoft has to get paid to make sure it can make it to your console. I believe 4J has even stated there will be trial version for the skin packs so you can try a few and decide if you want to buy it or not, so you will get a few free skins. They didn't make the game, they ported it, and I'm pretty sure they can take out some of that money out of the 40 million to pay the people making the DLC.
They didn't just port it, they rewrote it into an entirely different programming language. Java to C++. They put in the same amount of effort porting it as it would have taken to make a new game from scratch.
And they could, or they could continue generating more revenue, because this is peoples' JOBS. Breaking even = a bunch of developers spent months of their lives working for nothing and not making any income for food or lodging. It also means that there won't be support for more updates and DLC after that. In fact, there won't be support for the core game if they do that, and minecraft will rot and decay on the Xbox, and then we all lose.

They already are making money. Quite a bit of it, in fact. They could potentially make MORE money from selling DLC, but to say that they would only break even without paid DLC is not true. This has nothing to do with whether or not I want to pay for skins. My original post was only pointing out that claiming that developers would be working for free is an untruthful claim.

So far, every add-on on the Minecraft world, be it updates, skins, mods, etc. Are all free. If you guys decide to put out DLCs. Almost every Minecraft gamer will give you guys criticism for paid practices (no matter how cheap it is).
Minecraft is all about being free except, obviously, for the game itself. Minecraft is supposed to have the feeling of "free". Minecraft is in the spirit of being free. Sure, you can argue that multiplayer servers have hosts that charges money to its players, but those "charges" are not made by official game developers but by gamers themselves.
My best advice. Make the DLCs absolutely worth its price and so far.. Skin DLCs? Please... 4J, you're better than that. Everyone practically knows that it is easy to develop a free alternate way if you guys chose to do so.
Dont get me wrong, I love you guys. However, I know that there is absolutely no moral compass when extra money is in the equation. I might get banned for saying this..
4j Studios... dont be pathetic...
The truth is people will never be satisfied with what they're given and will always try to get more. Let's be honest we paid $20 for a game that is arguably better than a lot of $60 games and even monthly subscription games so I don't think it's really wrong for them to charge a few Microsoft Points for extra content.
I feel people are expecting way too much and complaining more than they should in this situation but maybe it's just me. However when you look around you see people who are angry about not having dedicated servers or other various features that they feel they're entitled to. I guess they don't realize all of this costs 4J money which is of course going to be passed along to the customer.
Developers don't work for free and Servers aren't cheap so if we want all these cool features we shouldn't condemn them for trying to make money. The game has been out for almost 2 months and is still under loads of development so give it time. DLC isn't as important as getting caught up to speed with the PC right now.
don't make me laugh microsoft will make money of it anyway
You make it sound like Microsoft is some evil entity that wants to harm it's consumers when in fact they're one of the key companies that have led to numerous advancements in technology. If they're making a living off of their own ideas then who are we to judge them for it?

Actually the game turned a profit on the very first day......just so you know,
I I never expected any DLC to be free and will never expect DLC to be free. I never work for free (unless you count the yardwork the wife has me do) and will never work for free (unless Im helping a friend or relative, even then I may not work for free).
End rant.
