Since the TU14 update, I've been attempting to expand the existing village in my world. I built a wall around it and built many more buildings within it. The only problem is that some of the villagers seem to be randomly dying - I have read on other forum posts that "villagers don't just die, and it was probably a siege" but I have seen the villagers dying myself. They'll just be standing somewhere in the village and start flashing red and making the dying noise, with no enemies round. Also, it seems like the only ones that die are the newer ones, not the originals. I can't get more than 2 priests or librarians at one time because the newest one always dies shortly after, and I'm left with the original one. The only profession that doesn't seem to die is blacksmith; I have like 6 of them. Anyone have any idea of what's going on here?
I can confirm that you are correct villagers are just dying, I've tried to repopulate but they just die on me. This is very annoying as the people on my server want to trade but no villages equals no trading.
Do zombie spawners, spawn zombie villagers? I've been at my zombie farm for a couple hours and I haven't seen one yet. Can't wait for the update for zombies to drop potatoes and carrots
I can also confirm that villagers are taking random damage. It seems as though it may be the "suffocation" issue that has been reported in the TU14(1.04) patch bug list. The damage always occurs when the villagers are next to building walls. I have also noticed that they are able to stand on the lower portion of doors now (door is closed, the villager appears half in and half out of the dwelling, but standing on the lower half of the door). This is obviously a bug, hopefully the same one mentioned where mobs are able to stand on fences right now. Only when 1.05 comes out will I be able to tell for sure, as that is supposed to be fixed in the 1.05 update.

Seems to me I have read that there is a probability that zombies will spawn as zombie villagers. I can only verify that I have seen zombie villagers in areas away from villages. However, this would be a natural spawn, as opposed to a spawner, so not sure if that "probability" is affected differently with a spawner.
Mmm I've seen zombie villagers out and about above ground and in caves.
I've read somewhere that there's about a 5% chance of getting one from a spawner.
So I hollowed out a section near my farm wired it with Redstone for a quarantine bay, ready to filter out zombie villagers.
After mowing at least 1000 zombies down, still never saw one.
Oh well, old fashion villager breeding is what I'll have to stick to.
Side question.
Are villagers similar to sheep in the way they breed?
Such as breeding, certain colour sheep will produce a certain colour baby.
Is this the same for villagers with their professions?
I'm trying to get myself blacksmiths and priests, but they only breed me butchers, farmers and librarians -.-

I haven't read anything on this, but in my experience as my current village was down to just three farmers and they have bred a butcher, priest, and a librarian I would say that it is more likely just some percentage of a chance, likely weighted in some fashion for certain occupations. Interesting question though, wonder if there is anything written on it somewhere...
Since I posted that last post, they've bred me a couple of priests.
I had a baby blacksmith but when I returned to collect him as an adult, he was gone :/
I think he must have suffocated in a wall somehow. Hopefully the next update will stop that.
As well as villagers going invisible while travelling in a mine cart.
You should keep some to breed.
