Please help. I got my daughter a Toshiba satellite laptop and she plays minecraft 1.6.2 on it. She's built massive worlds and I had to learn how to install mods, as she now has 34. I downloaded windows 8.1 update the other day and now her minecraft is wrecked.
First, she tried playing and it crashed on startup. The error log pointed to Pam's Wee Flowers mod, which we removed. It immediately crashed on startup the next time, error log said Flower Craft, so we removed that. Now it says Bibliocraft is causing the crash, and we aren't going to remove that. Too much of her stuff in her worlds was built using Bibliocraft. Funny thing is, her aether mod with bibliocraft still works fine.
I went to a computer repair store and the guy told me he had no idea what I was talking about. I'll post the error message. I would appreciate it SO MUCH if someone could help me. My kid is 7 and she can't even open minecraft anymore. I need to resolve this without her losing any of her worlds or their content.

looks like something happened to her configuration files causing a formatting error. instead of disabling the mods, back up the current 'config' folder to another location like the desktop(just in case), now delete the 'config' folder from her .minecraft folder. rerun minecraft. you May get id conflicts from that, but if she put all the mods in there to begin with, she should know how to deal with that. you should even try putting pams and flowers back in the mods folder before trying. if they worked before they should work again.
I really appreciate the help. Shes only 7, so she doesnt know what to do about id mismatches. Neither do i. It was hard enough for me to learn the mods lol. What do we do about id mismatches?
I removed the config files and minecraft now works. But when we load her worlds, it says a bunch of things are missing. Is there a way to get them back?
Yep. The mods all work now. But if i open one of her worlds, it says some ids are missing and then when i load the world, the old mod items are gone. Do i need to put the config files back in?

Yes, they will say IDs are missing or mismatched on starting the world.
The old mod items are missing? Does this mean that the items in the inventory are gone?
An easy way to check if your mods are still there is to access the main menu and go to mods.
Another way, if you enabled cheats on that world, is to hop onto creative and check your creative inventory. If the items in the inventory and hotbar simply disappeared, and the items are in the creative inventory, it could be because you removed those mods and (attempted) to start Minecraft.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
The more things change, the more they seem to stay the damn same.
I've stopped playing Minecraft years ago, but I'm still around to offer technical support.
If you're still reading this, have a wonderful day!
no it should have generated a new config already when you put the mods back in. unfortunately, when you loaded it past the screen that said "blah blah blah is missing do you wish to continue" you erased some blocks placed in the world. they will have stopped existing. (she could always cheat them back in). but do you mean to say that a few items that were placed in the world are no longer there? or that ALL the modded items were gone. nothing about erasing the config folder and regenerating it would have caused any loss of world items, but i suppose its possible that the save files themselves were altered by your upgrade.
on a side note, the whole thing is pretty weird because the original thing i quoted, "Unknown character ' ' in 'C:/Users/Chastity/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/config/BiblioCraft.cfg:1"
Actually says there is an extra blank space character ' ' in the config file causing it to not read correctly. I guess its possible that updating to win8 did it, and hey, im taking your word for it, but this type of error is more frequently a typo than a system failure. its a weird thing indeed though, ill be interested to see if there are more reports like this when more ppl move to win8.
modpacks are never as stable as vanilla (regular) minecraft, and even in regular minecraft we lose items sometimes when there are updates, glitches, etc. so even at seven, thats a fact of life with this game that she'll have to learn. luckily, we have a great community to help us through it
All the new mod items and the mod themselves are fine when i remove the config files. But when i open her worlds like that, it says ids are mismatched and any mod items she previously placed are removed.
If i put the config files back in, it crashes again.

I appreciated your help until that point. "She'll have to learn..."
If removing the config files makes all those id mismatches, and when i load the world anyway it erases items, then your "fix" was not a fix at all. I was attempting to save her effort. Not start over.
removing the configs did not alter the blocks in the world in any way. as kafka suggested, it is possible when you attempted to load it and continued past that point (previous to our help) you created an id mismatch. i have done nothing but attempt to help you in the most reasonable way. please direct your anger elsewhere and have a good day.
After removing the configs as you instructed, EVERY world says there are id mismatches. If i put the configs back in, the game crashes. If i advance past without the configs, it erases her mod items. If deleting the configs causes mismatches, how am i supposed to ever enter those worlds again without deleting things? Most worlds still remain intact. But i have to go past the id mismatch message to open them - which in turn erases the modded items.
And before your last message i was telling my wife how you were one of the last decent people on the net. But your insinuation that me or my kid somehow screwed it up followed by being told that my kid's gotta learn, well, it wasn't what i wanted to hear. I wouldnt presume to tell someone what their kid's gotta learn. Ever. And that is certainly not something i came here to be told. When your kid loses something he/she values, i wont say "lesson learned." Ill say "sorry."
I do not believe there is a possible solution to those errors. And this is the reason why I keep my save files on an external hard drive, preserving them just in case.
If you want to try this mod that may resolve ID errors, etc, etc, go here (Note that this may not solve your problem):
I have all her saves backed up on a flash drive. But apparently, i needed to back up the configuration files as well? Without the config files im basically screwed?
Hmm... I have an experiment you can perform. Copy one of your modded save files on your flash drive and paste it into the saves folder so that you still have the backup on your flash drive because you copied it. Delete the old world if it's screwed up. Run Minecraft again WITH the configuration files. If it crashes again, let me know.
First, she tried playing and it crashed on startup. The error log pointed to Pam's Wee Flowers mod, which we removed. It immediately crashed on startup the next time, error log said Flower Craft, so we removed that. Now it says Bibliocraft is causing the crash, and we aren't going to remove that. looks like something happened to her configuration files causing a formatting error. instead of disabling the mods, back up the current 'config' folder to another location like the desktop(just in case), now delete the 'config' folder from her .minecraft folder. rerun minecraft. you May get id conflicts from that, but if she put all the mods in there to begin with, she should know how to deal with that. you should even try putting pams and flowers back in the mods folder before trying. if they worked before they should work again.
If the items in the inventory and hotbar simply disappeared, and the items are in the creative inventory, it could be because you removed those mods and (attempted) to start Minecraft.
on a side note, the whole thing is pretty weird because the original thing i quoted, "Unknown character ' ' in 'C:/Users/Chastity/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/config/BiblioCraft.cfg:1"
Actually says there is an extra blank space character ' ' in the config file causing it to not read correctly. I guess its possible that updating to win8 did it, and hey, im taking your word for it, but this type of error is more frequently a typo than a system failure. its a weird thing indeed though, ill be interested to see if there are more reports like this when more ppl move to win8.
modpacks are never as stable as vanilla (regular) minecraft, and even in regular minecraft we lose items sometimes when there are updates, glitches, etc. so even at seven, thats a fact of life with this game that she'll have to learn. luckily, we have a great community to help us through it
If i put the config files back in, it crashes again.
If removing the config files makes all those id mismatches, and when i load the world anyway it erases items, then your "fix" was not a fix at all. I was attempting to save her effort. Not start over.
If you want to try this mod that may resolve ID errors, etc, etc, go here (Note that this may not solve your problem):

*And now I return to the mysterious cave where I once emerged* XD
I may have a solution for your problem.
