I hope you can help me with the issue I'm having. I've searched the internet, but I get all the same inexperienced answers that don't apply to me personally in every related topic.
I'm getting the error 'Can't resolve hostname' on one of the servers I'm attempting to connect to. I've been on this server before, and it had been in my list of servers without me having changed it at all before I re-entered it as an attempted fix, so I know I've typed the IP correctly. I can get on other servers, so I'm certain that my internet connection isn't what's causing the error to occur. I've been in contact with other friends who play on this server, and they are able to connect and log on with no trouble, so it's not the server being down or having technical difficulties. I've tried entering the numeric IP address rather than the '.com' address, but it no longer works, and hasn't for quite some time due to being cut-off as a method of connecting.
I've tried all the basic fixes, from deleting the server from my list and re-entering the IP, to closing out of the MineCraft client and re-entering. I've tried restarting my computer and restarting my router.
I hope someone can help; I've had this issue before, and never managed to resolve it, with another server, and it's become quite frustrating.

Unfortunately resolving hostnames can be caused by almost anything.
To check if the server is currently active, you could try telnet'ing to the IP/DOMAIN and port to see if it will accept a connection. Alternatively if there is a routing problem from your location, you should try and run a traceroute to both the direct IP and the hostname.
It could also be worth doing a DNS lookup for the domain which you are trying to connect to, if the DNS entry doesn't match the direct IP you have, then there could be a problem where you are reading a corrupt record maybe? You could try setting your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS) to see if that helps resolve the problem.
I have this same issue, and I've tried the dns lookup, but being incredibly noob I have no idea what it meant, and I've tried changing my dns, but that failed, and the server is confirmed online. any chance someone can help a noob out?

I don't understand it either, I am having the same problem...

Try connecting to the IP address that the lookup says it resolves to. I've had this issue with people not being able to connect to our server after we switched hosts. The issue is some DNS servers with a high TTL caching DNS responses for a way long time; and people could be trying to make connections to nonexistant machines for days or weeks.

Yes, but the servers I am trying to connect to have been up for a long time.
I have a server in my basement running all the time. My Minecraft server is suppose to use minecraft.snakehult.se
It works for me, as I'm connecting from the same network, but my friends get "Can't resolve host name".
So I had to give them the IP (then one you get if you do a DNS lookup)
But I really don't want to give out numbers; it feels kind of unprofessional if you know what I mean.
Everything is ported; as I said they can connect with 90.xxx.xxx.xxx:25565 (port not needed with Minecraft, I know)
Firewall should not be a problem, cause it don't care about witch program (javaw.exe) to allow through.
But here is might something worth to know:
If I ping the DNS from MY computer I'll always return true (if I don't shut down the server, obviously)
But from Ping.eu I get:
--- minecraft.snakehult.se ping statistics ---
packets transmitted 9
received 0
packet loss 100 %
time 8055 ms
It's a 100% packet loss. And that confirms that my friends can't connect.
The question is why.

I had my IP, I just wanted my friends to connect via "minecraft.snakehult.se"
That's the thing with DNS.
But it didn't work, probably because my server wasn't setup right. I had some crashes and may needed to reregister.
I've now switch server host that I pay ~10 bucks for (idk about the currency convert).
Still same host name, but located on a real server.
It's worth paying if you don't know how to do server stuff yourself.
And now days a small server is best hosted with Realms!

However, the DNS lookup worked! I wish I'd thought of it sooner. Thank you very much for your help, I greatly appreciate it~

If you're looking for a Minecraft server host, I couldn't recommend anyone better than FPSBox. 15% off for life promo: MINECRAFT

So? That doesn't mean they can't change machines, does it?

For me, it was a screwy DNS, so this gave me the true IP. Hope this helps!
