So would 4GB Ram help me get more frames on minecraft? I usualy get 40fps that hops around. I don't like it, so would 8GB of ram (total) improve my frames?
Thanks!
Edit: I was thinking about getting some ram off of Amazon.
Edit 2: Also, if more Ram doesn't help, what will? I want at least a non-jumpy 60fps that I can play with around Normal Render Distance, and possibly Fancy graphics.

My opinion is no it will not. You're posting this in the unmodded client forum so I'm assuming that you're not a heavy modder. If you're running a ton of big mods and using an HD texture pack then more than 4 GB could possibly help, but otherwise vanilla minecraft doesn't use more than 1GB of RAM.
If you're talking about performance in 1.5, it currently has the worst FPS of any build yet. Mostly due to their efforts to improve the lighting engine is what I hear. The current version is pretty resource heavy and they are struggling with how to make it less so. Reducing the smooth lighting setting may help quite a bit and turning it all the way off will really make your FPS jump from all reports I've heard.

Thanks for the reply, although as Java is recourse heavy, I believe that 8GB should insanely boost my FPS, with no mods, clean MC, I still get lag full screen. (1920x1080)

I didn't test yet in 1.5 but in 1.4.7 I was running minecraft at around 120 fps with periods when things were loading it dropping down to about 60 fps. I have 4 GB of RAM, 3.4 i-7, GTX470. Not a huge different from your specs, probably the processor is the biggest difference. I really recommend you go through the guide. You might also do some general maintenance on your install; defrag your harddrive and run a registry cleaner (like ccleaner). I really recommend going through that guide point by point. Reducing other programs that are running or using a program like gamebooster to minimize the number of unnecessary processes running in the background while playing may help quite a bit too. Over time many people get so many things running in the background they don't realize how many resources total they are eating.

I'm using CCleaner, I've tried everything in the guide before-hand. I'm just saying but, it still seems more ram would help. Because of how recourse heavy Minecraft/Java is, more ram would allow Java to eat up more resources, thus causing the game to lag less.
Edit: I also appreciate your help with this. But once again, what should I upgrade in-order to increase my FPS, that guide isn't something that will help. I've tried all of those things before.

Probably what would help much more than RAM would be installing an actual video card. If I'm not mistaken ATI Radeon HD 4200 is the integrated graphics. This would free up the processor from handling some things related to graphics. I'm not saying it will make a huge difference, but it certainly could net you perhaps 10 or more fps I'm guessing, depending on the card you get and what kind of card your motherboard can support. Just make sure your power supply can handle the extra load.
The Radeon 4200 will be discrete but a really poor one not designed for gaming, upgrading it to something like a more recent HD 6670 Graphics card will increase the performance a fair amount though your CPU will start to limit the performance, but upgrading the graphics card will definitely help.
Hey. Thanks. But honestly, what does a graphics card have to do with Minecraft? It seems that my graphics card is over the standard. I still feel in more ram.

Although, from research I have done, it looks like 8GB of ram would increase my fps by 20-30. And, ram is dirt-cheap. 4GB of ram is about $30-35$. Maybe $40 max. From what I've seen, graphics cards are for a good one, over $100. I'd rather buy something cheap that would boost my performance more over what costs $100+ and only gives me 10 frames.
More RAM wont do anything for performance, its only like getting a bigger hard drive, getting a graphics card that can process the game faster will.
More ram would increase the system size, allowing java to use more memory, increasing FPS. Graphics card? From what I've seen, you need like a familty graphics card for minimum, and for maximum, a little less than what I have. So what would be best, is in my eyes, 8GB of ram. Sorry, I can't really take your word for buying something worth over $100 with no proof besides your word.
It may seem that a RAM increase may help... but believe me. i've done it, and it doesn't i may have gained like 5FPS, minecraft is very CPU/GPU heavy and doesn't use that much RAM.
So you're recommending a graphics card. Could I have any evidence of this, I'm sorry. It's hard to take your word (well any word on the internet, especially when it's talking about $100+). If you have any evidence, please link me to it. Thanks for dealing with me though. xD
Edit: found some info on another website. Minecraft does it's rendering through the CPU instead of the GPU, so a good graphics card won't really get you far
CPU = Ram, increasing ram increases CPU, Java loves robbing CPU, bigger hard drive (more ram) = More CPU, = Higher fps.
i have to agree with Lutzee the game is very Cpu/gpu heavy, better gpu means it can load more polygons more quickly and effently.
a good Grahpics card can run the range of 60-150$

Disable OpenGL with optifine or by editing the files yourself. I just still can't see the logic behind minecraft needing a good graphics card, I like the game, and it's graphics, but to be honest I can run Team Fortress 2 Max settings. And I can't run a game that looks 1000 times worse? Not saying it's bad due to graphics, never will, just saying that I shouldn't need a new graphics card. I feel as if ram would work better.
The Radeon HD 6670 prices for about $70 on ebay, it is a perfectly acceptable gaming graphics card
Once again, I don't believe I need a new graphics card. Modern games I may need one, but for Minecraft, I don't think so. So for now, I'm sticking on my side until I get some sort of picture/video evidence.
For all intents and purposes, the amount of load minecraft puts on PCs will class its performance rating as matching those modern AAA titles. I can put this into perspective, If you buy more RAM first, and you don't get the results you were hoping for you've wasted $35, if you buy a graphics card, you are guaranteed of some performance boost.
And my proof is this though he is testing on those AAA titles minecraft will relate, you will get better performance. And you get a better graphics card anyway.
Well, I contacted my friend over skype, he had 4GB, after upgrading his ram to 8GB he noticed a less jumpy minecraft, due to the fact of more memory. He then upgraded his graphics card. He told me it helped him on games like Call Of Duty, yet no effect at all on minecraft. I'm going to go with an extra 4GB, also the video isn't talking about minecraft.
well i tested the Graphic Card upgrade i gone from 5-10 fps on Max graphics to 28 - 30Fps Thats Upgrading from a Nivdia 8500 GT to a AMD HD radeon 6450.
im only running my game on 2 gigs ram and 3.00gz cpu. im on a 32 bit system.

Linkguy you're correct that minecraft is very processor dependent. I feel that your processor is your biggest thing holding you back, however as I said in my earlier post the integrated graphics is run by the processor, this takes processing time away from other tasks. Having a dedicated video card will at least free the processor up from spending its time managing some of that. That alone will help. Not to mention a dedicated video card has it's own RAM on board which will also free up some of your system RAM.
Thus I still stand by my advice that a video card would be a better investment. Your friend may have saw an improvement with more RAM because he has different computer habits than you. He may be running google chrome with dozens of pages open while he's playing and/or be a heavy mod user.

Edit: Bought both, and installed both. Fps is now 80 max settings.
Specs:
AMD Athlon™ II X2 250 Processor
CPU speed 3.0 GHz
Ram: 4GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4200
64 Bit PC with 64bit Java
