Made progress on the boat dispenser. I didn't want it to stick out at all-- I want it to kind of merge in with the volcano, to keep the look natural. Right now it kind of blends in, but I plan on making it look like part of the volcano-- maybe even a second vent? Here's the view from the boat:
I still need to make a system to get out of the boat before it goes back into the dispenser. Right now you have to line it up and jump out while it's moving, which is kind of a pain.
This is what it looks like inside of the volcano, from the top of my elevator:
(Picture taken still inside of the minecart at the top of the elvator.)
As you can probably guess, my glowstone stockpile is very low now as well. I REALLY need to go mining and make a nether trip, but there's so much stuff I want to do to my base right now that I can't really bring myself to stop my other projects to go mining.
After a hour of mining, I realized I had my most dissapointing mining trip ever.
I used nearly 2 full diamond picks (1 full one + one that only had around 3/4 remaining,) and I came back with a full 13 iron, 62 coal, 57 redstone, and NO diamond.
I did however spend a few iron shovels repleneshing my dirt supply, that was somehow dwindling =P
Not once have I ever had such a crappy mining trip. Time to go back down (using iron picks now because Im out of diamond,) and hope I replenish some of my stockpile.
Quick update: I fixed my hostile mob problems (where they'd totally freeze after a while.)
While I was mining I came upon a pretty good amount of caves I hadn't seen before, and lit them up. Now I get some of the best spawn rates I've ever had in my world =D
Now that more people are starting to post I'll make an effort to respond to every reply =D It's difficult for me to reply to some though, since some of them there isn't really much to say to.
PLEASE GIVE ME IDEAS ON WHAT TO BUILD. If I use your idea, I'll put a sign up on it with your name =D
If you have a LP (video or textual,) I would like to see it, and if I get any inspiration from it I'll be sure to tell you so you can see my take on whatever you've built. =D
I really really like this! I don't know why more people are posting on this thread! I'm going to watch this thread.
Thanks =D Once I polish it up a bit I'll be uploading a save so you can try and figure out how some stuff works. I appreciate that people are interested in what I'm doing, but even if they weren't, this thread would still go on. It's cool for me to look at the first post and see how much I've changed my world.
This is cool, I've never done a survival island before so you made it look fun. :biggrin.gif:
Survival islands have their ups and downs. As you can see if you read my whole log, you do start to get tired of the island, and it does get kind of butchered from your first view days (if you play legit.)
They are really difficult at first, but just like every other kind of map they get really easy once you have established yourself.
I am really glad though that I started a survival island, since I've never done them before. They are really chalenging and fun, and there's some stuff you can do in a giant ocean that doesn't have quite the same effect as elsewhere, such as my boat. I really like how it sits out in the ocean by itself, with nothing but the sunset as it's backdrop (I put it where it is intentionally =P)
I don't want to put a link on this thread to my save until I polish everything up and get it working to where I want to. I also still need to make a wheat farm =P
And I finished the chicken farm. =D When it's enabled, the chickens are held in place by trapdoors, and lay eggs. I can also use this as a rudimentary way to disable my passive mob farm-- I just Enable the egg farm, and so many chickens build up that the mob limit gets reached and no more mobs can spawn =D
When it's disabled, the trapdoors open, and the chickens jump into fire and die. Trapdoors below the farm close, to keep the annoying, useless feathers from dropping into my collection area =P
Next steps I'm guessing will be wheat farms (Even though I don't use bread =P), and cactus farms.
I've made the decision to do a slime farm first, for one main reason-- resources. Since slime farms have to be close to bedrock, they all the different resources. That's a good thing for me, since I was running low before starting this project. Now I'm still a little low, but nowhere near as bad =D
Progress clearing out the area:
It's a 3x3 chunks area. 4 of the chunks are slime friendly, and I cleared out the rest so it's square, because squares are easier to work with when it comes to water flow than rectangles, or in my case what would be a L/V shape.
Slime farm done. Here's the loot collection point (I still need to pretty it up.)
The slime farm was a real pain to build since it was so big. It covered a 3x3 chunk area, and I ran out of TNT after clearing the second out of 9. It is 2 high, so large slimes still spawn, but they suffucate and seperate into smaller ones. It has canals going all around the outside (slimes head towards edges automatically, almost like they want to die :wink.gif:) the canals all lead to a central point, that has a drowning trap for the medium slimes. Under the trap is a 1 wide canal that the small slimes go through.
The small slimes climb a series of ladders (They go up ladders,) and lead all the way up to my storage room, where they then fall down 4 blocks and die in the collection point in the above picture.
I don't think Im in dire need of resources anymore. Here's what I got from building this (I put all the items in 1 chest for you guys to see =D) I used 3 diamond picks (1 was already damaged.) The second pick came out of my last remaining diamonds that I had before, then I built the next one using diamonds from building this thing. I used up that one, then about a quarter of another one.
Wow. This is really good. How much of this are original ideas?
Almost all of them are based on other peoples ideas somehow (There really aren't many original ideas in MC =P,) but I've adapted them all to fit into my circumstances and location. Any of the more famous minecraft LP's (Docm, Ethos, etc,) you'll see that almost everything they build they have to credit somebody somehow.
The slime farm I made 100% myself, based on information about slimes I've heard in videos (If you drown them they split, they head towards the edge of a room, small slimes climb ladders, and if you make a drowning pit with a 1 wide canal in the bottom small slimes will be seperated and big ones will split.) I made it 3x3 chunks because I looked at a map of my area that showed slime-spawnable chunks, and decided that having it that size was the most efficient way to fit in the most chunks possible. It could have been 4 chunks big total, instead of 9, but then I would have had a lot less resources, and it would be harder to make an on/off switch (coming soon,) and to handle the water flows.
I haven't seen people use the ideas of you stepping on a pressure plate to harvest your farm, but I'm sure it's been thought up.
The minecart station was my own idea, designed by myself, without videos, but I know for a fact that other people have made similar setups before me, since making a pez dispenser and a track switcher isn't hard =P
I also made a hidden piston door 100% myself, with no help from videos, that you'll see a video of coming up in this thread soon =D I made it activated by pressure plates, but I extended the amount of time you have to run through by extending a monostable circuit.
The aesthetics and base design was all me, but you'd expect that (hopefully.)
I haven't seen people use the idea of a cargo ship as a storage warehouse before, so I guess that was my original idea =D Same with having a base under a volcano. The volcano was designed 100% by me, without reference pictures.
I died a lot playing through it because right under the island was a massive cave system I kept running into whenever I tried to make a first day shelter xD

Sorry about the lack of sound. And the credits at the end. And the lack of captions. I kinda don't know what I'm doing =P

Thanks again man =D Have fun looking around the save!
Oh really? If you want, you can send me pictures or videos of the stuff, and I can give you my opinion on what you can add/remove/keep the same =D
Every now and again (About 1 in 5 full harvests,) a log replaces smoothstone.
It's not a big deal, just a bit of an annoyance to have to replace a stone block every now and again =P

I got mine in the Maps subforum.
Here's the specific one I did:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/367361-surv-you-cant-make-it-survive-this-island-v10-survival-island-500-downloads/
I died a lot playing through it because right under the island was a massive cave system I kept running into whenever I tried to make a first day shelter xD
Now I can make all the sticky pistons I want 8D
