I like the idea, seems like it could be very in-depth and elaborate, with many different combinations to choose from, but it seems a little too restricted to me. Battles might be better if the weapons and shields actually had a direct influence on each other and the hull, so that it would actually mattered where they shot and what points were best shielded. Rather than just "Upgrading" a ships stats you could directly add new weapons and deflectors, and program your own algorithms to best fight the ship. Flexibility is important, and if battles were just determined by stats then it would be far less interesting. Yours would definitely be easier to program though, so maybe a dual-implementation would be necessary.

It is kind of slow here. I would like to see some movement, even just a tech demo that adds a phaser and some Borg to shoot at, to gain some more support for this mod. Also, doing a full implementation of real-time ship movements would be massive! It would take a game of its own! Meanwhile, I have taken Star Trek Online up again. There is a great game with some great inspiration to be had.

I think we (when I say we, I mean the people who can actually make mods etc...) should make an early version for release to let people use, this will get the mod to get some supporters and more people interested, and then start making updates for it to keep people interested. also an idea for the mod itself, we should make starfleet command give orders that the player can follow through with or ignore, they can constantly get missions that involves exploring or destroying or trading depending on paths that the players go down.

but aren`t tribbles supposed to be trouble? and dont they breed uncontrollably? so, should it be made that if you simply breed 2 of them together, they keep multiplying unless you kill them all?

I think we should make a weapons addon to the mod because there are so many of them, it could be in a addon that also includes advanced ship mechanics, more quadrants, and basically more for the die hard star trek fans that also play mincraft.

if people are going to be doing their own thing in this mod, we need to set a deadline for different versions to get in, i don't know how long mods take to make, but if we do that, we know who will be actually contributing, also we could have a vote on what parts to use and then make it all compatible to itself, or we could turn the whole thing into a tekkit modpack thingy.

An expansion pack? That could be interesting. Might be more trouble than its worth though, because there would have to be a lot of interconnectivity between the mods, but in fact, we could make mods FOR the startrek mod, create an API for it that more complex additions could use, and that would shunt some big stuff off the main mod.
Though, we have to be careful, if we split it up too much then it gets hard to install and maintain.
This mod will take a very long time to make, we will definitely want to be working together on one single mod or maybe two, at least at the beginning. And at the moment I'm not sure who is actually interested in coding other than myself though.

What I need is a short name that I can use in the code, those are too long, and would portably change with version, which could severely mess things up in the code. I kind of like MineTrek, but that was already used, so they might not like us coopting it.

What ore generation do you have going so far? I think things like: Dilithium (Pretty rare, pretty valuable,) Duranium (The Iron of the mod), Platinum (Gold of the mod), Copper (similar role to other tech mods, useful and abundant metal). Other rare and odd-ball ore might be nice for specialized components. Alloys would be great to, like tritanium, which is a duranium alloy.
I have been on the MineTrek server before, and they were great people. You might consider talking to the texture pack artist about the use of some of their textures (phaser, armour, batlith, etc..)
As for the name I like Starcraft! *realizes that, that too is already taken*
Lastly, we should get an Irc channel, where we can drop by and communicate with all interested in contributing.

Right now I'm enhancing the adventure part of the map so there should be a huge update soon. Also the resource packs are not yet optimized for 1.7.2 (but they work).
