Did I prompt a mod update with that part? Swimming seemed to be about as strenuous as standing which does seem a little borked so I guess I can't be TOO upset if you 'fix' it, haha. I would've survived anyhow but that made things a lot easier. If you fix it I might just restart on the same map in order to play it correctly. I can probably get a better start anyways now that I know how to make proper use of seeds/raw sugar.
Also, I've not found a use for sinew. What can I do with it? I can't make armor with it but that's really the only thing I've tried.
I've since made a boat so getting back and forth from my mushroom island to my big tree island takes a lot less time and my range from the mushroom island has increased. I also made a chest and sandstone furnace. I got TORCHES! Lit up some mini caves on the Mushroom isle and found a huge deposit of gravel - Exciting stuff.
Some other things that I've found useful. Bowls. Especially having found a mushroom island I have an endless supply of food with mushroom stew. Love the flint axe as well!
Do you suggest I give my playthrough a restart since I used what might be an exploit?
Sinew can be used as a substitute for string when crafting bows. Torches are a real luxury, aren't they? One gets tired of living in the dark.
I took a break from coding yesterday but I'll be back at it today and will be taking a look at swimming and a few other things. It would be great if you started that world again once the next update is out, I'm sure you'll notice a difference.
Phew! So...I have gotten pretty far in my latest world. It's the 3rd I've played since your update. The first couple didn't seem to have any gravel anywhere. It was ridiculous. I appreciate the tweaks to swimming. Makes things seem a lot more realistic (all things considered).
This latest world has been quite an adventure. My spawn is in the middle of a forest biome it seems. Which means Wood Spiders at night. NO THANKS! I knew I had to relocate immediately. I started heading SW, harvesting every tall grass on my way and munching periodically. I skipped by all animals and focused on grabbing seeds and sugar. I noted the location of animals but wanted to save as many as possible for when I can cook their meat.
I cross a small creek thingy and notice a little cave on a hillside. I very quickly scout the cave opening and notice a pretty decent amount of gravel. BAM! I'll be coming here later. Continuing onward I encounter a HUGE field of tall grass. Pretty perfect spot for gathering - so that's what I did. About 20 or so seeds later (even after making sure I was at full saturation) I head over hill side towards a giant Oak. Landmarks are good...To the right of this big ass tree is a 4 deep, 3 wide and 2 high cave. Completely encased in smooth stone - I'm home.
There are many other caves nearby. One seems to be mass producing creepers as I arrive to the opening. It is getting late so I use the opportunity to do some creeper mining. BOOM! Sss - BOOM! And just like that 10 dirt and some sand. At the entrance to my cave I make a dirt doorway. I realize this won't be enough to keep the riff-raff out all night but I've got enough dirt to make it double thick leaving only a 1x1 hole to see through. Night comes and goes - We're good.
The next few days I spend scouring the landscape for resources. Making note of direction and travel time of any gravel deposits I find. Mainly just collecting seeds and killing chickens that I come across since they are the easiest to kill if you Hworang air combo them. This is in my opinion an essential skill to master. The nights are becoming very awesome as I've managed to get some non-punchbreak blocks in the doorway and a kill platform set up. I clean up at night gaining probably a level each of the first three nights.
Fast forward about an MC week and I've gotten a couple hatchets made, collected some wood and enough sand to skip right to the sandstone furnace. I get a coal piece made and get some shovels because gravel collection needs to pick up. I never let a wood tool break. One use prior to destruction I pocket them for use in my furnace. One tool will cook a piece of meat or create one charcoal. Between that and one more punchbreak material is a no-brainer. I also manage a gold hook rod, couple clubs and the zombie HORDES that attack my little cave at night have been well armed and haven't minded sharing.
Present day I am level 8 with a pretty good cooked food stockpile, full stack of seeds plus what I carry on me (thank you gigantic tall grass field and bonemeal) I am 8 copper nuggets away from a pickaxe and I will likely carry a silver dagger soon too. I have progressed very slowly as my priority has been food stability over tool progression but I think the strategy has served me well. The water is still my friend by the way I have set up a couple fishing camps with lily pads and some no-grav blocks over top to get the most out of rainstorms. I know the surrounding area well and have identified several deposits of resources within striking distance. I travel with a combination of punchbreak and non-punchbreak materials so I can hole up in an area overnight if need be and clean house with my mighty bone of face smashing +1.
I have never been so frustrated with a mod in all my MC days. I don't know if I hate melee or range skellies more. They are hyper crazy fast and the melees are on you in no time flat. While the rangers can snipe you as you run pretty effectively. Spiders are still the biggest challenge. Once I get a nice stockpile of arrows though I don't see them being much of a problem. As for the new underground mobs...We'll see.
TL;DR - This mod rocks and I will post screens of level 10 + Pickaxe hopefully later!

Fantastic! You're learning all the tricks of the game quickly by the sounds of it
Your stories are an inspiration to all of us. Keep it up!
I don't seem to have such luck. I spend more time collecting seeds/sugar and punching leaf/grav blocks than anything else. Starvation gets me more than the mobs do. I once spent an entire Minecraft day just trying to get my items back. Spiders and zombies with helmets never seem to despawn.
I'd love to do an LP of this mod now that I know what the hell I'm doing. But I honestly wouldn't know the first thing about doing such a video... -Kash
An LP with a level 8 character in it would be great to watch, plus I think you could teach people a few things. I don't know much about video production myself so I can't give you any tips for it, unfortunately.

Mob despawning works a bit differently with this mod. Once a mob sees or attacks you then it won't despawn for a long time. A strategy you can try is to lure the mobs away from your dropped items and then circle around to grab them. Your ability to fight mobs is very limited in the beginning.
The code for MITE hasn't been adapted to run on servers, but it works fine over LAN. You can use VPN software such as Hamachi to play with distant friends via LAN mode if you like.

Where are those screenshots of your soon-to-be-acquired pickaxe? It's been a while since we've had an update...you didn't come to a bad end in the wilds, did you?
So...I seem to be having a major issue with my computer...It freezes constantly. I think something might be going on with the video card.
I made it to Level 12, had 2 Picks, a hoe, good amount of coal (better to use 1 coal to convert 8 logs to charcoal than burn them directly!) and enough copper for at least 4 more picks. I had a farm growing, stacks of logs, mushrooms - things were going good.
My computer is on the fritz and my external hard drive is messed up too. It'll be a while before I'm back online with my MC computer. Until then I want to see more stories!
Best of luck getting your computer problems solved. An unstable system is no fun and it can corrupt your worlds too. I have a similar problem with mine though it happens less frequently, about once a day.
It would be great if more people posted their survival stories. The forum threads for MITE have been quiet these last few days. I'd like to see more activity but can't complain too much, the overall reception for this mod has been pretty good.
Chain mail armor provides only a bit more protection than leather but its main advantage is its durability and ability to be repaired on an anvil. Bread restores 8 points of fullness and 4 points of nutrition. It doesn't provide a whole lot of nutrition but is fairly effective at keeping hunger at bay for long periods of time.
A sandstone abode in the desert sounds like a great place to live and nurture your crops. Makes me think of Tatooine. Those burning mobs can cause a lot of property damage.
That house is the most magnificent structure I've seen anybody make playing the MITE mod. And look at that character development! You really have been playing since January
Your farming operation looks top notch, lots of sugar cane planted in the distance too, I see. Is that second smaller structure the remnants of a previous shelter?
You've done a great job of established a defensible and sustainable foothold in the desert, very impressive indeed. Where will the story go from here? We'll have to wait and see.
I've been hoping for a mod like this for some time. I love it! However, I'm still quite terrible at it.
The first time I played, I spawned at the border between a huge plain and a huge desert. This is not a great starting point, considering the importance of sticks. Cue a lot of running and starving, with a parade of monsters in toe. Ragequit at level -33.
I've had no end of troubles coming up with ways to survive the night. My flimsy dirt and sand barricades are swept aside with ease. My attempts to hide, while farcical, never fail to end in tragedy. Standing and fighting just leads to humiliating defeat. The creatures seem to enjoy gathering at my spawn point. I suspect the endless cycle of death and rebirth amuses them.
Twice I've had monsters spawn in the very dark space I'd carved out for myself for protection. One time I was patiently replacing each sand block broken by the zombies on the other side of the little wall I'd built next to a tree. Suddenly, a wood spider spawned over my head in the close darkness. Do I need to describe what happened next?
Eventually, I began to gain traction in a world that spawned me in a swamp. I'm still struggling (level -15!), but sheer desperation has led me to some ridiculous--but workable--survival tactics.
My spawn point sits near a particularly large open water area riddled with lily pads. These lily pads are my saviors. Assuming I have the calories on hand, I can crouch on one like the pathetic frog that I am, far from the land's edge, and wait for the sun. When the day comes, I hop into the water swim and back to the shore.
This works for a while, but what if it rains? Well, since this is a swamp, the open water is still quite shallow, even so far out. I was able to collect enough dirt and sand to a make a strange little "island". Since dirt falls like sand and cannot be used to form a roof, when the rain comes I just stick my trusty crafting table to a small pillar and shiver under that until the weather clears. Heroic!
I'm well on the way to scraping together enough flint to make a true axe, something that will yield more wood than a mere hatchet. Sleep is a luxury I cannot yet afford, yet I dream. I dream of having a bed and a chest, maybe even a boat. It's difficult to think much further ahead than that.
This is an excellent narrative that describes some of the scenarios and situations that one can (and likely will) encounter while playing the game. A fine read, thank you.
Also, you'll be happy to know that while tools are typically less durable in MITE boats have been made more sturdy than in vanilla.
Save that seed! You may have found the ultimate hardcore survival challenge
There might be some gravel under all that grass and dirt. If so you could make a hatchet, harvest some wood, craft a boat and sail to the nearest coast.
This latest installment of yours recounts a tale most extraordinary. Leaving the safety of home and traveling to far lands in search of a single precious sapling is about as good as a story can get. The risk was great but the rewards greater still. Who wouldn't want to eat chocolate, cookies and ice cream in the desert?
Alternating crop types to minimize blight is brilliant. So is using bone meal to secure your initial seed vegetables.
And thank you for mentioning the XP issue with baked potatoes. It will be fixed in R50.
Also, I've not found a use for sinew. What can I do with it? I can't make armor with it but that's really the only thing I've tried.
