AR Minecraft Based on the Classic '80's RPG!
This is the City and Dungeon from the classic 80's RPG Alternate Reality originally by Philip Price. The mod extends Minecraft with Alternate Reality Style Blocks, Secret Doors, Original Graphics, Sounds and more.I started working on this mod a few months back when I saw an older post where someone mentioned that it would be nice to recreate AR in Minecraft. Being a huge MC fan (and a past huge AR fan in another life), I decided to take it on.
I started out working to build the map and mod for MC 1.5.x and this package is available on my curse page. I have also upgraded the mod to work with MC 1.6.2 and 1.6.4. I have got most everything working in the latest iteration including the custom AR sound effects. I'll be updating the mod for MC 1.7.x as soon as possible.
January 2014 Update (Final update for MC 1.6.4. I am beginning work on MC 1.7.2 release now, but will be awhile.):
- Added new surrounding terrain.
- Added The Oracle block.
- Fixed a bug causing multi-texture AR blocks to face the wrong direction when placed.
- Added recipes for a number of AR blocks!
AR City Street - "xy", 'x', Stone Block, 'y', Gravel Block
AR City Wall - "xy", 'x', Stone Block, 'y', Lapis Lazuli Ore Block
AR Mirage City Wall - "xyz", 'x', Bottle 'O' Enchantment, 'y', AR City Wall Block, 'z', blockGlassStack
AR Dungeon Floor And Ceiling - "xy", 'x', Cobblestone Block, 'y', Gravel Block
AR Glow Stone (Recipe 1) - "xyz", 'x', Glowstone Dust, 'y', Lapis Lazuli Ore Block, 'z', Glass Block
AR Glow Stone (Recipe 2) - "xy", 'x', Lapis Lazuli Dye, 'y', Glow Stone Block
AR Mirage Pane - "xy", 'x', Bottle 'O' Enchantment, 'y', Glass Pane
Mirage Book Shelf - "xyz", 'x', Bottle 'O' Enchantment, 'y', Book Shelf, 'z', Glass Block
Mirage Glass Block - "xy", 'x', Bottle 'O' Enchantment, 'y', Glass Block
Mirage Mossy Stone Bricks - "xyz", 'x', Bottle 'O' Enchantment, 'y', Mossy Stone Brick Block, 'z', Glass Block
Mirage End Stone - "xyz", 'x', Bottle 'O' Enchantment, 'y', End Stone Block, 'z', Glass Block
AR Minecraft for MC 1.6.4 is compatible with the following mods and it is recommended that you install these as well to enjoy the best experience with the mod. The mod and map set will work without them however.
- Adventure Time Mod v2
- Animated Player 1.3.0
- DrZharks MoCreatures 6.0.1 (not 100%)
- GalactiCraft 2.0.4
- LOTR Public Beta 10
- mapwriter-2.0.11
- MCA v3.5.2
- qCraft 1.02
- revamp1.2.2
- SPC 5.2 (Forge Version)

I'd love to hear opinions, critiques, suggestions, questions, whatever!
A while back I imported the city map to MC. Wasn't the best import in the world, translating a 2d map to 3d it still needed a lot of work. I sort of gave up because I didn't have the tools availiable to make the one way doors and secret walls that are in AR. Now with this mod, I might pick up on that again.
You need a mapmaker? I'd love to put time into this. Would be neat to actually have the entire AR series on a single MC map. Any chance you're worlking on a turn based combat system? (My guess is yes, why else would you have taken it this far)
If not I've pretty much hashed out the mechanics of how to make this work in MC.Should have watched the videos first. Looks like you have the mapmaking handled.

I never really planned to replicate all of the original mechanics into the AR mod. I also have never decided where exactly I would stop. I already took care of the one-way doors and secret walls (at least with my own solutions). But I would certainly welcome a "Partner In Crime"!
Have you DL'd the mod for 1.5.2 or 1.6.2 and tried it out? If you pull down the recommended mods for whatever version of MC you are running then it will be much more enjoyable. Dragonmounts, MCA & MapWriter are awesome. I can't wait for Animated Player & Mo Creatures to be updated for 1.6.2. Those 5 mods really make ARMinecraft a better experience. For the record, I am also running the SPC mod under both 1.5.2 and 1.6.2.
Try playing with all of the mods in 1.5.2 and let me know what you think. Then setup the 1.6.2 release and try that. You need build FML build 804 (recommended) for the 1.6.2 version of ARMinecraft.
Forcing a turn-based combat in a real-time 3D environ would be interesting. You'd almost have to "freeze" the action. I'd be interested in hearing about your concept for it.
9 More posts till I have 2 more approved posts :.(
I'm at work right now so I can't test things out yet (but not even the devourer will stop me tonight!) I've always thought MC to be a fairly good engine for AR. Weather, day/night cycles. Even "The Palace" expansion, and letting the wealthy purchase modifications to walls in the city.
I've mulled over TBC (turn based combat) in MC for a while now. Basic mechanics would work like this..
For each player, a mirror of the map would be created. (You don't want other players interferring with TBC) I also like the idea of keeping players isolated from one another, that feeling of isolation and desolation being stranded in Xebec's demise was part of the games charm.
Both player and monster are contained within a glass/invisable cage when TBC begins. Something like...
In front of the player would be buttons or signs connected to command blocks. The buttons/signs would corrospond with TBC commands (parry, attack, disengage, etc)
Player would use/punch buttons to initiate commands.
Could host from my house too just for dev purposes, got a nice 8 core xeon in the garage running centos. (I can run vanilla and craftbukkit fine, might need assistance in getting yours running) Would happily chip in monthly for some decent hosting once we're ready for the world.

Just let me know what you need.
Forgot to mention, I can do a bit of QA work as well. I can make some pretty decent bug reports.
Improvements.
One thing I can think of off the top of my head, Torch simulation in the dungeon. Man, those were really scary moments when it got too dark to see down there.
It got me to thinking though, lighting levels would need to be unique to each player on the server. I'm guessing you want players to see other players (This does sort of go in line with Philip Price's thinking.. BTW did you know he *just* did a QA on atariage?)
So how would you do that??? Does MC allow you to control lighting for each player? I guess if it doesn't, you could fall back to multiple copies of the map on a single server. To show other players, do a mirror ghost of all players on all maps.
You sir have a faithful squire.
Jeesh, so many good memories of this game. For this age of gamers to discover it..
Was thinking for a while, AR could be a personality test of sorts for servers. Before you let someone in on a creative area of a server, they have to play through. They have to learn how to be good.

That is an interesting concept. I am not sure how I would begin coding it. It'll take some thought. Do you have any ideas on the coding?
Anyway, I am working on sound generation right now. I have the City/Dungeon Secret Door sounds working. There are two sound features on my target list.
1.) Location abient sounds. Smithy hammer, Arena swords, Palace, etc...
I have already begun the coding for this stuff. It involves proximity detection so that if a player is within so many blocks of a given area, the appropriate sound effect kicks in. I also want to have the volume increase/decrease depending on distance.
2.) Guild/Tavern Music. I want to setup a random song player in each location that will play a song appropriate to the establishment. I have begun coding on this already and have it working (not very nicely at the moment.. actually pretty badly!) I'll keep working on it.
Another thing you'll notice in the map is that I have begun working on the one-sided invisible walls in the city. This includes the walls near the city square as well as the Light Wizards guild locations in the city and dungeon. This is also only partially complete, but it's only me working on the code in spare time. It's a lot of work!
FYI - I am leaving for Canada on Friday and will not be back home until the end of the month. (My wife and I have to attend a family wedding up there.)

Those errors are expected. They will occur if you don't have the other recommended mods installed (i.e. MCA, etc...).
Your server sounds awesome. I do not run a hosting server at home. I have an IX4 that I use for media and storage (2TB, RAID0) but that is it.
I have run the ARMinecraft mod on standard and BUKKIT in the past. But that was before I did all the custom blocks and stuff so we would have to run a FORGE server at this point. I have seen a BUKKIT/FORGE implementation out there, but I have not tried it.
I would be up for some type of hosting at some point. There is still a lot of coding to do. I could definitely use help in that area. And then if we were to start doing AR NPC's, we'd need someone for modeling. I can do it, but I'm not great at it and very slow. I don't do coding for a living. It's just a hobby at times. (I'm really a storage engineer at EMC in the daytime and right now, I'm on my lunch break!).
