Hello all. I'm R-T-B, second maintainer of the BiomeTerrainMod, and creator/updater/sucessor/whatever-you-want-to-call-it of PhoenixTerrainMod. I want to come back to the scene and work on this again, but I have some questions and no offense but I can't be bothered to work on these as I'm currently working on my old 1.7 source code to finish the BO2 interpreter and make a new release.
I have some questions for the community regarding this revival:
I have been completely out of the minecraft community since 1.7. I have NO IDEA what's been going on. I hate to play it lazy but I'm working hard at the moment to finish a large scale rewrite of the code to fix memory leaks and other crap. Really could use advice and if you want to help with the mod explaining to me very slowly the past 4 months or so would be excellent.
Main questions:
What are the mod tools available now? Did Notch release his API? How do I get my hands on it?
Did the 1.8 update totally screw up gameplay? Should I stick with 1.7 and just move forward without updating?
Did anyone pick up the mod to carry it forward? Can I get in touch with them somewhere?
How's Bukkit/MCP doing? Is a Bukkit build something that is still needed? My bukkit code is massively out of date so if I can skip the Bukkit users it would help ALOT.
Is someone still maintaining BBOB?
Anything else you can think of.
PS: My family is doing fine. I'm over (as much as one can be over) my grandmothers death and my father is currently seeing a specialist in Seattle. I have a lot of spare time thanks to an early winter break. :smile.gif:
Oh darn, nice first piece of advice man. :wink.gif:
Where should it go? Can a mod move it for me? Very sorry for the wrong section posting.
You could change the title to "please move this", and a mod should move it. Also about the terrain mod, notch changed the terrain generation code and said it would be easier to edit world gen, so your mod should be easier to continue on.

Thank you for making a point and not flaming or anything.

Welcome back, R-T-B! Good to see you here again! :smile.gif: I've been a fan of your work on the Phoenix Terrain Mod for a while... I just usually don't talk much.

Pretty much the same as you left, I think. Almost all mods require Modloader. There seems to be a shift towards Forge (which also requires ModLoader) on the part of some modders, but that could just be my perception.
Notch has not released any sort of API, and the code remains as obfuscated as ever. The official release coincides with Minecon at the end of this week, though, so it might be worth waiting until then to do any heavy work with the code.
Did the 1.8 update totally screw up gameplay? Should I stick with 1.7 and just move forward without updating?
The 1.8 update changed some aspects of gameplay. Some like it, some don't. Given that the official release is coming, I would update at that point... less work for you if you skip 1.8 and the 1.9 prereleases, and your mod will have the widest possible audience.

I'm happy to hear things are improving for you... that stuff can be rough. Best wishes to you and yours, particularly your father. :smile.gif: Having something to fill your spare time will probably be a good thing.
Got most of the info I needed from that, awesome thanks. One last question. I have lost my old minecraft 1.7.3 server. Is there something like minecraft Nostalgia to bring me a patch for an older server version? (I OBVIOUSLY own minecraft. I have since alpha!)
Hi R-T-B. It's good to see you around again. Regarding the PTM code: I'm not aware of anything at all happening regarding Vanilla Minecraft and PTM.
The Cubic Chunks Mod, however, now has native Cubic-Code versions of some of the PTM functions thanks to that code you supplied and Robinton's re-engineering of it for 3D Chunks. But there is so very much yet to be converted.
In addition to people needing your help in bringing PTM to greater 3D-chunk heights, notch has finally adjusted some code in the 1.9pre's which allows for mods to adjust the linear chunks heights, to both smaller and higher levels. Please see my Higher Worlds thread OP for links to those mods exploiting those changes.
Your knowledge and experience with this subject and code are greatly needed. Especially regarding BOB's. Please contact me, and or Robinton, if you wish to continue making the huge and meaningful contributions to the Minecraft community and experience that you were before. We need you.
Woow! It is awesome news you've got there! :biggrin.gif:
I would suggest taking a look at Minecraft Forge API and it's functionalities in terrain generation. You could even ask for implementation of additional hooks, or implement it yourself because ForgeAPI is Open-Source. :smile.gif: Also, there's a group that is porting Forge mods to Bukkit. They've ported some major mods, like BuildCraft, IndustrialCraft and RedPower.
People said 1.8 to 1.9 didn't change much, so it should be better to port directly for the Full Release. If you want to prepare ahead for the Full Release, you could use RC2 or 1.9pre.
Thank you for this amazing mod! :smile.gif:
I hope to see it in it's fully awesomness again! :tongue.gif:

Ok, I'll take a look at that! I know MCP though, is it still around.
I've reached out to one of my old devs, Khorn. He's been maintaining the sucessor for Bukkit under the name "Terrain Control." To be clear to everyone, the new project will be based on this due to Khorn's many awesome innovations (per biome control, proper multiworld, and other awesome awesome stuff). This will simply be a single player variant of that and to be clear, I'm officially joining that project with Khorn as head of the team (not me). This should provide stability should I fall victim to family tragedies again (god I hope not).
To get a taste of what you'll be getting, please check out the Bukkit Plugin, "Terrain Control":

Is the support for vanilla SMP is going to be discontinued? :sad.gif: If so, I can see why the decision was made easily enough, and I certainly have no claim over anyone's time but my own.
Thanks for the fine work you've put into this... it produced some fantastic worlds for us! :smile.gif: Maybe somewhere along the line, I'll switch over to bukkit for our server. I'll keep an eye on this.
Yay, my old alpha server relied on these maps to stay true to it's name. Jebbbbbbby is also makin' API I guess now, so that should help. Will probably be awhile. Dunno. Good luck.
Ooh! Sounds awesome, good to have you back! :smile.gif:
Khorn has been doing great work on the bukkit plugin. Great to see you're joining forces again! One question. Is there an IRC channel you two frequent? Or maybe there's another place where we can get in touch with you guys? From my experience, there end up being a lot of different threads and other places where comments are placed so that it can be a pain to monitor everything.
You should REALLY update this in my opinion. My main usage would be Bukkit, but Khorn is already developing that, i'm not sure if he's continueing it but this is the most awesome mod i have ever used.
I'm not sure if anybody mentioned this, but your mod was (sort of) continued by Rebelj12a as a Bukkit plugin. There have also been a few others such as BO2 Populator and Terrain Control.
Rebelj12a has an account here on MCF so I'm sure you could get in contact with him if you need to.
Glad to see you back, and I hope you're doing well :3

Hawkheart has been working on it a bit according to this post: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/313991-173-phoenixterrainmod-new-status-update/page__view__findpost__p__8404842 It seems there may be a few bugs... I haven't worked with this yet.
There's a group that picked this up for Bukkit (http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/wgen-phoenixterrainmod-v0-8-2-now-bobs-spawn-from-saplings-1060.28520/), so you may be in luck.
Finally, Robinton had done some work integrating your mod into Cubic Chunks (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/310298-181robintons-mods/) that might be worth looking into. The combination of the two could be very interesting.
Haven't a clue. Sorry. :sad.gif:

MCP is still around and as been recently released for 1.0 you can find it here: http://mcp.ocean-labs.de/index.php/MCP_Releases
As well, you might want to look into supporting this little tool going forward, would make it so you could have multiple settings file and choose which one you want with each new world you create: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/511805-181-world-generator-mod-ssp/
