The point of the Altar is to provide a way to get Glowstone without ever touching the Nether. All you need to do is get a little Glowstone from a villager. The Tome of Alkahest, while more efficient, is a lot harder to get (you have to hunt for Wither Skulls, hunt Ghasts, etc.)
Also, another plus for the Altar, you can semi automate it using other mods. You can build a Glowstone farm with it. The Tome of Alkahest isn't automated at all, and it never will be.
So, if you have a ton of Redstone laying around and some tech mod, go make a Glowstone farm. If you have some Redstone, and need just a little Glowstone for your lighting, use an Altar. That's what the Altar is for.
I just had some fun setting up a cyclic assembler in an ME system using a Tome of Alkahest so that I could craft glowstone on demand. The crafting monitor tells me AE is getting hung up on the idea that the Tome does not get used up in the recipe. That's actually kind of a shame, but I don't know if that's on Thermal Expansion's end, Applied Energistics, or Reliquary.

The altar is deliberately weak, in an attempt to prevent Alkahestry from being as powerful as the system in Xeno's old Equivalent Exchange mod. Using the tome, the Alkahest, and the altar together allows you to create an infinite amount of glowstone, redstone, and anything you can make using the tome, so the return rate has to be slow. The tome isn't supposed to replace farming for specific items, just make some of them a bit easier or more renewable. Using the altar isn't supposed to be faster than going out and collecting items the normal way.
The whole reliquary mod in general is designed with a philosophy of making tasks easier or providing alternate methods to do things, without eliminating the need to do them completely. The items make it easier to hunt certain mobs, and the tome specifically can't be used to create most mob drops, so you can't just farm redstone and avoid fighting mobs.
Short version: The tome isn't a more powerful replacement for the altar. They're intended to be used together.
ok you dont understand my point. first, having to mess with crafting grids is basically half of the game, the "craft" part to be exact, is not something bad, is not like is better to mine it, because you are still going to need to craft it later, unless you only plan to put it in a chest, but i dont think that this is the case.
if you need an use for that redstone, quest what, you already have one, especially if you are using reliquary, as redstone is basically a fuel source for this mod. you can adquire the glowstone dust and also adquire more of other blocks an items using the tome of alkahest, and is faster.
but anyway, the most important thing, i have never say that i dont want the altar in the first place, even if something is pointless to me, as long as is not something intrusive im perfectly ok with it and i dont want it to be removed. what i am saying is that maybe there should be a change in the way the altar works, because right now is just not good enough to be used when you have the tome in the same mod.
and to make it clear i actually like the mechanic behind the altar, what i dont like is having to spend 3 redstone and wait 30 mins to gain between 2 and 4 glowstone when i can just spend those 3 redstone to gain 3 glowstone for sure.
So all this because you believe something needs to be changed. Probably could have been done in less posts but to each his own.
Not sure if this is the place to ask but: I'm having issues crafting the Tome of Alkheist Dragon eggs and many other items from the mod, using Magic World 2. Is this a known issue or is there a way to make them craft-able using the config file?

This. Alkahestry was partially modeled after the alchemy system principles in my own (unreleased) alchemy mod. Specifically, the three core principles of my alchemy are:
Use of renewable resources to encourage farming and monster hunting/grinding,
Alchemy as a slower alternative to directly mining for the desired resources, and
Use of a catalyst (redstone) that is very labor-intensive and complicated to reproduce using alchemy, to encourage mining for ores and using alchemy in a supplemental role.
That said, I agree that the current altar could use some boosting. I love using them for aesthetic reasons, what with all the gold and crosses and Holy water, but they should be a bit more useful, even if that makes them more expensive.
Hey there, I'm using FTB Monster 1.1.1. I'm trying to make a tome of alkahest, but it doesn't give me a recipe. I remember in MC 1.5 you could make this and it gave a recipe in the NEI, so is the mod just not working yet? Or is there something wrong with my game?
Thanks for the help!
i should give you a new gun model. my old one(the one currently in use) is kinda old. i dont know if you want to implement a new model or not, but if you're interessted, then find me at #ichun on irc.

He meant the Tome of Alkahest, not the Alkahest. Two different things, but easily confused.
Anyway, as far as the issue goes, it's a known issue with the newest released (1.6.4) version of Reliquary. If you hit U (for usage) in NEI with any of the crafting components (Wither Skull works fine), you'll find the recipe.

So I made the Tome of the Alkahest, and I'm trying to use it, and it doesn't work. I've used it before, so I do know how, it just doesn't do anything. If I search NEI for recipes for Nether Brick, it tells me the Tome of the Alkahest recipe, but when I do it, nothing happens... Tried it with dirt as well, but still didn't work, so I think it's actually useless right now.
Using version 1.1.2b

The Tome of the Alkahest when crafted gives you the ID of the tome plus the modifier of :256.For example, in my minecraft world my tome of the Alkahest ID is 27530, but when i craft it, the ID ends up being 27530:256. I would say after crafting the Tome of the Alkahest, just throw it away and spawn in one from NEI. Technically its not considered cheating =)
I loved using this mod in Hexxit, but TConstruct was super buggy and Hexxit is still running 1.5.2 D: So I updated regular minecraft to 1.7.2 and am playing that, but when I try to put the Reliquary on it, it crashes. Should I be running a 1.6.X version with this mod, or should it be alright to play with a 1.7.2? I'm still kind of new to this modding thing ._.

Just to make it clear to everyone. This is not a production ready version. Don't put this on your server (unless it's like a development server or something), and don't include this in your modpack. Don't rely on it. There will be bugs. There will be rapid changes. You have been warned.
If any brave souls want to try it out, please report any bugs you find on the Github Issues. Thanks!

From the 1.1.1 release notes:
...ouch, that means lapis isn't as useful as it once was. Guess I'd better get to magical crops if I wanna ensure the resources I need for a pinch.

I'll think about it.
That dude had me worried, omg

Here's the error log it gave me
I'm using the latest Forge as well, but I have the 1.6.4 downloaded too just in case :s
Should be.
There is no released 1.7 version. If you really want one, there is a functioning one in the works here (https://drone.io/github.com/TrainerGuy22/Reliquary/files/build/libs/Reliquary-1.2.jar).

1.7 version seems to be working okay in a group with a bunch of other 1.7 mods.
