As far as i know the canon, the unstable vortex will destroy everything in it's way except energy shields. If that is what you meant. According to wiki:
The vortex is capable of disintegrating virtually anything it touches, including living tissue"
Pile of rocks will prevent the gate from opening if it is inside the ring itself. As for Iris, it is so close to event hirizon that unstable wortex (and everything what can came through the gate) can't "integrate" enough to damage it i think. (Rocks can act similar to Iris if they are at the same distance to event horizon, but otherwise they are vaporized)
According to Sam in one of the episodes, the iris is so close to the event horizon the vortex doesn't have enough room to form. As for the rocks, being inside the ring, even the event horizon can't form. I may be wrong, but I believe this is absolutely correct.
From watching all 10 seasons of SG-1, including Atlantis and Universe and the movies lol.. this is indeed correct. So seeing as you can't actually place something "extremely" close then perhaps anything one block out, or even make a new thin block like a cover called an Iris and have that unbreakable by the gate?.. In one of the episodes of SG-1 the SG gets buried but the gate is still able to establish a connection, however just like Earth's SG the rock is so close to the event horizon the gate is able to form but matter itself cannot pass through as there is no space for it to reconstitute itself. So they instead used a particle beam laser if I remember to bore a hole through the SG into the rock on the other side creating a small cavern in which they then traveled through.
Also if anything is directly inside the gate the connection should fail and not be able to dial.

I asked my sister about the Abydonian Stargate. It had something to do with Daniel staying behind on Abydos and the SGC would check on him after a year. The Abydonians then buried the Stargate as a precaution. Also, I remember this episode where the off-planet gate gets buried. There was a meteor shower and O'Neal got stranded. That definitely establishes a number of rules:
1) The vortex forms with just enough room.
2) The vortex cannot destroy certain matter.
As such, maybe the rule can be that it can destroy organic material (mobs, players, grass, trees, etc.) but not inorganics or ores (dirt, stone, iron ore, block of iron, etc.). I don't know where rails can fit into that. Also, maybe there should be an option for if something is destroyed by the vortex, can it drop an item?
(On a side note, I suddenly realized that the gate that got buried by the meteor shower had just enough space to form a vortex.)

I agree with both of you
I think Greg could make Iris with similar style as gate itself. Gate is basicly a multiblock square 1x5x5 with emty space in it. Here are at least three options :
(warning, my english is really bad )
1) New gate multiblock 1x5x5 and new model. Multiblock can be the same, but ring blocks changed to Iris ring blocks (which could be crafted with ring block surrounded with iron ingots(or trinium alloy ingots for example...new ore required for that). This will kill incoming player when iris activated. It sounds simple and make sense to me: Shouldn't be hard to implement i hope.
2) Make a new gate multiblock 2x5x5 (Gate layer will be same, but instead of base block, there will by another ring block. Then Iris layer, filled square with base block right in a middle. Finished multiblock should create stargate with Iris installed. Function same as in first example, but harder to implement.
3) Make new multiblock 1x5x5 (filled square) with Iris blocks and make it possible to place it in front of the gate, then it will change to thin layer near gate and rest of the block will be invisible. In inactive state, it will be just walk through block, but in active state, it'll be like standing in lava but with much more damage to kill players instantly and destroy their stuff as well. I think this option may be insane and rather ineffective. And it will kill all players not only incaming ones.
...

I don't know where rails can fit into that, unless we can use a piston to raise and lower the rail in front of the gate. Also, maybe there should be an option for if something is destroyed by the vortex, can it drop an item?
...
I watched all SG1 and SGA and never heard about something what could stand a chance against vortex(except energy). Maybe I missed something or it was in SGU which isn't a stargate in my opinion.
I think most players vant actually vortex to be able to destroy blocks like dirt, stone, iron and so..But I may be mistaken.

Yes, but that was, because the melted rocks buried active gate and created something similar to Iris. And vortex doesn't have enough space to form. If I remember it correctly, SGC used particle accelerator to dig a small hole then enlarged it with vortex.

Yeah Daniel understood that actually burying the gate and filling the inner ring with stone prevented the gate from even attempting to establish a connection.

I wouldn't mind seeing something perhaps in the gump where you could craft and add in an "Iris" and then perhaps when the gate activates so does the Iris like in the show, and will kill or destroy anything that passes through unless you somehow deactivate the Iris, perhaps with redstone?

I myself wouldn't mind like I said an option in the config to add your own destroyable blocks, this way to each their own.
Yes, but that was, because the melted rocks buried active gate and created something similar to Iris. And vortex doesn't have enough space to form. If I remember it correctly, SGC used particle accelerator to dig a small hole then enlarged it with vortex.
and yes that was correct it cooled while the gate was active creating it's own "Iris"..
Okay. But, if the vortex couldn't have been formed, then how could they make the connection to use the particle accelerator? Or am I missing something?
When a stargate first opens, we see what looks like a splash of water. In "Prisoners" we learn that this is an unstable wormhole being established between stargates, we also learn that anything in the way of the splash will be instantly disintegrated. How then is the Iris not disintegrated when the stargate opens while it is closed? Granted, the iris is slightly inside the event horizon, but if it would not be affected because of that, the splash should be seen coming past the iris. Neither of these things ever happens. [It is thought of that a wormhole can still be established even if the "splash" is prevented due to the iris as in episode "A Hundred Days" where the stargate is buried, they are still able to dial to it because an iris of sorts was formed (they explain this), they used a proton accelerator (or something) to create a space. Once the space is large enough they can then dial and the "splash" will encompass the whole cavern making it even larger. So for the splash to occur there just needs to be a volume large enough to encompass a minimum amount of the splash.]
Okay. But, if the vortex couldn't have been formed, then how could they make the connection to use the particle accelerator? Or am I missing something?
It was the same as closed Iris. Incoming wormhole and its event horizon is still possible with closed Iris.
From wiki about the vortex:
This event will destroy any matter it comes into contact with; however, if the event horizon is blocked to within a few microns, the vortex will be suppressed. Technologies such as the Iris on Earth's Stargate can achieve this.
Yeah, my information was a bit off, lol, the last episode of any Stargate I watched was the 3rd episode of SGU before I stopped watching it(The story wasn't bad at all for me, I just wanted the comedy and snarky one-liners that were a staple in the franchise.).
My reference to the Minecraft rocks being used as an iris is due to in the mod how you can fill the entire ring with stone blocks or anything, and it will make a connection no matter what, despite the circumstances. So it's a bit unlike Abydos.

That makes sense. The splash is just the kinetic energy created as the wormhole starts. As long as the event horizon has nothing in the way, a connection can be established.

Hehe, yeah I didn't even try anything inside the gate as it didn't occur to me it would allow it to work lol..

and indeed, in the series the SGC tested the connection (if it connected) to see if it was viable by sending a M.A.L.P. if it went splat then they didn't continue lol..

Well, now that we've established some continuity that the mod can be based on, I've been thinking about Greg's idea of using rails with the mod. I imagine that adding the ability to place a rail within the gate in addition to the gate turning circular as well as the fluid effect might over complicate things. Although, I seemed to recall a mod or something where, when you press a button or something, a temporary connection is made between two separate points.
Another idea is something that is built into the powered rails. I tried running powered tracks up to one of the gates and regular tracks on the other gate. I then placed and pushed a cart down the powered rails. It managed to make it through the other gate some 4 or 5 blocks (it won't make it out of the other gate's horizon unless the rails are powered). The thing is I'm just thinking of how it would be placed. The rail would have to be placed to correlate with the middle of the gate for every gate someone plans on having a rail system. Now, rails are easy to walk on. However, how do you orchestrate sending a cart through when no one else is walking through the gate?
There is the possibility of widening the gate. I looked up how wide the Stargate is and the official record has it at 6.7 meters diameter. In Minecraft, the original specifications were that each block is 1 meter across. Right now, the Stargate is 5 blocks/meters across.
I hate to interrupt all the fan-talk of stargate..
But I have actual mod-related issues hehe.
The controller and ring base blocks are not craftable, they just won't work..
I have the default configurations, so crystals are not craftable, but I find them in loot, but even then they cannot be used!
So, anyone?
So you have items in crafting slots but final item won't show?
First of all check what kind of sandstone are you using. There is Chiseled sandstone on top and Smooth sandstone at the bottom. If everything is on right place and you still can't get your blocks, then It is weird because it works nicely for me even in MC 1.6.4

I want to ask something. If I enter the address for example "GLZLNBA", how exactly this address tells the coordinates where is the other gate? Is it something like "GL" is X coordinate "ZL" is Z coordinate and "NBA" dimension or am I wrong completely?
I have suggestion for addresses but I first need to know this..
EDIT: never mind, I already send my suggestions to Greg.
This is a really interesting mod, one suggestion I have is maybe a "fast dial" category? What I mean is a listing of maybe favorite addresses you have found or last few addresses you have dialed.
Reason for this is to use this as a sort of transport system (like it's supposed to be). It can get irritating to type in addresses all the time.
Another way you could implement that could be a computer system (with a separate craft) that interfaces with the Gate and the DHD. You could even have it powered via Naquada, possibly a Naquada engine.
Using this method could also bring to dungeon chests extra gate addresses by way of disks of some sort.
