I looked back through pages for awhile but found nothing on this so I'm sure it's something stupid I'm doing or done. I am running 1.5.3 with no problem how ever when I try to upgrade to 1.5.4 all the basic tools are broken. Even after changing the config file settings!!
And they still have 2 uses before breaking. Maybe if I erase the config files and let it regen one (will have to change block ids back afterwards before starting server just copy it from client). This is from the tinkersworkshop file. Anyone have any thoughts?
Come on, mD. We're trying to help you by working on the wiki and all this. Please, stop making it sound like the wiki is illegitimate and potentially a detriment to the mod. To my knowledge, you gave MrrGingerNinja (the original creator of the wiki) permission to make it.
So you're working on the in-game book code? News to me.
If you search the thread for the term "wiki", you'll find that EVERY instance of someone asking for a wiki or mentioning something about a wiki is met with "I don't like mod wikis". And if you read the books, you'll realize those are a wiki. "Permission" isn't the same as "I love wikis" since it's a wiki. mDiyo's very permissive with things, but that doesn't mean he is required to like it.
Okay, it seems wikis are getting A LOT of smack from you and some part from mDiyo. He says needing a wiki is the failure of the mod developer. I disagree. I believe it's from the failure of the player that a mod needs a wiki. I love that books are included, but the wiki is much more informative. If the books were the same, there'd be quite a few more.If you still believe it's the developer's fault, ask this: why do so many people go straight to the wiki instead of to the books? Some people just don't want them, some toss them out, some just plain like wikis. Other times, its the wiki with more up-to date information. What we would like vandals of the wikis and anti-wikis to know: Take a good look at what you're trashing.Getting of my soapbox for now. Really hope you'll actually read and think this over before posting about this topic, and not stab at your keys in impulse, like I almost did.
The main reason people go to the wiki instead of the books is actually simple and very, very ironic. They're illiterate when it comes to books. They see a book and due to not reading books, go to a wiki instead because it doesn't have anything to do with a book. That's actually not me being smarmy. That's, BY FAR, the number one reason why people ask how TConstruct works. Because they don't read the books because they're books :/
The mod is meant for exploration and tinkering, so the books don't give you every bit of information. People who like mystery and discovery, like the books.
Not everyone likes having to do the work of finding every bit of information themselves, and thus go to the wiki. It serves the purpose of informing those who are too lazy, or too busy, to research everything they can about the mod in-game. This is particularly useful for passive players who just want to know what they need to look for to get the tool they want.
Each one has its own merits, and arguing whether one option or the other is better is stupid. mDiyo has the foresight to realize that not everyone who played the mod would want to read through the books and tinker with the items to discover the facets of the mod. This is why he allowed the wiki to be made. It has nothing to do with whether he likes it or not. (Anyone who deals with literature usually dislikes wikis, since they can easily mislead somone.)
Also, a quick apology if it seems counterintuitive to ask this here, but are any other mods necessary to be installed to find the GardeSlime and the various other "hidden" mobs, such as the Friendermen? I've been wanting to see them for some time, but haven't found any way to activate them in-game thus far.
The wiki talk seems to have went in a "spirited" direction. Let's throw more fuel on the fire! Err, express my own opinions.
My problem with wiki's is not the fact that they house information. They are great for this purpose and is why I deigned to give permission on the TConstruct wiki instead of "whatever" or "do what you like". The mod is about tinkering and experimentation, and some people don't want to do that or prefer to get their information in pieces instead of a coherent whole.
My position on the wiki is neutral. I'd rather bugs be posted here, as I personally don't like wiki's, but it's still a decent source of information.
The problem is mods that require a wiki to do anything with them. How would you build a Smeltery without the TConstruct books? How would you know what recipes did what without NEI? You wouldn't; the mod would be nearly useless. I know certain mods just can't exist without theirs (Forestry being the prime example) and this is why a book is given to everyone when they start in a new world. It's also why multiple books exist; more of the mod needs explained.
Wait, hold the phone. Run that by me again.
I did read your post, and agree with quite a bit. Thanks for the input, however, I do not think you are the one to settle this. From what I've heard, people are saying the wiki should not exist, however the traffic we get says otherwise.
Additionally, I'd like to say I got my start on the wiki by trying to help others who were confused. I made a couple pages on content not covered by the booksanonymously after research, then joined and poured my time and effort into maintaining it, adding content and following the development of the mod. We're all excited how it has progressed in the last few months, and now it feels as if we're being told people hate us for what we've done. I hope this is not the case.
EDIT: mD's post hadn't shown yet when I made this.

We may be talking about different things here, but I'm pretty sure the Frienderman is from BetterStorage...
Never even heard of a GardeSlime, but it definately sounds mDiyo-ish...
Ok lol I have been playing around with the adv drawbridges for about a week now. I'm not to sure if the arrows in the GUI is met to place the block in that direction. Every time I pick a direction it clears it when I close GUI. I'm not to sure if I am using these right and for some reason I can't get them to place stairs the way I want them to they only place one way and I believe that's north. I need some insight on this item if anyone is willing to help.

I am glad there is a wiki, even if I now know enough about the mod not to need one. I'm the sort of guy who literally tries to read the entire wiki for a mod before even downloading it... That has led to several wasted days. I am working on my bad habit of wiki-engulfing, though, I am currently trying to play thaumcraft using only the thaumonomicon. It has been hard, and I have not been totally successful; some of the aspects required a look up, but it is a new and fun experience for me. Basically, how hard is it NOT to click the wiki link? Don't complain about something you aren't REQUIRED to use. Wiki-readers like myself will find a source of information besides a wiki, even if you try to get rid of it.
A book is not a wiki. The nature of a wiki is that lots of people can add to it, and combine their knowledge.
In-game books are horrible documentation for someone trying to decide whether to use the mod or not. If you are basically saying, "Download and install the mod before you understand what it does/how to use it", you have a problem.
Even vanilla minecraft relies on its wiki.
Mods that do not have clear and complete documentation in their OP are things that I can't stand. If they have a decent wiki in their OP, that's fine -- that's as good as, or probably better than, a static description that is three versions of the mod out-of-date.
Some mods seem to be all about being confusing and hard to figure out, under the guise of "this mod is for people who can think" -- mods like that *need* a wiki for people to clarify how to use it. (Sorry, RotaryCraft is the poster child of that. TiC is not nearly as complicated, but the combinatorial complexity of TiC is still at the spreadsheet aid level.)
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
... Ironically, in complete contrast to everything you just said, my FAVORITE thing in a mod is being complicated enough to need to spend a month figuring out. That's part of the reason why I love IC2 and all of it's addons; you can really spend a lot of time learning about each machine, as opposed to, say universal electricity, where it's basically: Make generator. Get power. Use power to power an ore doubler, conveyor belt, and a smelter. Maybe make power armor. In IC2, there are so many machines and things, and you have to try to get nano-armor to truly succeed. I like the challenge of a complex and confusing mod (It also allows me to do my favorite thing: try to teach my friends how the mod works).
I am glad there is a wiki, even if I now know enough about the mod not to need one. I'm the sort of guy who literally tries to read the entire wiki for a mod before even downloading it... Ahh, ThaumCraft I love that mod.. I also tried to get things done in that mod without the wiki :3 The in-game book for that one (the thaumonomicon) is good enough that all I needed the wiki for is a couple of the aspects.. Especially since some of them got changed in the latest update.
How would you build a Smeltery without the TConstruct books?
See, you would be amazed (and possibly mildly depressed) by the amount of people who, even with the books, can't figure out how to build a smeltery. Honestly, you should be grateful that people come to the wiki and we help them figure out stuff like that. Do you want them spamming this thread with "How do I make a tool?" or "What's better? Cobalt or Manyullyn?". Your issue earlier was that people reported bugs on the wiki instead of here. Well, when they do that it lets ThermX or I sift through them and figure out which bugs need to be reported, which are from modpacks (You would not believe how many posts we've gotten because of AoBT), and which are just people derpin' out. We're here to help, mD.
KillerKaneo: Yes, it's a free modifier on any battlesign you want.
Keybounce: You shouldn't rely on the wiki to decide whether you want to download it or not. That's like reading an entire encyclopedia before you decide to buy it... instead, use the images, videos, and descriptions on the first post to gather that information.
Vanilla minecraft doesn't actually rely on its wiki. You can find everything in the game with pure experimentation, crafting recipes included.
Master_Wight: Youtube seems to be well aware of all the people that can't build a Smeltery on their own as well. ^^;;
Fatal Crash when trying to craft the exo-armor. Happens every time.
Forge is the latest version, and the crash occurs even when Mantle and TiC are the only mods installed.
Lite loader is the only thing I'm unsure on.
I have gone into the config file and changed:
B:"Remove Vanilla GregTech Nerfs"=false
B:"Remove Vanilla Tool Effectiveness"=false
B:"Remove Vanilla Tool Recipes"=false
And they still have 2 uses before breaking. Maybe if I erase the config files and let it regen one (will have to change block ids back afterwards before starting server just copy it from client). This is from the tinkersworkshop file. Anyone have any thoughts?

Ahh, ThaumCraft I love that mod.. I also tried to get things done in that mod without the wiki :3 The in-game book for that one (the thaumonomicon) is good enough that all I needed the wiki for is a couple of the aspects.. Especially since some of them got changed in the latest update.
This is my number 1 mod
Keybounce: You shouldn't rely on the wiki to decide whether you want to download it or not. That's like reading an entire encyclopedia before you decide to buy it... instead, use the images, videos, and descriptions on the first post to gather that information.
Vanilla minecraft doesn't actually rely on its wiki. You can find everything in the game with pure experimentation, crafting recipes included.
Master_Wight: Youtube seems to be well aware of all the people that can't build a Smeltery on their own as well. ^^;;
