From the pictures, it looks like the shell is two blocks of obsidian thick. Can it be made smaller, or would that leave corner cracks exposed?
Yup, 2 blocks thick for small roids. 4 thick for mega roids.

I'm afraid not. Instability isn't well defined - it seems to change after the first visit to the age. Also, there would be no way to include instability from COG mystcraft symbols since only part of the config file would be loaded when the expression is evaluated.
Status update for the "Mystcraft ages assign hidden symbols when ore symbols are not specified" project:
I have two projects on my plate. The first is for a client, and has to be finished today.
The second -- unexpected when I gave today as a delivery estimate for the first beta -- is an update to 147 / forge 497.
Expect something probably saturday morning (maybe friday night ... don't count on it.)
I was hoping you had some way to turn horizontal veins into something that looked like a river, and then an air->lava substitute with a height limit would do the second. That would give you control over where the lava was, so you could then stick an ore deposit down around that lava.
To follow up on this: Will the following idea/trick work:
0. Normal lava is at 10.5 (puts lava lake surface at 11), normal tunnels put air at 11.5, sometimes 12.5. (I hope I have those numbers correct; if not, the rest will be off).
1. Replace all air and lava from 1 to 12.5 with stone.
2. Place air tunnels/"caves" down to cover the 7.5 to 12.5 range. Varying sizes. Most will have no forks; some will have a few forks. Some will be "large clouds" (will turn into pools with no runs); others will be "motherlodes" with veins (large pools with runs). Inclination would be fixed at 0 (flat; no vertical change).
3. Now run a substitute to turn air to lava from 1 to 10.5.
Does this work as expected?
If so, then this means that COG can tell where the bottom of the map lava is for placement of ores ...

True; after all, any mod/add-on, like COG, could adjust the instability. At best, you could determine the only "fixed" value -- the instability caused by bad writing / auto selection of symbols. Everything else is subject to alteration.

Ah, the "placeholder.txt" made me think it was a rogue file. In that case...
It has a syntax error in it then (I.e. when COG tries and reads it, it can't figure out what is going on).
XML can easily be broken by a simple misplaced character.
Here is what I suggest:
1. Rename your "placeholder.txt" to and xml, like "MyOwnConfigs.xml". This is not strictly required, but is a good first step.
2. Now, we can look at the error it gives:
Yes, I know that makes about as much sense as "General Protection Fault", but I'll help you out here.
We know from "lineNumber: 1; columnNumber: 3;" that the error is on the first line.
It might be a typo, or an XML element (that is one of those "<something> </something>" bits) that it doesn't understand (I.e. the "not well formed" error).
If you cannot see something wrong, you can post it here and I will try and help you.
No need, I solved my own problem by downgrading and using my old config. Thanks for trying to help though.

Is there a config option to disable the mystcraft symbol mechanics and just have the COG ores spawn in the ages like they used too?
I realize that some people want a harder game, but that is not the case on our server. I run a small family server and I would like to be able to increase the ore rates and frequencies while providing mystcraft age quarrying as apposed to tearing up the main world searching for a whole 10 iron or 6 copper. I imagine it would be different if I ran a larger server and could barter for resources from other players but sometimes you find yourself all alone and out of iron on our small server.
Also...not sure if its a bug, but when i run the wireframes when in a mystcraft age currently, there are NO deposits of anything. so apparently your mod is still converting the existing ores to stone but just not adding any which seems to negate ANY mining for anything that COG is handling in a mystcraft age.

When COG came out with support for Mystcraft ages, the default (no symbols) case was made "No ores, but reduce the instability". This ruins both backwards compatibility (old default was, I think, make the ages look like the overworld, however that was defined), and the "random ages are unstable" nature of Mystcraft.
This is why I'm writing config files to auto select a type of ore setting at random in these worlds.

Actually you can, use the '/cogPopulate [range in chunks]' command

Hi. My game crashed when it tried to launch with Forestry's Apatite Ore generation enabled. It was disabled by default by COG, too. Was that intended or is it a bug?
edit: if I leave Apatite Ore generation disabled, the game crashes still, but it gives me a Forge crash log instead. The other crash report was from COG.
Can anyone tell me what the cause of this crash is? Everything worked fine when I installed my mods.

Check to see if the IDs of COG are being overwritten by another mod.

COG is the last mod I had installed before the COG-related crashes. I'm using the ID Resolver mod for all my ID conflicts, and it never reported any issues when I installed COG, meaning that no overwriting ever occured. ID conflict isn't the problem. At least, I highly doubt it is... considering the fact that the ID Resolver mod never failed me before.
Fixed my problem, Xycraft was overwriting some of this mod's IDs.
I'm glad you fixed your problem. For the record: it had nothing to do with Xycraft, and COG doesn't have any "IDs" to overwrite. The error you reported is a known bug in the latest version that causes the options menu to crash if you don't have any display groups defined.

COG will automatically disable a mod ore if it detects that the ore block is not registered. That is why you got an error from COG when you forced it to be enabled. Make sure that everything works when COG is not installed. If that is the case, please post a copy of the Forge log.

I am completely struck stupid by this mod now. I haven't played minecraft in a while but just updated everything after about 7 months and this mods config is totally different. I would like to customize veins for each type of ore much like the old config used to be. Could someone please help me out on a starter template and how to get it to load? If you wish to help me assume you are speaking to an idiot because I am completely lost in .xml. I understand changing values and such but as for setting up the file I can't make it all connect in my brain to get it to work.

edit: if I leave Apatite Ore generation disabled, the game crashes still, but it gives me a Forge crash log instead. The other crash report was from COG.
Fixed my problem, Xycraft was overwriting some of this mod's IDs.
Check to see if the IDs of COG are being overwritten by another mod.

COG is the last mod I had installed before the COG-related crashes. I'm using the ID Resolver mod for all my ID conflicts, and it never reported any issues when I installed COG, meaning that no overwriting ever occured. ID conflict isn't the problem. At least, I highly doubt it is... considering the fact that the ID Resolver mod never failed me before.
COG will automatically disable a mod ore if it detects that the ore block is not registered. That is why you got an error from COG when you forced it to be enabled. Make sure that everything works when COG is not installed. If that is the case, please post a copy of the Forge log.
That's strange because when I removed Xycraft, it worked perfectly. Will have to see. If it's a known bug, then when will the fix be out?
