I resolved this by reinstalling the recommended version of Forge.
using 3.1 creates more of an issue for me given other mods (which won't be compatible if I use the ones that work for 3.1)
3.2 causes even more issues.
3.3 is what I'm attempting to use. I had it working. I had to reinstall.

Edit: I managed to fix this by changing the config file "ironchest.cfg" changing 502 to a number under 255.
I'm not using many addons but here's a list to compare. I changed the number to 201
255 being the max by default unless something gives a new max of 4000+ items? Which I still find hard to believe someone could actually use that many mods.
IC2 - Advance machines, Nuke control, compact solars
BC - Core, builders, energy, factroy, transport silicon, logistic pipes*, sneaky pipes (love me some sandy pipes)*
Redpower - All the pr5b2
Railcraft + steve's carts
* - I don't think they use item id's
CPW the Sphax addon link is broken and has been for a few months, the sphax addon project was moved to the official BDCraft website thus any old links are broken so this is the new version on the new forums http://www.bdcraft.n...-timmie-edition
This is a remake of Hanfox's and Pcmaster160's addon and is now made by Timmie3054
are any detailed installation instructions? just sticking it in the mods folder is not working for me. the game crashes with an array out of bounds exception 502 error. the mods i am using are Simple Ores, Thaumcraft 2, EE2, NEI, SPC, Portal Gun, and Ores Drop More. digging in the rar file i find a meta-inf folder, is that neccesary to the mod?
Deleting the meta-inf file inside the ironchest zip does nothing and you'll still get the error.
Someone posted right after you that they reinstalled the recommended forge client to the jar. Did this work for you?
I'm having a bit of a problem. I have inficraft installed as well as this and the chest upgrades just so happen to be in the middle of inficrafts tools. I dont mind losing some tools for the chest upgrades but that's not happening. The chest upgrade takes over the item ID but the recipe is staying the same. Meaning that it's still an inficraft tool! I've tried changing the Item ID of the chest upgrades to a different one but the Item ID's are always around 200 off what i've typed in and are totally the wrong recipe. It only seems to happen with the copper to Iron chest though, the rest are ok and are craftable even though NEI no longer recognizes them. Anyone else get that problem or can recreate it?
EDIT: The copper to silver chest is off too actually but everything else is ok
I ran into the exact same problem, using InfiCraft and many other mods (40+). To make IronChests compatible I merely changed versions (didn't want to, but it worked!) back to 3.4.2, and I switched the blockid of the ironchests to 177.
A bunch of people have complained about 502 being a bad number. Sorry, a test build using a high block ID escaped. If you're using e
3.3.7 forge you have to change the config for the block to less than 256.. the nei problem is because neither doesn't understand forge ore dictionary recipes. They're there just nei won't show them...
If you upgrade to latest forge and neither I believe these problems are gone. Certainly the block one is...

Wonderful mod, been using an older version for some time now, with no problems. However I'm hitting a serious problem with the latest version, mod_ironchests-client-3.6.1.34 + the recommended Forge build minecraftforge-client-3.3.8.152 (no other mods installed): whenever I place an item in a crystal chest, an "invalid operation" error occurs repeatedly:

and the frame rate drops to 9 - 10 fps. The game is nearly unplayable due to this lag when I'm near a crystal chest. Occurs on both SMP and SSP. Full log: https://gist.github.com/3067943 . Any idea what could be causing this?

I had the same error so I backed down to version 3.3.1.22 just so I could address my issues with wireless redstone.
We're getting an issue with about 10 crystal chests with lots of few items.. you mat want to only have it render 1 of each of the items displayed instead of piles. (yes I know the piles look cool, but it is the cause of render issues)
Another issues I seem to be encountering; nasty crash when upgrading from a normal to iron chest:
Crash error from stack trace as minecraft simply gets the black "saving chunks" screen.

New version 3.7 uploaded. With some help from mushroom hostage aka exphc I think we might have it sorted now. Additionally fixed the recipe problem (hence the 3.7 change) and offer a config item that should disable the render caching (so frame rate will be slightly lower but may assist stability for those environments where their GL has a problem with the display list caching).
Please try it and let me know how it works, especially those of you with problems of various kinds.

If you upgrade to latest forge and neither I believe these problems are gone. Certainly the block one is...
