Hey wacko, if you want to feature my showcase of SWM on the forum post go ahead!
Also,If need a video of AWM with better explanation I would be happy to make one!
You should be bugging Notch. As I've said twice now, rain and snow are identical as far as Minecraft is concerned. There is no isSnowing, only isRaining.
But you could also ask on MAtmos to add a "current biome temp" check, and if the biome says it's cold (which is also what determines if the "rain" acts like snow), then have snow sounds instead of rain.
Anyway, I tried adding the first component of Advanced Winter Mode today (crafting recipes for topSnow and Ice using ModLoader), and MCP exploded on me. I haven't seen that many compile errors since Roblox changed their global-variable system. (Yeah, I admit, I used to play Roblox. Most of my programming experience comes from my "Roblox Lyoko" project.)
(Old post is old, but I have to say this)
YOU created the lyoko project? zomg. u r epic. Downloading this mod for sure now.
just added the AWM to my game, and i found this patch of broken area.
the snow is THERE, just not rendering, and exiting the game and re-entering does not affect it
edit: placing something makes a part of the area show up, while removing said something causes it to vanish again
I've observed this also, and developed a few reproduction theories.
My observations are these:
- Occurs at Y=65 (Or basically, 1/2 your max height +1, as my height-mod worlds all have this issue at their midway points)
- Only occurs if Y=65 (Or your 1/2 point +1) is the highest block in the chunk.
If no block is higher than 65, any block that is at level 65 will have no visible snow. Any block below this level will have snow. The snow is THERE, you can mine it, but it is not visible. As soon as you place a block, raising the highest point to 64+1 or higher, the snow is revealed. Removing this block so that the highest block is 64, or digging down so that there are points lower than 64 on the surface, does not reveal the snow.
Edit: Just opened another new world, issue occurs at Y=65, not 64. On my 256 world, it shows up at 129.
I'm betting he'd end up making more if he put up a donate button. You really don't get much from adfly for the aggravation it inflicts.
I'm in for $5 should a way to donate appear. A small price to pay for so much snowy goodness. Who's with me?
From what I've heard, Adcraft > Adfly. The problem is, neither service lets you sign up without an existing Paypal account (at least that's what I was told), and both prevent adblock users from signing up as well. The fix to problem 1 would be "just sign up for Paypal", right? Well, I'm under 21, and apparently the only way I can sign up for Paypal as a minor is to have an existing bank account (and not a joint account with my parents). And every single bank in my state has a $250 minimum opening deposit, which is too high for an unemployed college student. So it's all one big pile of Nethercoal for me. But if all three companies' (and banks') policies allowed me to sign up right now, I'd do what Risugami did on the ModLoader thread: side-by-side Adcraft (not adfly) and direct-link downloads, and a donate button.
you may want to use imageshack instead of photobucket. just saying :smile.gif:
I know. One week after starting the thread, "Warning: Your Photobucket account is about to run out of bandwidth!" And the day after the Advanced mod went up, "You are out of bandwidth!". I've been using Twitpic for my WIP screenshots (tweet and forum-post with one upload), but the small size is too small. I'll probably just put future pics on Dropbox.

Yup, another Blame Notch bug. It's easy to tell there's snow there, the grass it's on is still snowy sidegrass.
i have noticed that bug too on 1 of my houes a part of the top of my roof is snowed but not visible :sad.gif: if i use the advanced 1 but i use the simple 1 because i find the advanced 1 is a litle too buggy for my game its slows down it a litle bit. (if pointing to a snow block a black selecting window coms arround it but now it flashes from normal to slab format and if you have snow layer in inventory it schanges as well and thats a litle bit anoying i find but i dont know its too for others)
and on fence some snow is grey but i saw the same bug in your video
and if i may say i dont like that the snow build up it makes it not flat maybe you can make a option in the config file to turn that off for people who like it to be flat (on 1 block not everywhere dont think i mean to get a world completely flat)
that are some bugs i find and a idea for the future an option and maybe you can make a option thing whit some mod like giuapi
it just a idea
i want only to help you know if you need help finding bugs i am great in it they asking my kind of people for testing games and programs to find them.
ps. the bugs stay after you deinstalled the mod then the snow is the same not flat like if the mod is installed + the snow layer in the inventory still flashes as well like in the world too but you can fix it (with MCedit) if you remove the snow and ice from the chunk who are be snowed on whit the mod so no problem
hopefully this bugs are fixed soon because a game with bugs is not so good (is not meaned bad if you think it if you read 1 of my posts)
have a nice day and holidays
*Invisible snow: Same bug as above if your house roof is at exactly y=65.
*Flickering selection boxes: Acknowledged before, Blame Notch.
*Ability to turn off varying snow thickness: A bit complicated since the snow thickness is determined by metadata (as it is in vanilla, explaining the varying-thicknessed snow even after uninstalling), but I could add a toggle to the main mod class and wrap every world.setBlockMetadataWithNotify() in an if(mod_AdvancedWinterMode.snowThicknessEnabled) check.
Or, combining with Dry_Taste's idea, an integer setting to determine the max snow height (from 0 (default) to 15 (max allowed by metadata), the mod currently has the limit hardcoded at 7). This would actually be slightly easier to implement than a "have varying snow level or not" switch.
*GuiAPI: Brought up before, and I did consider it, but it's another API to figure out, and I already have a config file via ModLoader (.minecraft\config\mod_AdvancedWinterMode.cfg), where any and all toggles are accessible. The only downside of this is that you have to close Minecraft to change settings...
And two other ideas I had, but will do later (need to catch up on my personal life, not gonna try to add more features until after Minecraft 1.1.0 releases):
*Reduced walking speed (like Soul Sand but more subtle) in snow of thickness 6 or higher. Toggleable.
*When being snowed on (actually visible to the sky, not just standing on a snow block), if the player isn't wearing some kind of leather (not iron/gold/diamond) armor, have frostbite in the form of increased food exhaustion. Probably one point of exhaustionLevel every four seconds (so half as slow as Food Poisoning, and stops instantly when you get under cover or put on some leather armor). Also toggleable, may even be exclusive to a "Realism" extension I had been thinking about...

Hey, so Im really interested in this mod and I have run into a problem and i was wondering if someone could help out... So im pretty certain ive installed the mod right, copied all the .class files into minecraft.jar directly, deleted meta-inf and then went to start up the game. After I click login on the launcher, it shows a quick update screen followed by a black screen that just stays there and doesnt do anything. I have no other mods and from what ive heard tis mod already has very minimal mod conflicts as it is so thats definitely not a problem for me so im not sure as to what it could be.

Well that's certainly enough for a telepath to figure out your problem.
Do we have any telepaths in the thread?
(gonna need modloader.txt if you use that, or run it from the console and post that, in spoiler tags)
How come I've never seen the snow get higher than a stone slab, only half the height?
It's only 3 out of the 6 layers of snow.
I changed the metadata-based render so it increments by 1/16ths instead of 1/8ths. When it's slab-sized in the mod, it's actually metadata 7, which would be a full-block-size lump of snow in vanilla. This way the growth looks more smooth. In a later update I'll make the max level customizable, up to and including 15 (the highest metadata can go, and it'll be a full-block-size).
I seem unable to grow trees from saplings without bonemeal and even that doesn't work 100%
Making toe survival island I'm doing harder.
Not sure why either of them do that, I didn't touch any of those classes. Farmland when being rained/snowed on is supposed to become hydrated, not revert to dirt. As for trees, they're supposed to be unaffected by snow period.

have you seen Scokeev9's "Better Winters" mod? it has the "growing snow" and does not have a flickering hit box. Here, maybe you could ask him how he got it to not flicker.
Yeah, I knew about Better Winters, and tried it back in 1.6.6 (it REALLY didn't like MCExtended or BetterThanWolves then). In fact, the varying-thickness snow was kind of the inspiration for my mod, mainly because I hadn't seen Better Winters updated for a while (in reality, it's the mod list on the wiki that's hardly ever up-to-date).
And I know why it's flickering, but not how to fix it. During the prototype stage of Advanced Winter Mode, when I was trying to figure out the "snow on more blocks" part, the custom-render-bounds stuff was directly in BlockSnow.class. It limited me to one setBlockBounds() per case, but it didn't flicker even with dynamic thickness (the hitbox was still offset for snow-on-slab though). When Risugami told me how to make the custom snow render (BaseMod.RenderWorldBlock), that's when the flickering happened. It's because, AFAIK, RenderWorldBlock and other BaseMod render functions are intended only for new blocks added by a mod, not to override the render definitions of a vanilla block. So I think the flickering is caused by Minecraft being confused with having both the base BlockSnow render defined in RenderBlocks, and my custom renders in mod_AdvancedWinterMode. But like I said, I have no idea how to fix it, or even what class defines/controls the selection box...

Okay, progress update. I tried making the max snow height configurable, and it derped (it set max snow height to five despite what the config file was set to). So I reverted that, and came up with a compromise: thinSnow, a new config toggle (boolean). When enabled, you get the "each level of snow is 1/16th block, max height is singleslab" of the current AWM 1.0. Disable it, and it goes to the vanilla height behavior (each stage is 1/8th block, max level is a full block). This doesn't change the actual snow behavior, just how it renders. Because of that, you can change it at any time to double the snow thickness or cut it in half.
Unfortunately, I still have no clue about the flickering selection box or how to fix freezeAllTheBiomes toggleability (I'll try to fix the latter before I release this minor update, but other than that no new features until Minecraft 1.1 releases).

Sorry, I forgot to make it explicit that Advanced Winter Mode needs ModLoader. Updating the OP now...
