Just in case you didn't know, popcorn smelting refers to how you used to smelt objects, throwing them into a fire or into lava. -baeshra
This mod was originally made for the request by baeshra Here: Popcorn Smelting Request [Mod last updated: 02/14/12] [News: 02/14/12] Finally ready to make this mod more public. This is my first mod and first experience with Java. I intend to expand it quite a bit. So tell me what you think and check out my blog (click the blue W below) if you like. [Features]
Default Block ID's: 200,201
Toss an item onto these blocks and they will catch it and begin to smelt it.
If you have instant mode on (in the config file) it will immediately smelt the item and toss it out.
Without instant: Once the item burns away the smelted item will pop out.
Direct rain will prevent items from smelting. The item will stay in the table (if there is room) until the rain stops, at which point smelting will resume.
If you or another entity jump on the top of the table you will be set on fire and tossed off the table.
If you want something added, post it, and I'll consider it.
[Purpose] Popcorn Smelting is faster and easier than furnace smelting. This is for mid to late game players who need to process large amounts of items but don't want to be bogged down by the speed of the normal furnace and feel that mod furnaces are fast but not enough. If you currently use multiple furnaces to process items, this mod is for you.

Version 1.0.0 (Full Release)-
*Added the enchanted fire cauldron, a cheaper but more random popcorn smelting block.
*Several optimizations.
*New fancy config file.
*Secondary fuel system.
*Smelting table recipe now uses enchanted fire cauldron.
*Lots of stuff I forgot.
*First "Full" release.
[Older Changes]
Version 2.3 Beta-
*Added Smelting Table to Creative Mode GUI.
*Fixed several bugs involving the burning block above the table including all duplication bugs involving it.
*Fixed smelting of metadata items
*Added Forge support
*Added charcoal recipes
*Added nether brick recipes
*Fixed "chaining" - items launched from one table can now be picked up from another table.
*Smelting table will now face you when you place it and will launch items toward the grated side in any orientation.
*There is now a 5% chance of generating the fire item when you smelt a smeltable item.
*Several smoother transitions between on/off states involving rain.
*Table will no longer work when there is a block directly above it.
*Added a fuel system, place a lava bucket in the top right most box.
-The table can hold up to 6 buckets of lava as well as a "7th" that is currently burning.
-Fuel is burned per item. Each bucket can burn 32 items. If you smelt 4 items at a time,
4 units of fuel will be used up per cycle.
*Each table is now its own block (before multiple tables caused issues). You can now use multiple
tables without issues.
*When broken, the table will now drop its inventory. Before, the inventory was also destroyed.
-(All fuel will be lost however)
Version 2.0 Beta-
*Added Smelting Table GUI
*Smelting Table now has 4 inventory slots.
Item's can be tossed on top or placed directly into its inventory.
*Smelting now occurs at fixed intervals as long as items are inside the table.
-*Instant Mode smelting is still instant, you won't even notice the items go into the table.
Smelting stacks in instant mode will give you the entire stack back smelted.
-*At the end of each smelting cycle 1 item in each slot will be smelted, meaning
if you have a stack of 64, splitting it into 4 stacks of 16 and putting them all in
the table is to your advantage.
*Particle effects now use the correct display function and are much slower and less sporadic.
+Bug Fixes+
*Version number is incorrect in Modloader output. Will not affect gameplay at all.
-Bugs-
*If you somehow manage to overload the inventory of the table, any additional items you
attempt to add will simply disappear.
*Rare duplication bug if there is a block burning on the table and you save/quit and rejoin world.
*Non-smeltable items burn away instantly and abruptly.
Version 1.2 Beta-
*Added particle effects.
-*Flames will emit from the top when items are on the table.
-*If it is raining on the table, smoke will emit along with the flames.
Smelting will resume when the rain stops (unless the item degrades and disappears before then).
You will not (and will never in the future) be able to pick up items in mid-smelting off the table.
This is to prevent a whole bunch of bugs and duplication glitches.
*Added new config option- Instant mode
-*In instant mode items will be smelted instantly (as the name implies).
If you want instant mode, set it in the config file. It is off by default.
-Bugs-
*Version number is incorrect in Modloader output. Will not affect gameplay at all.
Version 1.1 Beta-
*Direct update to Minecraft 1.0.0.
-Bugs-
*None found so far.
Version 1.0 Beta-
*Textures changed.
*Recipe updated.
*Smelted items now pop out after the original item has burned away.
*Table now gives off a light level of 7.
*When table becomes wet (in water or rain) it will become cobblestone.
*Minor bounding box issues fixed.
+Bug Fixes+
*Items duplicate indefinitely when wet.
-Bugs-
*None found so far.
Version 1.0 Alpha-
*First release.
-Bugs-
*Items duplicate indefinitely when wet.
[Compatibility] Compatible (will run) with everything, but if you attempt to pick up the output items by any other means than walking over them (i.e. buildcraft pipe) it will most likely register as a single item in the item stack although there may be multiple. This is a bug I'll be looking into fixing.
So, tell me what you think. It's my first mod AND first experience with Java. Post any suggestions, helpful hints, etc. It's all appreciated *if* it's constructive. Please no 1-line "this sucks" comments.

Please download and check it out, if there are no glaring bugs with this version I'll update to 1.0.0.
Also please vote in the polls, your feedback will impact the future of this mod greatly. I have some ideas I want to implement for my personal use, but I'd like to see what the community wants.
sorry for not making the video. i lost the thread. i guess that is why its important to make sure you bookmark these things. i try to work on it asap. maybe on official 1.0 release?
also an idea. make the recipe without a bucket of lava. put the lava in after the furnace is made, and have the lava cool off into obsidian after a certain number of item smelted. the obsidian can be mined out of the furnace and can produce an obsidian block, after which it can be refilled with lava

Had some college stuff to do this week, working on a 1.0.0 release now.

I'll definitely have some sort of fuel system eventually, and that sounds like a good idea, but it will have to come after I learn damage values and or different block states. For now I'll just release a 1.0.0 compatible version today with some very minor changes.
Directly updated to 1.0.0, that means nothing new besides the fact that it now works in the most current version. Those who were waiting for it to update please enjoy!

Thanks! I'm hoping for a full release next weekend, for now I've polished up a few things. For those who want an extremely fast smelting experience I've allowed you to re-enable instant smelting in the config. In the future this will also bypass the fuel system. This is for those not wanting to deal with fueling anything and just want things smelted fast. New version uploaded:

You could make this so that it only works with ores, sand and cobble, plus, food, rotten flesh and wooden items (sticks, wood, wooden planks, fences, etc.) come out as charcoal.
I want to turn on instant mode, but I can't find the config file. What's it called?
It should be located in the config folder of your Minecraft directory under the name "mod_SmeltingTable.cfg". Open it in any text editor and the contents should be something like this:
#
#Wed Dec 21
Instant_Smelting=false
BlockID=255
Just replace "false" with "true" where it says "Instant_Smelting".
Could we possibly see a way for it to smelt a STACK of items? Making stone bricks is annoying when I have to toss each individual piece of cobblestone onto the table.

I agree completely, that is annoying. This is absolutely going to be a feature, in fact it's kind of a bug that it doesn't work that way already since when I originally wrote the code for it I wrote it in such a way that it should have worked. I'm overhauling the code anyway now that I've studied Java some, so that should be nice and fixed for the next version.
Also, something I noticed, it seems to have problems with smelting items using that use the forge dictionary (as this mod does not use forge...yet). I have a few API's to look into, but definitely not until after I"m done applying to college.
Just wanted to give a quick mini-update on my status. My 2-year old Toshiba laptop's wifi card is on the way out and every so often will stop being recognized by my laptop thus shutting down my internet capabilities. Starting up Eclipse for some reason [i]always[/i] disconnects my wifi when I start it up, and being a new modder I need to look up a lot of things to know how to do them. This is quite disabling, but I just wanted people to know I'm still working on the mod, it's just taking a bit longer than expected. My solution so far is to grab down as many tutorials as I can before the internet disappears and then advancing as much as possible in the mod.
As soon as I get the following to work, I'll post an update: *Ability to process stacks [Stacks process perfectly] *Optimized smelting time control using the furnace's timing system. [I use my own timing system, but I can control smelting time perfectly now.] *Some sort of GUI, no fuel yet. [Got a GUI to appear on activation :biggrin.gif:, and now it's custom and works perfectly] *Major code optimization I managed to do everything in a non-hackish way this time (I think). Should run smoother.
