Yeah that's simple, until some determined sob start port scanning the hostname, 65k ports ain't that much.
example:
$ nmap -p- some-minecraft-server.tld
Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2012-05-01 15:35 GMT
Nmap scan report for some-minecraft-server.tld (1.3.3.7)
Host is up (0.0010s latency).

Good mod and all, but I don't get the point of it. So it's a mod that prevents your little brother from joining your server when he looks over your shoulder?
I think it is for people who make videos and don't wants to show ips
I threw together a version for 1.3.1, you can get it here: Link Removed ... the next version of Minecraft will have this type of feature built in
I'm not exactly sure which version you made, but I made both available here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1767088/IpHider.zip
If anyone has any requests (like hiding the server MOTD or tweaking it a bit more), please ask. If people want (and if TheEpicGamerGuy is okay with it), I could take over this project.

So epicgamer when do you think this will be updated now with mcp being out, i need it for my videos that i'm going to do.
Hey there. I'm TheEpicGamerGuy's partner in crime (On Youtube :P) I've been meaning to ask him when he plans on updating the mod, because I know he will soon. He just starting school this week, so he's a little busy at the moment, but I'll let him know to do it this weekend when I talk to him. I'll let you know when for sure! \m/

It's very helpful for streamers since it can help to prevent DDoS attacks. For example, if you are hosting a server from your network while livestreaming, it makes it that much harder for hackers to obtain your IP and knock you offline

Thanks for the quick update link. I'll ask TEGG later this weekend when I talk to him if he would want to pass on the torch of the mod, I think he'll want to stay in control of this though
even if there's a whitelist, all you need is the IP adress to DDoS it which gives the DoS'er access to everything connected to it.
Worse yet, a server like Mindcrack (which runs the vanilla software, and is played on by many popular Youtubers) could be shut down by a single bad packet sent by a malicious user.

I'd like to continue this project myself, but you are more than welcome to make a more advanced version of the mod. :-)

Why can't I have more than 1 link in my signature?

Signaturecraft is back!@SigCraft
A version that hides MOTD would be great.

Mod has now been updated to 1.3.1
Well then don't use it when 1.3.2 hits. It's been for 1.8 through 1.3.1.
Why is it no longer needed? i can't find any option for it in vanilla minecraft.I just facepalmed myself. WHY DID NO-ONE MENTION IT WAS IN THE OPTIONS.TXT?
Gah. I've been searching for it for almost 2 days.
