If someone were to, hypothetically, use Hemp in a mod, would you dip them in boiling Companion Cube juice?
Gods no. Man, I never go after anyone for having similar ideas to my own (systematically ripping off the mod in feature after feature is another matter). Absolutely tons of ideas have filtered into other mods (and even vanilla) over the course of BTW's development.
So yeah man, don't sweat it. People love to blow what I've said way out of proportion, so best not to listen to rumors in that regard.
tldr : how do you people get from iron to diamond, and how long would you say it takes you ?
It took me several RL days before I was able to find a cave that went deep enough for me to find diamonds. It was two in-game days after that that I was able to actually craft a diamond pickaxe. (A change that's quite unique I think.)
I think it was about 10 hours of playing time in total from nothing to a diamond pickaxe.

oh wow, hc spawn can't be toggled off anymore ?
I guess that takes my hopes of ever again achieving something in that mod near absolute zero once I update it...
When you die, your stuff remains in the world. Build roads to your spawn point, so later you can find your old bases again with compasses.
Okay, well, I have a question about the progression in BTW : do you effectively have to either
- find a natural cave that will go deep enough to let you access diamond on its walls
- find a populated village in hope of trading a diamond pickaxe
?
The first one only. Villages no longer trade any equipment other than iron.
Well, I did get to the point of making my iron pickaxe, tried tunneling down, only to find out stratification wouldn't let me.
That's when I realized that, unless I missing something, I would have to explore a cave in hope that it would end up deep enough, and still in hope, that it would have diamond in its walls if I ever wanted to go to the nether to a least get something to fire a cauldron.
Hardcore Stratification prevents branch mining early in the game, to encourage caving or digging through the surface.
tldr : how do you people get from iron to diamond, and how long would you say it takes you ?
It takes a good deal of work, time, and effort to do so safely. Instead of rushing to the end of the tech tree, I suggest taking the time to enjoy where you're at instead of rushing right to the end.
Absolutely loving where this mod is going! That temptation to turn off HC spawn always seemed to be there whilst playing co-op.
I honestly didn't know how team mechanics could have gone but I'm glad you came up with another solution that adds to the gameplay.
Can someone help me, I recently updated to the latest version of this mod and i went to make a new world and it won't load past "building terrain". I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling with a fresh .jar file, and it still won't load.
You don't need a cave that extends from surface to the bottom strata. What you need is a cave that extends from the bottom level you can mine down to, to the bottom strata.
The way I generally play it, is that I settle a base where I spawn, dug into the earth. At night, after I've cleared out a basic area, I mine stone by digging a stairway downwards a bit at a time. With stone picks, this means I have to stop when I hit the 2nd strata.
During the day, I explore surface caves for iron and such. If that doesn't net me enough, I start mining atop the surface of the 1st strata layer, listening for cave and mob sounds. If I hear any, then I start digging a tunnel in that direction and attempt to intersect with a cave. Note also that at this depth, digging out any dirt you come across is a good way to expose a lot of stone and potential iron and coal deposits, as well as entrances into caves (this applies at all layers as well...dirt is easy to clear out and is potentially hiding ores).
After I get myself my iron pick, I continue digging my staircase downwards through the 2nd strata until I hit the bottom one. I once again repeat my cave finding technique, mining right on top of the layer, and listening for cave sounds. Chances are, if you hit a cave right on top of the strata layer you're trying to get into, it'll take you down into it.
I'm not even sure I have *ever* gone all the way down through a surface level cave to hit the bottom, although I've played through many restarts and gotten down into the bottom layer in a good number of them. It's never been an issue for me doing the above.
Remember, that just because stratification makes caving more valuable, doesn't mean that mining doesn't have its uses. A combination of both will probably serve you best. Everybody has seen through the MC world at one point or another, and it looks like a bloody ant-hill underground. Failing all else, if you mine in a straight line long enough, you're bound to hit a cave.

How are you installing it?
If you are installing other mods with this, that will likely be the cause of your issues. This mod is literally incompatible with almost every other mod out there. (With the exception of some minor mods that only modify base classes or BTW add-ons found here)
Also, do not install ModLoader. Better Than Wolves no longer uses it.

This is an image. Images need to be either looked at or poked. I'd recommend poking it.
Having read the new changes to HC spawn this morning, I wasn't quite sure what to think about it and decided to wait a while before forming any kind of opinion. Seeing as I don't play co-op, this doesn't affect me too much, but I thought about it and finally had a thought.
Although it's expected the initial reaction would be a knee-jerk negative, this adds meaning not only to death, but also to the partnership. Essentially, time the team spends together becomes a resource in and of itself. While together you gain increased productivity at the price of increased food cost, and later can use the tech tree to increase that productive time together between deaths. It also provides the joy of being wrenched apart from each other, and a new joy upon seeing each other again. Considering in reality, once you lose someone they're gone forever, you really should be taking that extra step to ensure each others' survival in-game as well. Now, not to say that this is an argument for "realism", but rather, adds a sense of emotional loss as well when your partner dies, and survivor's guilt motivating you to use your superior place in the tech tree to bring them back. This is far better than a simple suicide pact where one party dies and the rest all drop dead to follow.
Sorry if this is a really stupid questions but how is everyone using this mod? Have they not upgraded to 1.6.2 or something?
I hate to double-post, but, there's also steps to downgrade to 1.5.2 using the 1.6 launcher and install BTW on there, although it's far more confusing.
Okay, after looking at this mod for a while, I decided I wanted a break from my normal world and I've decided to give this a try. I'm on Day 4, and my overall impression thus far?
Oh god don't kill me please!
I've kind of got myself a mudhole home and I've sort of got wood and stone evened out so I don't run out of either, but now I'm trying to do something about coal, iron, and food - and all three are proving incredibly difficult, since I can't do normal mining (I have a single torch, and it's keeping my mudhole safe), I can't wander around at night (a stone axe does not a good weapon make), and all I'm finding is more stone. That said, I am having fun with it.

Yup, its stupid
if you had read back a couple pages, you would have seen where Flowerchild said he would NOT discuss the subject
(and you can see in the first post.. and at the top of your browser bar where it says 1.5.2 (which would be your first clue))
No reason to be a such a virgin about it. I'm new to this minecraft modding stuff.
virgin huh?
he isnt being a 'virgin'
its not about how new you are to modding.. its about the basic clues available to you that says that you didnt bother to read
Has something been said about changing this mod so it IS compatible with other mods? I know it is possible and I would love this to go along with my other mods.

Anything's possible. Why would he put a lot of effort into changing the mod and not adding cool stuff so that people can ruin it by adding inferior mods to it. Seems pretty dumb to me.

Yup. 2 years of many somethings were said. The short version can be summed up as "no".
