I don't think this lame old laptop (l.o.l.) can take a video card. It came with an integrated graphics chip (aka it's a cheap p.o.s.)
If I had that kind of money, I'd rather buy a lame new laptop (l.n.l.?). And indeed I'm saving up whats left over after paying the bills to buy a new p.o.s. for xmas.

I tried a souldsand filter in the hopper then put a second hopper two blocks downstream without a filter.
The next time mobs came through, I watched them get chopped up by the saw, watched their drops flow to the downstream hopper and heard the pips as they fell in. I did not hear any pips of orbs falling through the soulsand filtered hopper. I went to that hopper and mouse-over'd all the empty boxes but no mouse-over labels appeared. I then powered that hopper with an axel/gearbox extension. No change.
Thanks for your efforts anyway, I appreciate the attempt. But I'll just wait till a future fix and am in no hurry.
At this point, I am content to go make a blaze xp trap. Actually I'm looking forward to it. A version with detector blocks and blockdispensers should be interesting.
Meanwhile, here's a video of my windmill, Built in the style of La Mancha Spain windmills.

I do believe there's a workaround for this that can be found over on the BTW forums. The problem is that both BTW and Optifine modify EntityLiving, which I believe is only used by Optifine for random mob textures.
Anyways, check on the tech-support forum over there. I believe there's a way to disable the above functionality in optifine, then install the appropriate BTW files.
There is unlikely to be any other additional fix forthcoming, so I'd just try to figure it out now in your shoes. It's not just the Dragon Orbs that are disabled in this way, and the other functionality involved will be rather crucial to progressing over the next few releases.
Yeah, I have noticed other things that happen when I install Optifine with Better than Wolves. Animations such as eating, explosions (some of them, not from creepers it seems) and some texture glitches. Battleaxes also do not appear, and if I try to craft one, I get a normal Steel Axe instead. Really weird, but right now I can deal with everything of this, so I'm not concerned as of yet.
This mod is just FANTASTIC! Also, while reading though the beginning pages of the thread I noticed you said something about Steam Engines, so I must assume with the "A New Age" age including steel there will eventually come Boilers that can provide power when filled with water and placed over a lit Habachi, and maybe Blast Furnaces which require Habachis under them and mechanical power, and they act like your original idea for the Cauldron e.g: They are mass smelters.
(Also maybe you could make it so that wolves can fall into hoppers and come out as Companion Cubes, that would be neat too)

That was a long time ago, the new age is here, and not steam-powered. In fact, it seems that we are moving into the XP-powered age. But that's just my take on the new updates.
As for your second suggestion, that would make the creation of companion cubes too easy.
As for your other suggestion,

I am chagrined to realise I missed that discussion thread during my search. Thanks for pointing the way.
It works now. I can see and use dragon orbs.
Its a kind of compromise. Now I can't use optifine's zoom and the lag spikes have increased, though not as bad as vanilla.
It's bearable.
So with the upcoming merge of singleplayer and multiplayer, does that mean this mod will become multiplayer compatible? Or should we stay away from the /publish command?

Oh and just donated, Thanks for the awesome mod!
Yes, it will become SMP compatible. However, we have no gaurantee that it will be with the 1.3 release.
Flowerchild said himself he would be extremely surprised if it takes less than 40 hours to rewrite/refactor/edit the BTW code for the new release.
Yeah, the upcoming client/server merger is what I've been waiting on to port BTW over to SMP. Notch first mentioned they were going to do this many months ago, at which point I decided that I would wait on it to avoid having to do a lot of work twice.
But, as mentioned above, it's going to be a huge job, so I'm going to ask that people be patient once 1.3 comes out. I also *may* first release a single-player only 1.3 version so that people can continue playing their worlds while I work on testing the SMP port. I will have to see the code first though before making that decision.

Thanks for clearing that up, minecraft just isn't the same without this gem of a mod installed!
I think BTW SMP is going to be a very... weird experience. Fun, but anarchy play will probably industrialize and then apocalypse the world in a day. Anyone who enters the world after a day is gonna find the world stripmined and without trees, all animals dead and huge gaps in the ground from explosive traps.
Anyway, with the upcoming features, and SMP, Christmas is gonna be early this year!
I NEED SOME HELP!!!!!!!!
I have been trying to collect dung, so I have been feeding wolves and following them until they poop dung, but I end up waiting like 15-20 minutes, and there is still nothing. Do wolves only poop dug on full health? I just want to know how to get dung easily, and how to even get dung in the first place, because i ended up feeding 1 wolf like 10 chickens. I need the leather to make glue to make a water wheel. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off, wolves poop at random intervals. They poop more frequently in dark areas, so place your wolves in a pitch black room or the like. To prevent monster spawning, use glass for the floor, but don't use half slabs, as they need an empty block next to them to poop. as far as full health goes, i'm not sure, but if they're whining it's probably best to feed them until they shut up and bark instead. (feed them by dropping the food near them, so they pick it up themselves. feeding them by hand is going to put them in breeding mode.)
If you do that, then your wolves should poop, generally within 5-10 minutes. You can tell if they've pooped if your formerly barking dogs start whining again instead. (they're hungry after pooping.)

That usually has to do with using an out of date config file that has both the Battle Axe and Refined Axe assigned to the same item ID.

Thanks man
well really i was just wondering if there would be anything new or if the current BTW was everything it was going to become.
Oh.
Oh believe me.
There's new stuff coming.
This kitten is traumatized by stupid. Please stop abusing the kitten.

Including legendary weapon drops and hats.
