Large ingame render of my terrain so far (rightclick + view image for full size). Based off heavily edited NASA heightmap data, guess where this is!
Still need to work on some bo2 trees to fill in the river delta, some swamp trees for the edges of the lagoons and some mangroves of something for the shoreline before a final export. Most of the water level is 64, and the heighest point is about 240 to allow trees to grow. After export I'm going to remove all the dirt, so the mountans will be a lot more rugged looking than they are now. Heres a link to a fullsize render (warning, about 20kx20k pixels, pretty big) uploaded on my google docs, no preview available but it should be downloadable (just an image as of now), ill work on getting a world download upon completion. If anyone is any good with bo2 objects tho, would love some help.

hey man if you want to make an awesome render of the map i suggest mcmapDZ
and also how did you get BO2 files to work i cant get them to work
and also look here for some nice BO2 files
Ah yes, Phoenix Terrain mod, great site for BO2 files.
If anyone is wondering, im pretty sure this is the program to make bo2 files. http://faskerstudio.com/minecraft/BBOB/
I am not exactly expecting a reply to this, but if someone is very talented and, more importantly, enjoys using this program, I would like to propose a request.
I am currently in the process of writing a Minecraft based short story/novella titles "Stories of War". To compliment the novella, I have came up with the idea to build the countries, cities and unknown lands mentioned throughout the stories. The detailed luxurious cities described will take MANY, slaving, hours of building, but the most import detail to the build would be the MAP!
I have recently come across this program, WorldPainter, and I am not any good at it.
I was wondering if anyone would take on the challenge of creating my map. I have drawn out by hand what the map should look like, so please pm me and I will send you the image.
I originally posted stuffs in the main thread, but I figured this thread would be more appropriate.
I recorded myself creating a level because I had noticed that people were asking for features that aren't really needed because the functionality is already there, just not obvious. Beyond that, I also noticed that while the posted maps look great, the terrain is not always very realistic. So, for those who would like more beleivable terrain, made from scratch rather than generated, I am working on getting the raw video (just over 56 minutes of it) edited so that the boring bits are sped up and adding annotation and eventually dictation.
This is a picture of the world when I finished it, minus the Biome Overlay, which is simply not present for the screenshot.
So far, the unedited recording (which is actually multiple recordings smashed end to end and then rerecorded with another screen cap program because the free one put it in swf format like some sort of web development platform) is uploaded to Screencast.net and can be viewed at this link:

Keep in mind that future uploads will be better quality, I just wanted something put up for now. I work too much.
[ WOW, my bandwidth limit for the screencast thing just hit peak 2 hours ago, so I'm going to hurry and get this cut into episodes and put on youtube with further editing tonight ]
The biggest thing is:
Using the Default Terrain tool I figured out how to make sure underwater terrain (beaches), sand (ACTUAL beaches), and grass all form perfect coastlines regardless of how complex the terrain is. The same system also helped to create better desert borders, as well as making painting the underwater and above water terrain of swamps as "beaches" and grass respectively without having to spend as much time doing it much less accurately. (set the default terrain for the needed purpose, grab the non-feathered circle (bottom) and crank the strength all the way to the right and start "erasing" where you'd like paint the ground cover as your current default terrain settings.
Once I get the program overview done, I'll go and record a workflow for specific types of terrain and biomes n' such.
I first need to work out some kinks in the biomes, as well as thin out the woods that don't need to be as dense as Mirkwood or Fangorn. It takes three hours to compile into a minecraft save.
Here's a few samples of what I've got so far:
I'd love to see your work, but the images appear to be gone. What happened?
Over the past few weeks, I have become extremely familiar with this program. I realize at first, it may be complicated to create those extreme worlds that you have dreamed of, or those adventure map basics.
If you would like your map to be created, pm me a picture of what it would look like and I will create it!
I am taking as many requests as possible for a series I am going to start up on YouTube!
This is probably cliched but I created a map I call earth 2. It's a smaller than the actual earth so people can travel to different continents quicker and recreate the earth how they see it.
well i got it in my head a few days ago that i wanted to build things in America after a long search i could not find a map that fit the bill to my liking. so i went and grabed world painter and made this.
its not done yet but im in the process of adding the correct biomes to the proper areas and filling in lakes and rivers. its massive. and it took world painter 7 hours to render my test model. to give you an idea of the size i put down a 100x100 grid over the map.

This is the first tester map that im willing to release. After some trial and error and experimenting I pumped out this map to test elevations, see how my method of river making is working, and to scope the Stock Grand Canyon. The biomes are piece meal and not at all clean or exact. I put them in to make the map less boring. The map has some rough geography that may be angular. After my first map I discovered that smoothing the textures makes it 100 times harder find the original river valleys. I have completed several rivers which im in the process of testing.. If the results are good ill continue with more rivers. ( iv marked rivers to be with brown paths in grass land green paths in mountains)Some lakes are missing and oceans are shallow because im not focused on them right now. I moved sea levels from elevation 14 to 65
to help smooth out ultra steep elevations with a fresh render (mixed results)
Spawn in Central Valley California. (iv added my roman fort and Exploration Carrack with gear)
yes sir. when i figure out how to upload better resolution pics ill post more..lol
until then here is a link for a zoom on the west http://i21.photobuck...ealley/fsdf.png
yes it was a height map i found centered on North America. I doubled the default Resolution and smoothed out the rough edges. Plus there was some compenstaions i had to make because sea level was block zero and the rocky mountians had 256 so i selected an ocean depth before the import. i have to put in all lakes rivers and biomes by hand of course and that will take time. plus i have to add depth by hand to the great lakes and the oceans. thats the hardest part. what i realy want is a southwestern style desert instead of african desert lol red dirt and rock will look much better. any ideas for that?
My newest project, the next map for my server, titled: Atlas. It's 12800 x 12800 blocks currently, which is 100 x 100 tiles, but it will eventually be a 12800 block diameter circle. This makes it 16 times the size of my last map. The plan is to create a lavish buffet of terrain and environments in an expansive, solid world. So far, I've gotten a single, rough pass, plus some refining of differing levels throughout.
It'll be nice, the server premise is to advance through a faux society by earning respect as an architect, warrior, and merchant. Funding building projects with server currency earned by mining/gathering and selling and then purchasing/crafting the materials, and adding on to each settlement you progress through, you gain further permissions and access to more of the server map. The largest Island, Atlas Prime, will be the focus, with the path of progress snaking both in and out of it's bounds. The nearly finished island on the right is where the player is currently slated to begin, on the outside edge, a region I'm dubbing the Outlands, the lowest of the slums in the world. I'll have pre-positioned town centers around the world, all with a certain aesthetic the players will have to adopt at each point to be given advancement.
Private Islands will be scattered about as well. I'll probably have to make heavy use of WorldGuard and Essentials, and make a huge increase on my payments for an upgraded server...
In regard to my terrain tutorial, I hit a major snag trying to cut it down to size, and am having a few friends who read slower and didn't experience the video a hundred times over do the final editing, so that it flows better. Then comes recording audio, but I'll release the silent version first.
Also, I'm taking commissions. If you need a world designed, shoot me an email at [email protected]. Make sure to include explicit instructions if need be, as well as size requirements, etc.
I won't be taking requests in the scope of my projects, any bigger than 20 x 20 tiles (2560 x 2560 blocks) and I'll definitely say no.
I've made a two islands while testing out the program. I may use the second one in an adventure map, or I may try to make an even larger map. However, I'm afraid my laptop can't handle making a larger map than what I have.
Tytus_of_Asfalt, kudos on the map, it turned out well. Have you considered cleaning up the ground cover materials? It'd just be to minimize noise, which isn't very easy on the eyes, and would really help the final product appear more planned than haphazard.
Kaioti, you're going to want more of a sea-buffer, otherwise, if you travel by sea, new chunks may be generated.
New images from Atlas. I'm open to comments, n'stuff.
A few more islands with refined terrain, definitely not finished anywhere yet. Haven't even touched Biomes, but I do know that there will be a large desert on the main island, and that the north most island will be completely snow covered. I actually had a few rivers put in, but they seem to have disappeared, along with all of the mountain work on the big one...hooray for not saving!
I do not know why this one is small.
The caldera is going to be fun on this one. It's a bit bigger than the spawn-bowl from the BETA 1.7 and older "gargamel" seed.
First one will be a moon themed creative map. Here what how it turned out.
http://zoom.it/ba1W
Oh future feature would be able to add jungles. Would love to make a entire jungle map.
It's not the first and it's not the last, but it gave me a good reason to test my recording software!
