Also, chests now look weird because the graphics have been removed from the main texture file. One face is the new emerald block texture, the rest are blank purple. Since chests now use a custom skin, not sure how this can be handled in xray.
Bah, I've really got to finish up the work I had done for the next release and get back on this.
X-Ray needs to have access to the actual world directory in order to load a multiplayer world. Once you have a copy of the world directory on your local hard drive (or on a network share you have access to), just start up X-Ray, choose "Other..." from the world list, and browse to where the world directory is. If you hear people talking about using X-Ray on an SMP world, it's pretty likely that they're either talking about the unrelated XRay mod or the also-unrelated X-Ray Texture Pack.
This works great - but for me it is unusable, because the program terminates unexpectedly after 5 to 10 minutes of use. I'm using Windows XP. 2.5GB ram, Intel Pentium 4 Dual core CPU. Latest Java.
Sorry to hear that, btw - I've been a bit away from X-Ray for a bit and don't really have great resources to test stuff on Windows, though 99% of X-Ray users are on Windows, so it does work for most people. I'm guessing maybe a graphics driver issue? I assume you've already long gone, but if you ever do check back, maybe doublecheck that you've got the latest drivers, etc...
When can we expect Minecraft X-Ray to be updated for Minecraft 1.3.1?
Yeah, no doubt, right? Hopefully soon. I accidentally let myself get stuck on debugging a very unfun performance hit with some recent code (still not pushed out to github; perhaps I should do that and see if any enterprising soul wants to take it on themselves) right around the same time that I started on one of my cycles of wanting to actually play games instead of just writing applications for them. So that stalled out, then the Humble Indie Bundle V got released, then I started playing Master of Orion... For shame! Anyway, once I do get the performance thing squared away I should be able to get all the updated blockdefs, etc, out there. I shall return to you, Minecraft! I am anxious to check out 1.3.x, so hopefully that'll be a good impetus.
You haven't even checked out 1.3.1 yet?! It's awesome! What are you waiting for?! Anyway, I would've added the blockdefs myself, but I can't find the needed data to do so. I can look of the values on the Minecraft wiki, but that's it. No tex, no mapdata, no nothing else. Wait, what is that stuff for anyway, and where can I find it. I could help you with simple things like updating the .yaml file if only I knew where to find detailed information on new blocks. Also, is there any way to make Minecraft X-Ray be able to find items, such as saplings and apples on top of trees and all the stuff we drop when we die?
I've had a few crashes too. For one, the .cmd file should include the -Xincgc flag to enable incremental garbage collection. I learned this from here: https://sites.google.com/site/minecraftlandgenerator/home/advanced
That is one of several documentation pages on another program I use called Minecraft Land Generator. I use it to pregenerate terrain so that when I play the game, my computer can focus on more important things. Also, when used in conjunction with Minecraft X-Ray and a mapping program such as Minecraft Overviewer, villages, strongholds, and now pyramids and jungle temples can be found quite easily.
Anyway, when I ran the .cmd instead, I did run it with the -Xincgc flag, but it still ran out of memory and crashed. I could double the maximum memory to allow Minecraft X-Ray to use by changing the 1024 in -Xmx1024m to 2048, but I don't know if I want to give it that much memory on a 32-bit system. Maybe when I get a 64-bit system for college in less than a month, I will play around with stuff like this a little more, but for now I don't even think it's worth it. Whatever. I hope this information helps anyone with crashes in fixing them. Minecraft X-Ray is a great program, but no program is perfect. That's why they invented open source.
Hey skshaffer. I had some trouble adding emerald ore as well, but eventually I got it to work. I highly recommend Notepad++ for this kind of editing. It will help you a lot. Anyway, I can find emerald ore, emerald blocks, and cocoa bean plants as easy as pie now, and I have made the modified .yaml file available right here: http://www.mediafire.com/?qdty1urjwz1et3d
Shoutout to Dweller_Benthos for the data I needed.
Hope that helps!

Before today i had never seen this tool, and i must say it is awesome! This will make slime finding so much easier. Sure, there are ways to make it even more easy with coordinates and ingame mods, but i prefer a visual approach, and this works a lot like my beloved MCedit. And i want to keep my game clean of mods for a change. So this is a great find, keep up the good work.
P.S I used this in 1.3.1, works fine, no emerald, but meh. I much prefer diamond, i can make the rest myself.
is there any word on updates, and bug-fixing, etc?
Nothing since my last message of "I hope to get a new version out soonish." A busy week at work followed by a relaxing weekend of not really touching computers at all. In happier news, Curiosity is on Mars, so that's pretty damn awesome.
Wow! Checked the download count on that file I uploaded. 53! I didn't think it would be quite that popular, especially since only two people have said that they have grabbed it so far and one person has even said they don't care. Hope it's working great for all of you. Now if someone would just direct me to a place where I can get the required data on new blocks to add them on my own as they come out...

The "Data Values" page on minecraftwiki really is the best place to go for that, honestly. Folks who do map introspection like me tend to update that whenever we find out anything new. As for what coordinates belong to which blocks, that's just from introspection of Minecraft's terrain.png file, which can be found inside minecraft.jar.

Okay. I understand how tex works now. But how do I find mapcolor?

Oh, I always just load up the texture file in an image editor and select a pixel which seems to be a representative color, and take the RGB values from the editor. The mapcolor isn't really a terribly vital one, honestly, you could just put whatever you want in there. The majority of the minimap is going to be either pretty-obvious-looking player-created structures, or terrain, and will probably look fine regardless of what you put in for the new blocks.

From The FAQ:
No hurry. But, oh yeah, cocoa seed pods on trees...... (future-proofing, don't you know, lol)
OK, this looks weird, but here you go, until the modeling gets fixed:
And some other items:
Looks weird, as it isn't lit the same as other blocks (fullbright), but I guess all stairs do that?
Yeah, like you're ever going to see a lot of these unless you're on creative :-)
That replaces the current entry.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
Awesome, thanks for the items - I am feeling increasingly guilty about the length of time from the last update.

Awesome, thanks! I'll get that linked from the X-Ray site in a bit.

I saw the post about the updated yml file so I grabbed it...
*If you want me to see your post please quote me, thx* I decided to add this in too because (overloaded Mail box lol)
Thanks for the kind words! It certainly meets my personal criteria for use as well.
