"You do fun things when you are bored to make you un-bored." quoted Imnumberfour.
A lack of backwards compatibility with the allitems.png would not be surprising, as they've already done that with the terrain.png, by placing the block of emerald where the chest used to be.
Mojang left the old chest texture in terrain.png for a long time before overwriting it. Plus, since that texture was in a file shared with other textures, it was "lost" space if they did not eventually re-use it. On the other hand, the allitems.png change breaks compatibility between back-to-back versions for no good reason. I see no benefit for Mojang to change the existing file instead of using a new one. It will be sad if they release 1.3 with something that so pointlessly causes difficulty for the MC community.
As usual, it looks like it'll be up to the MCPatcher to fix this. Most texture packs make use of the features in the MCpatcher, so people who don't use it are missing out anyway.
MCPatcher adds a lot of good features, but it should not be required for basic compatibility. Also, many people favor Optifine, and I'm not sure whether it has the same feature.
I plan to contact Mojang with a request to fix this before 1.3. It should be a simple change to make. I encourage anyone else concerned about it to do the same.

I know, I was just using it as an example of lost backwards compatibility ^^

It saves them from having to change the code slightly to change the required file path for the allitems.png? I dunno. With the formatting change, I think the code would've been changed enough that changing the file path would've been no biggy. Besides, the latest .jars still contain terrain/moon.png even though that was replaced by terrain/moon_phases.png

If it's difficulty, it's difficulty easily avoided. When you update your texture pack to 1.3, just provide the old gui/allitems.png either as an image next to the download, or a download labeled "1.2.5 and before" or w/e.

While it is easy to get around, from the little I know, it should be a simple change to make.
I will talk to the other Union Admins and see if we want to back this as a Union.

I'd like to avoid multiple downloads, so if needed I'll probably just include something like allitems-old.png in the zip file with instructions for how to use it, but that would be an unfortunate hurdle for anyone using the pack with 1.2.5. If this were a necessary evil, then it would not be a big deal to live with it. What bothers me is just that it's so utterly pointless. I haven't dug much into Minecraft coding, but I'm a software engineer by profession, and I don't see any real benefit to use the same file.

Thanks. I'm looking at ways to contact Mojang. They have a youtube channel but might not watch messages there closely. [email protected] might be a better option. I don't have a twitter account but will get one if that helps. Is there a specific means you suggest to contact them?

They seem to be most active on twitter, so that would be the best place to contact them.

It's just idiots there who think "Hey! This looks funny, i better congratulate him on making me laugh, this isnt a site to give constructive criticism!". That's why i dont go on PMC anymore, first of all i just like the layout here better, and i also think that this place just seems to be managed better, but i know something has given me a better time here than over there.
TEXTURE RELATED (MOSTLY): With livestreams, is a microphone available to be used? If it is, can the joined people use them as well? It just seemed like it annoyed IIpod because of the constant tabbing to the chat window, and since i might be doing a livestream soon it would help if at least some people could give quick advice through my speakers. If i do do the livestream, then i' really appreciate if some of the really good texturers could come on and give me some advice from the pro's in the way of filters, render modes and some nice sure-fire effects.
PS: the livestream will be in photoshop CS5, as that is what i use, so it may be better if people that use that join, but obviously you are all welcome

I don't know what I love more; the ooze seeping from their cavities, or the adorable little monocle...
I really like the pants texture too. It's almost Simon Bianchi-esque, except that it doesn't look like **** and isn't plastered on every-other Wolverine cover.
Really great job on those villagers, and the pack in general. It's actually the only pack I bother to keep up with, these days; so I'm happy that I could in some small way inspire a bit more of it.

Thanks my good sir, I appreciate all of that :3 When I look at the pants textures, I'm actually really surprised they turned out that well - I made it using a mouse.
Nice skin!
Although, it's hard to see the shorts. Might I ask, where did you find out how to skin?Edit: Just missed my chance to claim a page. Dang.
Edit edit: Scratch that about shorts. Just realized they were pants.
Oops, did I say 'how'd you find out how to skin?'? I meant how'd you find out how to shade.

thanks! What is the average wait time to find out if I did? And how will I know?

Its tiled by 4x4
the vertical seam is visible. (as in, there's a horizontal line through the middle)
We are looking it over, don't worry.
Also, seeing VonDoomCraft has once more inspired me a bit to texture. Thanks Emperor Doom!
EDIT: Also, this is what confuses/annoys me about PMC. This has 27 diamonds; mine has 30. I don't get it.

Why does this have even one diamond?

That ice looks wonderful!
Thank you.
