This thread tracks all of the files that have changed that are related to resource packs. I try to keep this thread up to date with the latest snapshots on the day they release. I also will do a larger update when major versions release showing the changes between them. Check the links below to find the updates you are interested in.
Below is a list of new textures and what snapshot they were introduced in.
13W01A and 13W02A are not included as the first was still using the old format and the second is where the new format was introduced.

I must say, I'm liking this 1.5 format quite a bit as it makes it a lot easier to see what's new.
I know. I'm quite enjoying working my textures into this new format. It occurred to me recently that the new format should make the customizer more efficient.
I need to try out that new block, though.

One of the thoughts I've had while updating is that you could even pack all the alt textures into one .png and just use the .txt to indicate which ones are used in the game. (Heck you could even include alt animations) Dunno what that would do to the memory footprint though.

This is a good idea. If not for core, for a mod.
I think if done correctly it wouldn't have much of an impact at all, simply loading the same thing (a texture tile) from a different location. I can see this being a really nice feature in a future MCPatcher/Optifine build.
Quick, somebody suggest it to Kahr!
Oh, and thanks for pointing out what's new in the Snapshots. It helps me out a lot since I can't find an easy way to compare the new and old versions with the new format. Any tips?

Well I use Linux so I just use the diff command on unzipped copies of the jar files after deleting the non texture related files. Gives me a nice list of the files that are unique to each version.

MCPatcher/Optifine will be mostly redundant in 1.5
Yes and no. They won't be mandatory for HD packs anymore, but they'll offer a lot of other texture features that won't make it into vanilla Minecraft for some time. Optifine in particular will be useful for performance boost, even when it's no longer useful as a texture pack tool.

You Linux people and your superior operating system capabilities. Here I'm stuck using Windows because everything I use runs on it. *sigh*
Well, keep posting these updates then. We poor Windows-using folks appreciate it!
The ID's are still the same, and in away I don't see CTM needing to change that much. It could even still be done the same way it is now.
I am loving this format. So easy to find the new blocks, plus just think, people new to making textures now know what each block is to sense there all named! No more people posting 'where is ___ block?" "What does this texture go to?"
And here so many texture artists where wining about how much of a hastle this new format will make making new packs become. Pfff. I have no issues. If anything I want to make more XD

No, people who jump right in without being familiar with Minecraft will still ask these questions. Not everyone knows what a dispenser is, because not everyone uses dispensers.

Took me three days to convert everything I had to the new format, and that was with coming up with and creating new animations for the clock and compass. It's a bit of a hassle right up front, but I think once everyone gets "over the hump" with the new format they'll enjoy it.
It's not all that much easier for me to find new stuff, though. This is one regard in which I will miss the old format.
In regards to CTM stuff, it looks like Kahr has added a converter to MCpatcher to convert all of the .properties files and the like. MCpatcher isn't going to go anywhere unless minecraft itself starts supporting things like connected textures, random textures, and animations on things other than items and blocks. (I could maybe see them adding animations for the other textures but I don't see Mojang doing their own connected textures.)
I've decided to just track each new update's changes in this thread and have edited the original post to reflect that.

There were no new textures in the latest snapshot(13w05a).
Aw.
I was hoping to have a reason to update so I could bump my pack's thread since interest has evaporated.
Oh well, maybe next week.
Thanks Fool. (I just realized that that sounded like I was insulting you. I am not. That's just the most easy-to-use-as-a-name part of your screen name.)
Any ideas whether or not the new format will support non-standard resolutions? I don't mean 64x or the like, i mean 10x10 and other weird sizes. Because the current one messes them up even with Optifine or the patcher
Here are the new files from the latest snapshot.
Sorry for not getting this up sooner but I've been rather busy lately.
