Greetings, all. I am GenghisKhan44, and I have been playing Minecraft some quite some time. Being a Roman Catholic, I love building churches (and praying in them). I also know about and enjoy knowing about church architecture, and I thought I would make a pack of some sort to make buildings look a little more... churchlike.
UPDATES to 1.2:
Updated for 1.8.
Added a modified LANG file. How a cup of wine will be called a cup of wine, and a bottle of holy water a bottle of holy water!
Changed wooden door textures to be... nicer.
I think that's it.
Oh, and tabernacle skins are broken ATM...
Maybe a future update.
UPDATES TO 1.1:
* Reskinned iron doors to look like elaborate golden gates, perfect for "Beautiful Gates" and "Deacon's Doors" in Eastern churches.
In Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, the altar and tabernacle are separated from lay people by a wooden wall called an "iconostasis". On the iconostasis are pictures of the saints, angels, and Jesus called icons. So it' essentially an "icon wall". The iconostasis is representative of Heaven, where these people dwell and look out for us.
To get through the iconostasis are three gates: two "deacon's doors" on the outer edges of the iconostasis, and one large set of "Beautiful Gates" which the priest can access to get to the altar. Most people don't pass the Deacon's Doors and the Beautiful Gates because the sanctuary is where Christ dwells, and they wish to respect Christ's home. Only the priests and deacons regularly pass through the doors and gates, for the aformentioned reasons.
In Eastern Christianity, all churches are modelled very much like the Temple of Jerusalem was, thus the special reverence for the sanctuary - or "Holy of Holies".
* Modified glowstone. It is still as bright as before, but it has a new design with a Russian Orthodox cross on it.
* Modified cactus. It now has more prickles on it.
*Modified pumpkins. Pumpkins mow only have faces when a torch is placed into them. Without torches, they are ordinary, faceless pumpkins. (You can still use them as masques, though, and you can still see through them.)
* FOR SYRUP'S FANCY PACK MOD: Skins for any three of Syrup's "curiosities". They are:
** a golden dish called a paten with hosts sitting in it
** an empty chalice
** a monstrance holding a consecrated host for public demonstration and veneration.
All of these can be placed onto any surface.
* Reskinned wooden doors and trapdoors made to look like three planks of wood (rather than the front door of a suburban house in America or Europe, or a windowpane).
* A wooden cross to replace the wooden sword. Can be used in processions or to bash infidels in the head.
* Reskinned large chests that now are stone and have gilded icons of the Nativity and the Tomb after the Resurrection on them. They still hold twice as much as small chests.
-----------------------------
DESCRIPTION OF 1.0 (still valid except for the above changes).
This is a church I made specially to showcase this pack. From the back, we are looking at:
* Front and foremost, a small chest reskinned as a tabernacle (where the Eucharist is kept). Despite having the doors on the front of it (almost no tabernacles open from the top), you still can't block the top of it and open it.
* The tabernacle has a candle above it to indicate that the Body and Blood are there. (Candles are reskinned torches.)
* Behind the tabernacle is the altar, with two candles on it (one on each end). The altar is a reskin of the stone slab. (I also used stone slabs to construct the red carpet leading up to the altar rather than wool.)
* Two glowstone blocks made in a mysterious pattern that looks like a glowing Orthodox cross. (If we get square lanterns, I guess I could replace whatever skin they get with this, but this replaces glowstone right now.)
* A line of Christian icons and paintings. (Two of the four evangelists, Luke and Matthew [I think] are at the front. The Madonna [Mary and the Child Jesus] are at the left after that. And on the right, a picture of a cross made in Minecraft at the top, and a picture of the Last Supper at the Bottom.)
* Six pews made out of stairs and signs. Nothing special.
I am now at the front of the church, peeking in the tabernacle:
* Bread has been turned into a pure, white wafer (or a round, white loaf, whatever you imagine).
* Both gold and red apples have become chalices of wine. Red apples have become wooden cups with wine in them. Golden apples are golden cups (possibly Holy Grails).
Now we are at the back of the church, looking at a wall of votive candles, and:
* Icons of Jesus, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and Saint Irenaus at the left, and stained glass screenshots of Moses and Elijah on the right.
* A beaker of holy water smashing on the doors, and a beaker in my hand, and fifteen in my inventory. (Holy water replaces snowballs - yes, I hacked my inventory. So what?)
Lastly, a technical picture.
NOTE: Large chests are now skinned, too.
The stone slab reskin with red cloth over it, compared to red wool.
And a few pictures of candles in various positions.
(not pictured) I also took the cactus and gave it a few more rows of spines. Not worth picturing.
Things I might do later:
* Add a Bible somehow
* An iconostasis (a wall used in Eastern churches to separate the "Holy of Holies" from the main church
*Suggestions from non-Catholics? I may make different editions of this (Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran, etc)
As a Catholic, I love to make churches because it reminds me of the beauty of churches however small, for one thing, and for another the beauty of the God I worship. And while the churches I have been making aren't too shabby, I wanted to make them a bit more realistic - accurate. I also wanted to surround myself with the faith and reality I know and love - the Catholic faith and reality.
For us Catholics, the tabernacle is one of the most important features in a church. That is where Christ dwells day in and day out in a Catholic Church. How does He dwell in such a small box, one might wonder?
That is where the Bread and Wine come in.
At the Holy Mass (or the Divine Liturgy as some call it), the bread and wine are taken by the priest, who has the special ability to, as Christ did, turn bread and wine into the actual Body and Blood of Christ (with the appearance of bread and wine). This is a teaching of the Catholic, Orthodox and some Anglican churches. And Christ truly is with us in those forms.
When we eat the Body and Blood at Mass, we become a part of Christ (that is, we don't absorb Him; He absorbs us). We also become houses for Jesus to dwell in, or tabernacles. So truly the sharing of the Body and Blood is a holy and wholly engaging act.
If you are not a Catholic, you are under no obligation to treat anything in this texture pack with the reverence I would. If you just like building churches because you like pretty architecture, that's fine. The tabernacles also make fine ornate chests. If you do not like the glowstone with the Cross on it, you can remove it if you can edit the pack. I only beg you to treat it with a modest amount of reverence (I find it rude to make curse words and penises with blocks). I can't do anything if you do such things, but please, don't.
No priest jokes, please. Anti-Catholicism, while not appreciated, is acceptable (albeit often unproductive).
As noted above, if you have any questions about the Catholic Church or Christianity, feel free to PM me. I don't know everything, but I will offer help where I can.

@ Conker: Welcome and thanks for posting!
A cross on a book is OK. But I meant a Bible I can place on a table or altar. Hm.
A Creeper Jesus? Heh. ^.^ *shrugs*
Too bad I don't have super-modelling skills. I would love to make this a mod and make other stuff (like a crucifix, or statues).
EDIT: Oh, yeah, did I mention the seed for the map that I built this church on is (without quotes) "John 3:16"?
It's a terrible place to spawn. *lol*

Yeah creeper Jesus, that would be awesome XD as a good joke :tongue.gif:
Well you asked for a bible, putting a gold texture on a book would work...it you want one ion an alter then try changing the dispenser block so the top has a bible on it and the rest is an alter that makes the wood texture so it can be higher if needed?
This is really cool, it definitely feels like a church (I wouldn't really know, though...). One suggestion I have is to re-do wood so that it looks more like pews when used as stairs.
I made the wooden sword into a cross, but I have no pictures, yet.

As an atheist, I want to show my support for this pack. It's always great to see people with vision and conviction add their own view of the versatile Minecraft engine, and this is surely as valid as any other. Plus it seems you're off to a good start aesthetically, so keep up the good work. I imagine there won't be too much re-skinning of the nether involved, but making the mobs look a little more demonic might be a good idea. (well, pigmen maybe. Ghasts are already pretty horrific).
very nice! i'm not a roman catholic.. but i'm a presbyterian christian. is that okay? lol
you can reskin chocolaty's mod (furniture) and change some things to like.. a pew or a cross that emits light? anyways, nice job! this is the first time i have seen something like this.

Certainly; it's OK to be a Presbyterian. :smile.gif:
A cross that emits light... That's kinda what I tried to do with the glowstone "crosses"...
A pew and a few other things might be good for a mod of Syrup's pack.
But who is this chocolaty person? If he's making furniture I want to know. :smile.gif:

Atheism is the disbelief in any organized religion or gods. It has nothing to do with hate. Sure when two people have clashing ideas, it tends to lead to an argument, but that's not necessarily hatred.

Personally, I would use a crafting table or furnace (maybe both?) to make an altar, rather than stone slabs. That way, the slabs can be textured for other uses. For example, the tile or marble floor used in some cathedrals (possibly cobble for tile, smooth for marble, and sandstone for a different kind of tile, leaving wood as wood).
UPDATED for Minecraft 1.7
textures updated for 1.7x (will need to update for 1.8 :sleep.gif:; how do you guys do that?)
NEW:
* A holdable cross you can bash monsters with (replaces wooden sword)
* New doors: a wooden, plank-like door, a golden door (still requires iron to build), and a more planky trapdoor
For Syrup's Fancy Pack: three replacable curios:
* a golden dish with hosts sitting in it
* an empty chalice modelled after the golden chalice which replaces the golden apple
* a monstrance holding a consecrated host for public demonstration and veneration.
*Recolours of the front of the big chest; now it is also a tabernacle, with pictures representing the Nativity and the Resurrection on them
Updates and screens included soon!
