Is it possible to make 'HD' skins the same way you make HD textures? [Multiplying the size of the image by 2 to get a larger image, therefore higher definition.]
I'd LOVE to be able to make a 32*32 samurai skin. I'd have so much more freedom. Would the same apply to things like items? [Tools, like swords, etc.]
I'd be able to make a katana. I'm drooling already.
*Edit* : I'd also be willing to take requests, if I ever get better at this skinning business.
I'm curious about this as well, but in a different sense. From what I under stand you CAN'T increase the size of the char skin. But what I want to know is how you add Standard Def images on a skin that small. (Btw I'm using photoshop)
I think to get "HD" skins, you have to edit the .jar's char.png, rather than try uploading a skin normally. You then have to use the base skin, and everyone that doesn't have a skin will appear to use your HD skin.
Well, if it's anything like modding terrain, what I do is open the .jar file, copy the image file I need to a folder, edit it [in terrain cases, make them HD by doubling the size to 512px] and move it back into the .jar file.
Characters probably work the same way, I've yet to try. Hopefully it'll work.
if it DOES work, then the skin would only apply to you when you are offline, and maybe as other players online without a skin since it would replace the default skin. When you're online (connected to the net at all) it grabs your skin from the server instead. And if you have the default there, well, other folks will just see you as the default.
I'm sorry, I should have specified in more detail... It does work, technically, if you put it in the .jar file like biodude said. Unfortunately I guess it doesn't work if you try to upload it using Notch's tool. What that means, though, is we just have to convince Notch to change the size restrictions in the skin uploading tool.

1st skins - my guy & me, drawn from Misa's Europid skins shortened to 110 pix to fit here.
Hey I need some help i made my own skin from the misa texture of Boba Fett (HD) but I had set a normal size on minecraft.net and because the site only allows standard size skins i can't upload my HD one and i can't view my skin using a normal texture pack because the site one shows up instead. i would like to just disable the site skin but don't know how. If someone can fix this for me id be grateful and if they want i'll post the skin for thx.
Ok i made my HD skin but everytime i try to replace the char.png, it just continues to display the image i uploaded to the minecraft site. How do i override that?

I don't know what you did, but I just made a skin with double size, and I got an error when I tried uploading it.
So HD-skins is NOT supported at all.
Yeah, that was kind of my big moment here. Sorry for boasting.
I could be wrong.

Hope that clears up some of the confusion.

Minecraft Is All That I Need
Can you tell me where to find the file you used, i downloaded the pack but cant find the char file
Just download Misa's HD texture pack. There's a char.png in the "mobs" folder. I got mine from her alternative skins.
