Why is everyone calling the new portal material 'endergoo?' If it's used to build a portal with, it's probably not 'goo,' but some kind of more solid material...
Well, if you look at minecraft wiki's homepage, it will say that when the full game comes out notch said that there will be 3 modes: survival, creative, and ADVENTURE. so adventure might be the one u can win in :smile.gif:
What does everyone think about the progression in minecraft now? and do you think notch will ever put in an ending? I personally hope he doesn't and we get our sky dimension, but from my experience today, the prospect of an ending certainly seems plausible.
There is no "ending" to the game, it's a sandbox. The goal is what you make it. Just because stuff is in the game doesn't mean when you diddle it all the "game is over." There is no point/goal to the game unless you assign one.
Minecraft is just the platform your imagination uses to create a game.

Notch (or was it Jeb?) did mention he was gonna a way to 'win' Minecraft, but thats probably not gonna be a big text telling you that you won.
It would be more like a hard-to-get achievement, after which you get it, you continue playing.
I do like the direction minecraft is going, before, the only real 'end goal' was to get diamonds, to give that a bit more 'subtance' you could say you basicly won Minecraft after you got diamond armor + tools. (I'm talking back in the alpha days, btw)
Then came the Nether, but that kinda only changed the end goal to 'diamond armor + tools and a base in the nether'
Sure, this wasn't bad. Minecraft was fun to play and it did not matter that the only progression was with materials. The ppl who did mind the lack of progression were told things like 'Progression is for ppl without creativity, this is a sandbox game'
I can also understand the ppl who are now complaining that Minecraft becomes too RPG or whatever, thanks to the added progression.
I understand it, but I don't agree with it. You can still play Minecraft the way it was back in Alpha (well, mostly) but if you want more then just building sandbox game. You can.
Yeah, Minecraft is becoming better. Because we can play it any which way we want and I don't see that changing.
This is why mods like Equivalent Exchange and Buildcraft are awesome. They give you more to reach for later on. You still need the diamonds/etc. but for other reasons (dark matter/etc. for cool items). My only problem with the awesome-but-expensive items, the offensive kind, that you get from Equivalent Exchange is that I can't help but feel that the abilities, the ones pertaining to fire shooting or lightning, are wasted on defenseless creepers and the like... Guess I should snag another mod to fix that (the Aether perhaps?).

you understand that that wiki page is very old right? Notch also said that minecraft will stop getting new features added after oct 18th. it's currently oct 7th. So unless he can make a whole new game mode in 11 days, I doubt we'll ever see the fabled adventure mode.
He noted in a tweet some odd weeks back that the adventure update is supposed to give players of survival a sense of purpose other than digging and hoarding.

The game is going full release in November. Unless the game is advertised as ever-changing, many who buy the full release would feel cheated if 6 months later the game was "something different" than what they bought. That could seriously hurt sales.
So, chances are that the game will still evolve but not with the recent "massive changes in the game's nature".
As to the adventure purpose, many are not interested in it. For example, those that enjoy the design and creation aspects of minecraft. For them the answer will likely be mods, so that they won't have to waste time in the adventure aspects.

"facepalm" he stops october 18th to bug fix before the full release. after full release him and the others will take a short break from minecraft than come back and make more updates
do you know ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT THE PORTAL IS FOR?!
its supposed to eventually be a portal to skylands! do some research before makeing topics like this!
I love how you back up your point with loads of factual information. The purpose of that portal is currently entirely speculation.

Most likely, when Notch said that you would be able to "win" the game, he meant something similar to the Aether mod: in that mod, there are epic dungeons, bosses, etc. that you can beat, and that can be used as a goal for the Aether mod. However, you can also just ignore them if you want. Probably there will be some sort of boss you can battle, some sort of "winning" to the game, but not winning the game overall, like you do in many games, like Portal, Halo, etc. It would be more like the tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies, at most, where you have to win the game, but you can continue it and access new features. In other words, Notch probably won't make Minecraft "finish" when you "win"; he'll just add a well-defined goal that you can strive toward while playing.
if the air portal becomes a way to win, you wont win like that, you will teleport to a boss room somewhere, in which you will battle herobrine to the death (he is REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!)
but even after that there wont be big yellow letters, or any letters for that matter, you will probally go back to the overworld or to notch's dream land (yea its a dream land, or at least he said it would be a few months ago) where you will frolack with puff the magic dragon (if you get that reference you win at life)

More stuff in the game gives the players more targets to aim for. Just because a person hits a target, doesn't mean the game has "ended." Or even that it would need and "end" to be fun in the first place.

Just like the nether these other dimensions will be. It definetely wont be some ending. That would ruin minecraft, the point of minecraft is playablitiy. No ending.

Long answer: How can you "win" in Minecraft? I mean, do you seriously expect there to be a "win" scenario? Jumping through a portal and "YOU WIN!" just wtf man? You could have a sense of progression, sure, but that does not equal winning or even an ending (although it must level off at some point). Go and build stuff, explore more of the world, reach the Farlands in every direction or something.
Accomplishment =/= winning the game
In this interview notch states that he does plan on having a difficult goal to accomplish in the game, one that you don't have to do, but it you try, it will be damn hard to reach.
“I think Minecraft is lacking that, which is why I want to add some kind of way to win. But I don’t expect people to actually win the game when they play. It’s going to be some kind of guiding purpose.”
Now, let's think about this. It is currently very difficult to get to The Ender. First and foremost, you have to have a diamond pick axe to create a nether portal to get to the nether. Then, you have to scour the nether to find some Nether Ruins. Then, you have to hunt Blazes (which are currently the most difficult mob in the game) within those ruins to collect their blaze powder. Once you have a good supply you then have to hunt Ender men, which are not only rarer, but also stronger as of 1.9 to collect enough enderpearls to combine with the blaze powder to craft Eyes of Ender. Then, you have to find a stronghold. Within that stronghold you will find a room with an ender portal guarded by a silverfish spawner, which you will then have to destroy if you want to get close to the portal (silverfish are hard enough as it is, but a spawner will be a nightmare). Then you must use your eyes of ender to repair the broken pieces of the portal to activate it. Yay, you are now in the Ender.
Sounds pretty difficult, no? That is the reason I too believe that this may be the start of that 'goal' notch has mentioned more than once. I'm not saying you'll jump in the portal and credits will roll or anything, this may just be a part of the task.
