I don't care if the NPC villagers look like the player or not, I'd rather they didn't, I'd rather they didn't represent any part of the homo-genus. I'd rather have something else, anything else, pigmen, goblins, Mr. Saturns. Just not... this!
The only thing I hate about them is that they all has arms crossed.
Sure, it would be okay if only one or two of them had their arms crossed, like the village priest and librarian. Those guys would pretty much sit around all day. But the villagers that smith/farm/butcher/etc couldnt do what they do with their arms crossed. And its kinda weird that they are all guys... how would they populate?
...Or maybe the girls look exactly the same as guys. Wow.
For all we know, there could be other modles of npc's, and they only used one model for testing reasons.
Wow, you just gave me an idea.
What if there were multiple races of NPCs, and these would be a caveman-esque race, who had very primitive tools and lived in caves? Maybe they actually are a hunting-gathering civilization that would roam (this would work well with the permanent mobs).
Of course I don't expect any of this, but it would be awesome.
I don't think this interpretation that people are against "weirdness" is accurate. People love creepers, the Nether (pointlessness aside), endermen, the strange formations of Minecraft geology and all that. Minecraft is slightly weird in every department and people like that.
I think the bigger complaint is these guys just look like other things too much... call it a Muppet, a Squidward, a deformed human... all those things are too easy to see in the villager. If it's going to be weird it should at least have its own niche.
Every time I hear this used as an argument, it becomes immediately invalid in my eyes.
Minecraft is a sandbox game. If you choose to roleplay such that you're in a strange unknown world with bizarre wonders, so be it. But there is no "supposed to" in Minecraft.
I second this. minecraft is whatever anyone wants. technically though minecraft is supposed to be a game where you get to decide everything you do. The only limit seriously is your imagination.
BACK TO THE TOPIC:
another quick thought. I keep hearing about people wanting pigmen villages. I disagree strongly since pigmen probably wouldn't be able to talk/communicate with steve, and well they don't wear clothes or yeah know. anyway I think possibly a pigman(zombie or otherwise) village in the nether is a thought just make it a destroyed shamble of a village. also going back to my earlier arguement I feel that the current villagers could be an ok mob if used very moderetely. I could understand one of them being in a village as the town apothicist (runs an apothacary) that actually seems to go along with their appearence. also perhaps a bit more specificity in the villages. I couldn't even tell what any building was other then the forge and watch tower. The current NPCs dont help much either.
i really thought they would run shops like general stores, blacksmiths, and the like. But alas, they do absolutely nothing. they don't even react to you hurting them or buying their village.
Minecraft was supposed to be a game of survivor, where you are lost in the wilderness, and had to live off farming and hunting animals while exploring and trying to avoid darkness.
Minecraft is not only about being as this survivor. Its also about creating an actual mine searching for rare diamonds while avoiding creepy weird monsters from killing you or ruining your mine. Maybe the NPC villagers are a weird "squidward-like" race.
Meh, there will be different types, Look at the files Butcher and stuff are there for villagers!
this seems right - there is a villager file with differant looks - this one is just the clergyish skin - expect more and of course better ai improvements - this guy is just the first test
I don't care if they look like Max Headroom mixed with an elephant, please, just change their heads. Until that, every village I see will be emptied by my sword.
i really thought they would run shops like general stores, blacksmiths, and the like. But alas, they do absolutely nothing. they don't even react to you hurting them or buying their village.
all they do is creep on you when you sleep.
I found what I assume was some sort of church with a tower, so I put a bed up in the middle room of the tower. The priest followed me up and WOULD NOT LEAVE.
He was just staring at me as I slept D: terrifying.

Zombies look like Steve-esque people. Not like these villagers. Are the villagers zombie-proof? Are they migrants, moving to a post-zombie-apocalyptic wasteland for no obvious reason? Why are there no other Steve-likes?
Also, I hope that each different type of villager looks vastly different. That would be realistic, and then perhaps these villagers would seem less alien, and more like normal, human ugly dudes.
I agree with you. I figured out Minecraft is a game about a survivor of the Zombie Apocalypse that has to try to rebuild the world (hence Steve often being called "survivor"), and I expected NPC Villages to be other survivors of it, not *more* weirdos.
And now, the only difference between each one is the color of the outfit they wear >_<
Tried stealing from them, smashing there windows, lighting their houses on fire, lighting them on fire, burrowing under their town, removing the barriers holding back the lava in their forge building, pillaging/trampling their crops, etc.
They don't do anything, they can't even open their own doors. I find this mildly amusing. There's no real point to pillaging their town either because it has nothing of value, unless you are in a biome with low wood supplies.
There is no AI yet, they are currently stupider than chickens, if you hit them with a sword they won't run like animals do and they wander anywhere ... if you let them out of their house.
I'm not complaining though, their towns make for interesting scenery at least and it's more interesting than not having them.

I don't think that's their nose, I think that's a cloth cap hanging down over their noses.
they dont even attack enemies at night
+ They're ugly

I think they look way more intelligent than the player, that's the whole point!
Thanks for the key, Stephen!

If it is the cap then the contrast needs to be turned up because I thought they were just bald.
Like female dwarves in LOTR?
They have beards too? :tongue.gif:
I think they look like a society of peaceful monks. I was thinking of drawing a more realistic version of them sometime, it would be a neat concept.

The nose can be easily removed, check their .png file and delete the nose squares.
^ This.

Actually I think they look like this:
